Dear Members,
EDITORIAL
Amazingly another year has passed – what has it brought? Rosettes
and Certificates for the fortunate, disappointed hopes for some?
Yes, maybe - but most importantly a year spent in the company of
‘The Best Little Pal In The World’ couldn’t fail to have been a good
one! Whether ‘rescue’ dog, family pet, show dog or even just a
memory of a four-legged friend from ‘days gone by’ – we have all
shared in the fun, friendship ( and frustration !) involved in being
owned by a Cairn Terrier. We all have our tales to tell!
We hope this year’s Year Book will both inform and entertain you.
We are grateful to those who have contributed articles, advertisements
and photographs for it. It is good to look back on Rogues’
Gallery pages and see winners of the past years as well as the more
informal and often amusing entries for the Members’ Advertisements.
Keep your cameras ready to capture a ‘Cairn Moment’ from
2013 which could feature in next year’s Year Book!
Please keep us informed of address and e-mail changes throughout
the year. As we increasingly rely on the use of email to cut down
on postage, it is frustrating when emails are ‘bounced back’. When
literature is returned because the recipient is no longer living at
that address it can result in time spent researching a new address
and additional postage for a second attempt. Please check that your
details are correct in this Year Book. If they are not, please let us
know.
Best wishes for a happy and successful 2013.
Helen Miller Yvonne Catto
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Members
It is a great honour to take over the presidency of The Cairn
Terrier Club from Iain Shaw and I would like to thank him for
all the work he has done for the Club over the last five years
and welcome him back on to the committee.
The year starts with the sad news that Fiona Cameron lost her
brave fight against cancer. She was an invaluable member of
the committee, her knowledge and commitment to the Club and
the Cairn Terrier will be sadly missed.
It is a difficult time for the breed at the moment with falling
entries at Championship and Club shows. The lost of several
breeders/exhibitors from the show scene has been one reason
for this, combined with the increased costs involved in showing
and also the difficulty in attracting new enthusiasts into the
breed. I do not know the answers but the one thing we can all
try and do is to make sure any newcomer is made welcome to
our shows and events, and hopefully they will get bitten by the
show bug and become the breeder/exhibitors of the future!
I wish our members a very successful 2013 and look forward to
meeting you at our Club events; and some of our overseas
members at the Cairn Terrier Symposium in August.
OBITUARIES
It is with deep regret that we record the deaths of the following members.
The Club extends its sincere sympathy to their families and friends.
FIONA CAMERON (STRYVELING)
I first met Fiona Cameron in 1988. I was on the door at the CTC
Championship show when she arrived asking what to do. Years later
she told me she had watched the CC’s being handed out and vowed that
one day she would be there winning one. Well, she did it just last year
when her bitch Stryveling Sweet Caroline won the bitch ticket and
went on to win several more.
Fiona realised early on that the two pups she had weren’t world beaters
so she went to Sally Latto and bought Pinetop Rose of Stryveling, born
in 1989, with whom she won her first CC at Scottish Breeds in 1992
under Phyl Hayward. Fiona’s first champion was another of Sally’s –
Pinetop Havana of Stryveling who was made up in 1995.
She continued to show with moderate success but then came her first
home-bred champion, Stryveling Ivanhoe, made up in 2002 and Top
Cairn 2003. His breeding owed much to the Kinkims of Ron and
Brenda Birch but his maternal grand-dam was Pinetop Petronella at
Stryveling. Ivanoe’s son Stryveling Robb Ruadh ex S. The Lady
Rowena, a daughter of Havana, was made up in 2009 and Fiona’s last
champion, Stryveling Sweet Caroline gained her title in 2012. Her sire
was the international winner Ch. Birselaw Billy Fury and her dam was
Pinetop Game Set ‘N’ Match for Stryveling.
Both Sally Latto and Ron and Brenda Birch gave Fiona much help and
encouragement but her success was down to her own perseverance
and determination, even in the last year or two when her cancer
treatment was taking its toll. Many were the journeys we shared to
‘south’ shows, good times, good laughs, a glass or two in the evening.
