<strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual forces <strong>of</strong> evil <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavenly realms”. The battle between evil <strong>and</strong> heavenly <strong>spirit</strong>ual<br />

forces is not only recognized as an experienced reality with<strong>in</strong> AICs <strong>and</strong> PCCs, but also with<strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r traditions, like <strong>the</strong> Roman-Catholic Church, <strong>the</strong> Anglican Church, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>ran Church<br />

(Jenk<strong>in</strong>s 2006:105).<br />

The victory over evil <strong>spirit</strong>s is <strong>the</strong> premise <strong>of</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual <strong>in</strong>tervention by <strong>the</strong> faith community.<br />

Many churches <strong>in</strong> Africa underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> liberation as a<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ commission to his disciples to heal <strong>and</strong> to liberate. Asamoah-Gyadu<br />

(2004:394) def<strong>in</strong>es such <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> deliverance m<strong>in</strong>istries as “<strong>the</strong> deployment <strong>of</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e<br />

resources, that is, power <strong>and</strong> authority <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name or blood <strong>of</strong> Jesus – perceived <strong>in</strong><br />

pneumatological terms as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit – to provide release for demonpossessed,<br />

oppressed, broken, disturbed, <strong>and</strong> troubled persons <strong>and</strong> communities, <strong>in</strong> order that <strong>the</strong><br />

victim may be restored to ‘proper function<strong>in</strong>g order’”. In exorcism, <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

church-based <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry, it is all about <strong>the</strong> free<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a human be<strong>in</strong>g by end<strong>in</strong>g his or her<br />

oppression by an evil <strong>spirit</strong> or demon. By means <strong>of</strong> prayer <strong>and</strong> fast<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g faith<br />

community plays a crucial role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle aga<strong>in</strong>st demonic power.<br />

This demonic power has different faces <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare. The generic enemy <strong>of</strong><br />

God’s fullness <strong>of</strong> life is Satan, whose evil power is manifested <strong>in</strong> demons <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

control <strong>of</strong> human be<strong>in</strong>gs. Be<strong>in</strong>g captured by evil <strong>spirit</strong>s will manifest itself as demon oppression<br />

or demon possession. Demon oppression is when <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> evil presents suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

misfortune to a person, while demon possession is about <strong>the</strong> demon hijack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

human be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> such a way that he or she speaks <strong>and</strong> acts on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demon. The human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g, hav<strong>in</strong>g lost his or her free will, is taken hostage by <strong>the</strong> evil <strong>spirit</strong>, <strong>and</strong> aims at destruction.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r phenomenon closely related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>spirit</strong>ual warfare concept is <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> witches.<br />

Witchcraft is def<strong>in</strong>ed as “a manifestation <strong>of</strong> evil believed to come from a human source” (Kgatla<br />

2003:5). This means that evil is not only associated with demonic <strong>spirit</strong>ual forces, but also with<br />

malevolent human be<strong>in</strong>gs who deliberately seek <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> evil powers <strong>in</strong> order to destroy<br />

<strong>the</strong> abundant life <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> witchcraft discourse, a witch is described as someone who<br />

targets <strong>the</strong> life force <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> vitality <strong>of</strong> a human be<strong>in</strong>g, whe<strong>the</strong>r or not at someone else’s request.<br />

Ellis & Ter Haar (2004:95) contend that “witches are <strong>of</strong>ten suspected <strong>of</strong> steal<strong>in</strong>g or ‘eat<strong>in</strong>g’ <strong>the</strong><br />

life-force <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir own vitality”. The evil created by ano<strong>the</strong>r human be<strong>in</strong>g lurks<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d every corner, <strong>and</strong> hence why people try to protect <strong>the</strong>mselves from witchcraft <strong>in</strong> all its<br />

varieties. Witchcraft beliefs are widespread <strong>in</strong> Africa, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are multiple churches (<strong>of</strong> all<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>and</strong> traditions) address<strong>in</strong>g witchcraft <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istries.<br />
