(b) Since the Government cannot provide adequate finances to all the private secular Colleges,
the Department on November 24 th 2008 could organize a UGC orientation meeting of Principals
with UGC Deputy Secretary for Northeast to highlight the assistance which could be availed by
the Colleges from UGC. Out of 13 Govt. Colleges, only seven (7) and four (4) in Private
Colleges are covered under Sec.2(f) and 12 (B) which makes them eligible to receive UGC
grants. The other six (6) Govt. Colleges and thirty three ( 33 )Private Colleges are yet to receive
this status.
© Higher Education has seriously taken up the national policy for Assessing, Promoting and
Sustaining Quality Education. To monitor and encourage the delivery of quality Education, the
Department is closely working with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council
(NAAC) under UGC to encourage the Colleges in Nagaland to undertake self assessment and to
improve their performances.
The State Level Quality Assurance Coordination Committee (SLQACC) formed in 2005 and
the Quality Assurance Cell (QAC) formed in 2004 are actively involved to create awareness in
the Colleges for the necessity of NAAC Assessment for Quality Education. The College Quality
Assurance Committee (CQAC) has been formed to motivate and guide the affiliated Colleges to
undergo NAAC Assessment. Accordingly the CQAC could conduct awareness programmes in 9
Colleges , in 6 Districts.
During 2008, Kohima Science College, Jotsoma and Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung have
already taken steps to go for the process of accreditation . The Department is thus giving
emphasis on Quality Education.
4. Grants-in Aid : The Department implements a Grant-in aid scheme under which financial
assistance is extended to Govt. recognized Private Colleges, Theological Colleges and
Educational Institutions of higher learning, organizations and on rare occasions even individuals
who are involved in the promotion of education are also covered under this scheme. Activities of
student bodies in the form of conferences, seminars and workshops are also patronized through
this scheme. Rs.165 lakh have been allocated for the year 2008-09.
5.Growth of Private Secular Colleges : There are thirty seven (37) Secular Private Colleges in
Nagaland, affiliated to Nagaland University. These Colleges are given grants-in- aid annually
according to their enrolment, performance in the University exams and other yardsticks.. The
Colleges are listed below.