Win or lose we remained friends.
7
As well as being a successful breeder and exhibitor, Fiona was heavily
involved in the secretarial work of various organisations in the breed.
She joined the Cairn Terrier Club committee in 1995, edited the CTC
Year Book for 14 years and as her swan song produced the wonderful
Centenary edition. Fiona was the CTC representative on the Cairn
Terrier Relief Fund for 7 years - from 1993 - 2000. Not an easy task as
those of us who have done it know.
She was the breed representative on the Scottish Breeds Committee,
Secretary/Treasurer of the Joint Show, Secretary to the UK CTC
Working Party, Secretary to the UK Cairn Symposium and to the
World Cairn Symposium to be held this year. She also kept the Breed
Judging Lists up to date and made sure show secretaries received a copy.
Fiona’s secretarial skills stood her in good stead in all this – she helped
her husband, Jim, run his PR business then taught at a further education
college in Alloa. I remember her turning up at SKC having taken her
dogs with her to work, slunk out during a break in her timetable,
changed in the car and drove to Ingliston, showed her dogs then hurried
back to take her next class. That’s what you call keen!
Fiona first awarded CC’s in 2006 at Bournemouth and was very
disappointed at having to withdraw, for health reasons, from a judging
appointment in Australia in 2011.
Fiona Cameron will be missed by so many people in the world of dogs,
not only for all the work she put in – which was prodigious – but for
her friendly, helpful manner and charming personality. Personally I
will miss a good friend with whom I had much in common – we used
to joke that our mothers would have got along very well as they had
similar attitudes. Fiona died just short of her 70 th birthday and she and
Jim would have celebrated their 40 th anniversary this year. It wasn’t to
be and no-one will miss her more than Jim.
Doreen Ann Shorter nee Nuttall
My first recollection of
Doreen was this “large”
lady perched on a chair by
a grooming table trimming
dogs, in particular their
tails, perfecting the shape
before they went into the
show ring. I can remember
at times there being a
queue of people waiting to
take advantage of her
skills. Sometimes she
didn’t even get to see the
judging herself, but knew
exactly what the topic of
conversation was around
the ring.
Doreen was the eldest child and the only girl with two brothers to show
her, or was it the other way round, how to get into trouble and they did!
Doreen was a big animal lover and told many tales of various animals
that had needed rescuing by her. In her early years she was very
involved with pony’s and attended gymkhana’s. Her son Wayne used
to compete and with Doreen’s help and advice was successful, she was
very proud of his achievements and wins.
n 1985 Doreen bought her first Cairn Terrier puppy from Sue Dolan,
Glenrood Super Scamp. When Scamp was 6 months old she took him
to ring craft in Oxford where she met Sonia White, and after that, the
three of them started to go to the shows together, the rest is history.
Doreen would often go home covered in hair from the many exhibits
that she had groomed that day. Over the years she acquired more
Cairns but always boys, she would study pedigrees and conformation,
her knowledge was never ending.
9
Doreen and Roy bought Tweedisle Tugger and with the help of Bob
and Yvonne Croyman made him up, this was her first champion. It
didn’t make any difference to Doreen whether she won or not, as far as
she was concerned, she was taking the best one home.
In 2000 Doreen and Roy bought Spawyche Elizabethan Jet from
Wendy Moseley, but with Doreen becoming less mobile; I stepped in
to help and started to handle him for them. In 2005 Doreen and Roy
bought Penticharm Prince Charming (Rupert) from Liz and it was a
very memorable day in March 2007 when he won best of breed at
Crufts, with me at the end of the lead and Doreen and Liz watching. I
was so proud and Doreen, well she was just speechless. It was too far
for Doreen to walk to the main ring but a crowd of us watched on the
big screen as he was pulled out in the Terrier Group. Doreen’s face just
lit up and she just said “that’s my boy”!
