It’s an emollient.
Epaderm is a film barrier aiding moisture retention within the skin. Developed by
doctors at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne specifically for
eczema sufferers, it is an ideal emollient for a wide range of dry skin conditions.
Using the correct quantities
To ensure sufficient skin rehydration, the following amounts of an emollient are
recommended for whole body application, based on three to four applications a day:
For a child 250g per week 1
For an adult 500g per week 1

It’s a soap alternative.
In the care of dry skin conditions, it is vital to ensure that moisturisation is carried
out whenever possible. However, it is equally important that no soaps
or products containing detergents are used, as not only will these aggravate the
eczema, but they actually increase water loss from the skin. 2
Using Epaderm as a soap substitute ensures that dry skin can be properly washed
without losing additional moisture, or dealing with the problems that common
soap additives might produce.
Using Epaderm as a soap
Scoop a small amount from the tub, lather under warm water and then use
as a normal soap.
TOP TIP:Take a length of Tubifast and tie a knot in one end. Holding the knot,
scoop an amount of Epaderm into the middle of the Tubifast and tie another knot in
the other end.The emollient will then soak through the bandage and act as a soap.
Epaderm is suitable for all ages.

It’s a bath additive.
Soaking the skin in an emollient bath for optimum rehydration is another key step
of complete emollient therapy.
Using Epaderm in the bath
Take 4g (about the size of a £2 coin) from the tub, melt first in a tumbler of hot
water, ensuring it has cooled sufficiently before adding to the bath. Do not
apply hot water directly to the skin. When using as a bath additive, care should be
taken as it will make the surface of the bath slippery.
And because Epaderm contains no fragrance, colourings or additives, baths can be
taken as often as required.

Wet and Dry Wrapping.
The value of Epaderm in the wrap technique
Both wet and dry wrapping are used in the treatment of Atopic Eczema, which
involves the use of an emollient such as Epaderm and Tubifast Garments.
For wet wrapping, an emollient is applied to the affected skin, which is then covered
with a damp Tubifast Garment.Working together, the emollient and the damp layer of
bandage keep the skin hydrated and moist, and help reduce inflammation. The Tubifast
Garment also acts as a retainer, ensuring the emollient stays in contact with the skin.
A second dry Tubifast Garment is then applied which keeps the patient’s clothing dry
and prevents further scratching from aggravating the skin and causing potential injury.
For dry wrapping, a single layer of dry Tubifast Garment is applied over an emollient.
