tangible, just as it is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scriptures. Speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tongues, exorcism, prophecies, miracles <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>s are frequent expressions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> powerful presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, <strong>and</strong> are expla<strong>in</strong>ed as <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirit be<strong>in</strong>g effective for <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> community. At <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong><br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Spirit as if He is at one’s disposal, <strong>the</strong> concern to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong><br />

God’s Spirit visibly determ<strong>in</strong>es most church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istries (Anderson 1991:108).<br />

5.3.4 Jesus <strong>the</strong> great physician<br />

The relation between religion <strong>and</strong> health <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African context is not only represented by <strong>the</strong><br />

concept <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, but is also embodied <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as <strong>the</strong> healer or <strong>the</strong><br />

great Physician. To many African believers, <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer is powerful, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

feel comfortable with <strong>the</strong> idea that Jesus is <strong>the</strong>ir doctor through <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit. Various<br />

publications explore <strong>and</strong> shed light on <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> a <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Jesus <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African context (see<br />

Shorter 1985; Fabella & Oduyoye 1988; Kolié 1991; St<strong>in</strong>ton 2004, 2006; Br<strong>in</strong>kman 2007).<br />

The popularity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer seems to have two explanations. First <strong>of</strong> all,<br />

many believers share <strong>the</strong> experience that Jesus is directly <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir daily life. In a context<br />

where people constantly endure diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis (TB), <strong>and</strong> HIV/AIDS,<br />

Jesus’ <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> powers have a particular mean<strong>in</strong>g, so that ‘Jesus <strong>the</strong> healer’ represents <strong>the</strong><br />

conviction that Jesus <strong>in</strong>tervenes <strong>in</strong> human life <strong>in</strong> a <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> manner. The <strong>the</strong>ological mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

Twelftree’s study (1993) is appreciated aga<strong>in</strong>st this backdrop. Twelftree’s Jesus <strong>the</strong> Exorcist<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a scriptural foundation <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> exorcism. Despite <strong>the</strong> tendencies <strong>of</strong> twentieth<br />

century <strong>the</strong>ology, Twelftree states that <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> exorcism was a very central, yet ord<strong>in</strong>ary,<br />

element <strong>in</strong> Jesus’ activities. Downplay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> Jesus as an exorcist implies neglect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jesus <strong>the</strong> healer <strong>in</strong> a tw<strong>of</strong>old way: (1) <strong>the</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> direct <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

believer’s life, <strong>and</strong> (2) <strong>the</strong> aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> (expected) victory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supernatural battle aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> Satan. These two elements are highly particularly well appreciated <strong>in</strong> relation to<br />

health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> by African Christians.<br />

The second explanation for <strong>the</strong> popularity <strong>of</strong> Jesus as a healer is associated with <strong>the</strong> holistic<br />

underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> illness <strong>and</strong> health, <strong>of</strong> life <strong>and</strong> death. Because well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> are part<br />

<strong>and</strong> parcel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African worldview, Jesus’ striv<strong>in</strong>g towards well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> fits perfectly<br />

well with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> African underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> wholeness, which expla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> appreciation<br />

frictions <strong>and</strong> disbalance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> man. This means that prophecy, <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> declar<strong>in</strong>g words <strong>of</strong><br />

God through <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit, is <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, because it aims at <strong>spirit</strong>ual <strong>and</strong><br />

physical well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