With Doreen’s decreasing mobility, she struggled to get to the shows
at times, but with the help of the “Oxford Team “ she was able to
represent the Cairns on the Discover Dogs stand at Crufts on the
Terrier day with me and my family and she really enjoyed this, she
never stopped talking and gave many people her expert advice.
Doreen was part of the first Cairn Fun Day organized by Graham
Peers and his team. Doreen and Sonia would sit under the gazebo
taking the entries for the fun class’s and welcoming people in a way
that only they could.
Doreen’s other passion was “Dog Lost” the charity that helps reunite
owners with their lost dogs. She was like Miss Marple, no stone was
left unturned. If a Cairn was lost, Doreen and Roy would be on the
hotline, making posters and contacting people, it didn’t matter whether
they knew them or not, even the police in all areas of the country
were contacted, all that mattered to Doreen was getting the dogs back.
Our family and I will miss Doreen dreadfully, We are very sad for
our loss and I am sure many more people and Cairn Terriers will feel
the same.
ALAN FELTERS
(Landbuck)
Judge Elect for the
CTC Championship Show
2013
I showed my parents’ Yorkshire Terrier
at a local fete while at school, once. He
came third in his class.
That was my sum experience of showing dogs until our Lucy came
along in 1980. We took her to obedience classes but didn’t enjoy it
and it was suggested we take her to ringcraft.
At their members Limited show Lucy won two classes and was
awarded Reserve Best Puppy in Show, so proud. Lucy never went on
to greater things but now we were hooked on dog showing going to
exemption shows and local open shows nearly every weekend. There
were a lot of shows to attend then.
In partnership with Richard Rumens our first champion was made up
in 1988.
My first judging appointment was at Epsom Racecourse in October
1984 with an entry of 32 and in 1994 I awarded my first pair of CCs
at Midland Counties.
I have judged our breed in Denmark, Sweden and Finland enjoying
the experience, learning the different style of judging procedure to
that in the UK.
I always enjoy showing our Cairns at the CTC championship shows at
Alva with its beautiful setting and the friendly atmosphere. I look forward
eagerly to judging there in 2013
IT’S A HARD LIFE BEING A MODEL....
..By Bracken Minto (AKA Crossbury Saffron)
My mummy has told me I
have been selected to star as
TOTO in a local photo shoot
for Best Scottish Wedding
Magazine. She seems thrilled,
I am not!! Does she not
realise I just want to snooze all
day?
The day has arrived and my
chauffeur has arrived to take
me to Selkirk. Thank goodness
it is not an early start as I am
an old dear and need my
beauty sleep!
I’m driven to a local old mill building which has been renovated into
a fancy new photographic studio. I am met by lots of fuss and much
ado about nothing. Who are all these people? Why are there so
many? And what the heck is that? (Turns out it’s a scarecrow). I have
a sneaky little wee on HIM!
I am led into the dressing room and given yet another pampering!
Hey I’ve already had a shampoo and set from mummy! Grrr! I smell
like Harvey Nichols fragrance department, and look like a movie star.
I really don’t have a clue what is going on here. There are lots of
people rushing around, lots of lovely young ladies in lovely white
dresses, and then there is me - what am I supposed to do?
18
I sit around for a while, then its all go, I am placed on a bale of straw
and there is a beautiful young lady standing next to me. Dorothy is
her name, and she keeps calling me Toto! (My name is Bracken and
as a typical Cairn I don’t always even answer to that!) But hey this
looks like fun so I will just go with the flow - keep the treats coming
and I will do anything you want! I pose for the cameras and get
placed in all sorts of positions. I could get used to this - it is really
great fun! I am then moved over to the yellow brick road and meet
with the scarecrow, tinman and the wicked witch. I am a little scared
I want a cuddle. Mummy!
After a few hours it is all over and then I am rewarded by lots of cuddles
and kisses from the lovely ladies who have been with me all day.
