that <strong>the</strong> human covenant partner needs to adhere to <strong>the</strong> covenant conditions <strong>and</strong> to respect God’s<br />

precepts. Compliance with <strong>the</strong> rules <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> covenant will generate bless<strong>in</strong>g, but disregard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

conditions will lead to curse. Exodus 15:25f <strong>and</strong> Exodus 23:23f are considered to be key texts <strong>in</strong><br />

biblical terms about health <strong>and</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. Then <strong>the</strong>re is also <strong>the</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> covenant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Prophets, <strong>in</strong> which bless<strong>in</strong>g is considered as <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> from disease <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> protection. Even <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Prophets we f<strong>in</strong>d a <strong>the</strong>ology <strong>of</strong> curse <strong>and</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> covenant, but,<br />

unlike <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Torah, bless<strong>in</strong>g features <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prophets when God <strong>of</strong>fers a new chance to <strong>the</strong><br />

covenant relation that has been damaged due to <strong>the</strong> disobedience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Israel. The<br />

bless<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>n, has <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> a promise <strong>of</strong> future recovery (that is <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, both literally <strong>and</strong><br />

figuratively) ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> safeguard aga<strong>in</strong>st misfortune.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> covenant is not <strong>the</strong> only category <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Old Testament deals with <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>.<br />

De Vries (2006:362f) po<strong>in</strong>ts out that on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> stories, which do not occur <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Old Testament, it can be said that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> is also about (1) <strong>the</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong><br />

Yahweh <strong>in</strong> relation to idols. The resurrection miracle <strong>in</strong> Sarafat (1 K<strong>in</strong>gs 17) as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>of</strong> Naaman (2 K<strong>in</strong>gs 5) testify to <strong>the</strong> idea that even those who do not belong to <strong>the</strong><br />

covenant <strong>of</strong> Israel may share <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> salvation <strong>of</strong> Yahweh, after Yahweh’s prophet is obeyed <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Yahweh is glorified. And (2) <strong>the</strong> sovereign act <strong>of</strong> God for <strong>the</strong> realization <strong>of</strong> his<br />

history <strong>of</strong> salvation is a source <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. The barrenness <strong>of</strong> Sara (Genesis 17:15-21; 18:10-14;<br />

21:1f), Rebekah (Genesis 25:21) <strong>and</strong> Rachel (Genesis 30:22f) lead to God’s deal<strong>in</strong>gs that ignore<br />

human limits because God’s salvation history must come to realization. F<strong>in</strong>ally, (3) <strong>the</strong><br />

faithfulness <strong>of</strong> Yahweh to k<strong>in</strong>g David also provides a framework <strong>in</strong> which <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> occurs. In 2<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gs 20:1-11, K<strong>in</strong>g Hezekiah is cured from a sk<strong>in</strong> disease because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship <strong>of</strong> God<br />

<strong>and</strong> Hezekiah’s fa<strong>the</strong>r David.<br />

Westermann (1972) po<strong>in</strong>ts out that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> salvation may be different <strong>in</strong> character <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old<br />

Testament, but that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> should not be subord<strong>in</strong>ated to salvation, as Christian <strong>the</strong>ology has<br />

always done. He too emphasizes that <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Testament is understood to mean<br />

bless<strong>in</strong>g. Heal<strong>in</strong>g occupies a central place <strong>in</strong> human existence, <strong>and</strong> is quite naturally considered<br />

<strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> God. In a cont<strong>in</strong>uous <strong>and</strong> silent way God blesses people with wholeness <strong>of</strong> life, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

that is God’s purpose <strong>and</strong> will for his creation. Westermann asserts that salvation is God’s o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

way <strong>of</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with his people. God’s sav<strong>in</strong>g action towards a particular people carries more <strong>of</strong> a<br />

communal notion, while <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual character, leav<strong>in</strong>g it to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ‘diseased’ <strong>in</strong>dividual to see God’s h<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (or even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong>).<br />

Westermann (1972:19) balances <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> salvation by say<strong>in</strong>g that “<strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>heal<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