This is the life - cuddles and treats! I don’t get this at home all day as
mummy works and I only get my cuddles at night time! I’m hanging
around for the rest of the day until my chauffeur can return at 5pm.
There’s a nice long walk for me tonight, then bed for lots of
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s! It really has been a hard day.
My mummy is so proud of me and loves the photos she has been given
from Lloyd Smith Photography.
Note re Item iv of A2 assessment procedure - Mock Classes
Aim
This procedure enables the assessment of judges prior to inclusion on an A2 list
to take place in a situation other than a licensed show. It is essential that this
procedure reflects exactly all the other aspects of assessment that would occur at
a licensed show. The mock classes should be run exactly as they would be at a
show. The assessment will take into account:
Ring Procedure
Appreciation of Breed Type
Requirements
A minimum of 12 dogs, preferably including dogs with enough variation in age
and quality to enable the formation of at least two classes. It is helpful for some
dogs to be in more than one class to see how the candidate copes with repeat
entries.
One steward
Two assessors
59
Ring laid out as it would be at a show
Procedure
This should in all ways follow standard show procedure.
The candidate will judge the dogs in exactly the same way as they would at a
licensed show. This will include placing five dogs in order and writing a critique
on the first two.
Assessment
The assessors will report their findings to the Kennel Club using the standard
assessors’ form.
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE
BY
FERELITH SOMERFIELD
is an account of the reasons and
discussions surrounding changes to the
Cairn Terrier Breed Standard
in 1982
(article first published 1986)
THE STANDARD
FERELITH SOMERFIELD (OUDENARDE)
One of the proposals to come out of successive World Conference
of Kennel Clubs has been the desire for International
Breed Standards. As a result our Kennel Club decided to revise
the British Standards, setting down a new format, and order of
headings, to bring then into line with the American standards,
and at the same time iron out any anomalies, comparisons with
other breeds or animals, and generally make them easier to
follow.
Ironically, while some of these aims may have been achieved,
no other country had made any move towards bringing their
Standards into line. Indeed it was discovered that the American
Kennel Club could make no pledges in this direction because
the Standards are owned by the individual parent breed clubs,
and not by the AKC at all. This used to apply in Britain but
when, after the war, a giant effort was made to produce one
Standard per breed - before each club had its own Standard -
the ownership, or responsibility for each standard, passed to the
Kennel Club. (While the new set of Standards is now reality we
are as far away as ever from the ideal of International Standards
and Mr MacDougall, the chairman of the Kennel Club’s general
committee, had pledged that no other revisions will be
undertaken in the immediate future).
So the alterations in the Cairn Terrier Standard came about
from a directive of the Kennel Club, not as a request from the
breed clubs. However, our Standard was a very simple one, and
I feel that our changes, or additions, have helped the standard
rather than taken away from it.
It was decided to hold a special meeting to discuss the changes
proposed by the Kennel Club and to make counter suggestions
where necessary. Each breed club chose two people to repre-
62
-sent its views. I remember the late Alick Hogg represented the
North Of Ireland Club. As the breed liaison representative I
acted as chairman. Each individual club sent its suggestions,
these were all carefully considered over the two-day period,
and a Standard was drawn up. This was sent to the Kennel Club
and the individual club committees again had a chance to
discuss it. The Kennel Club asked for some changes, as did the
individual clubs, but I must record that all sides were extremely
helpful and reasonable, and I rather gather that our breed has
been given the credit of being the easiest to deal with!
The obvious and most contentious change concerns the ideal
weight. There are many people who deplore the increase in
size of our cairns, and they feel that by raising the maximum
to 16lbs we may encouraging people to breed even bigger
dogs. Others felt that 14lbs was no longer realistic and that few
winning Cairns would be near that weight, and that by raising
the weight to 16lbs people take size more seriously and penalise
Cairns which were obviously larger. And by keeping the
lower weight of 14lbs in the wording, the need to keep within
this range would be emphasised. (We were also required to put
in a height measurement and this we took largely from the
figures given in the “Popular Cairn Terrier” by
Beynon/Fisher/Wilson).
Did members ever realise that in the old Standard there was no
reference to movement? I feel that this was a bad omission and
so at least the new Standard is an improvement in this aspect.
One phrase which had to go concerned the “general foxy
appearance” because the K.C. feels that a Standard should
describe the breed itself not refer to other breeds, or
animals, which the reader may never have seen.
I was inclined to argue this point until I discovered that we all
had different ideas as to what the phrase meant. I always
63
thought it was because the skull was broader than the foreface
with the latter being more pointed. Others thought it referred
to the Cairn working the hedgerows. Certainly it can’t refer to
expression, if my impression of a fox looking rather mean and
cunning is accurate, for a cairn is never that! Anyway as we
differed so much in our interpretation we conceded that perhaps
the Kennel Club was right.
However the other phrase which had to go for the same reason
was more serious. We all wanted to retain the words “ In order
to keep this breed to the best old working type, any resemblance
to a Scottish Terrier will be considered objectionable!
On behalf of the sub-committee I wrote to the Kennel Club
what I hoped was a good reasoned argument pleading for
retention, but I didn’t succeed. They recognised our concern
and suggested a phrase something like “Must not resemble a
big ribbed, low to ground, short backed......” I can’t remember
the exact words but we felt they were far too clumsy and so we
chose to do without them.
Other alterations are more straightforward, although I personally
feel the new colour clause is better as it lists the colours
which are not allowed: solid black, white and black and tan.
Also I am pleased that the hindquarters clause has been
strengthened, for this puts that much greater emphasis on this
important point.
It is now four years since the new Standard was accepted and
I have not heard any particular grouse or regret. One point
which is a relief is that there appear to be many more Cairns of
the correct size in the ring.
We tried to retain the original spirit of the Standard while
making the alterations required by the Kennel Club and also
some of our own, and in the main I think we succeeded.
CAIRN TERRIER BREED STANDARD
A Breed Standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics,
temperament and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for
function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times
be careful to avoid obvious conditions of exaggerations which would be
detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. From
time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the
potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges’ and breeders are
requested to refer to the Kennel Club website for details of such issues. If a
feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure.
Characteristics: Should impress as being active, game and hardy.
General Appearance: Agile, alert, of workmanlike, natural
appearance. Standing well forward on forepaws. Strong quarters.
Deep in rib, very free in movement. Weather-resistant coat.
Temperament: Fearless and gay disposition, assertive but not
aggressive.
Head and Skull: Head small, but in proportion to body. Skull broad,
a decided indentation between the eyes with a definite stop. Muzzle
powerful, jaw strong but not long or heavy. Nose black. Head well
furnished.
Eyes: Wide apart, medium in size, dark hazel. Slightly sunk with
shaggy eyebrows.
Ears: Small, pointed, well carried and erect, not too closely set nor
heavily coated.
Mouth: Large teeth. Jaw strong with perfect, regular and complete
scissor bite, ie upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set
square to jaw.
Neck: Well set on, not short.
Forequarters: Sloping shoulders, medium length of leg, good but
not too heavy bone. Forelegs never out at elbow. Legs covered with
harsh hair.
65
Body: Back level, medium in length. Well sprung deep ribs, strong
supple loin.
Hindquarters: Very strong muscular thighs. Good, but not
excessive, bend of stifle. Hocks well let down, inclining neither in nor
out when viewed from the rear.
Feet: Forefeet, larger than hind, may be slightly turned out. Pads
thick and strong. Thin, narrow or spreading feet and long nails
objectionable.
Tail: Short, balanced, well furnished with hair but not feathery.
Neither high nor low set, carried gaily but not turned down towards
back.
Gait: Very free-flowing stride. Forelegs reaching well forward. Hind
legs giving strong propulsion. Hocks neither too close nor too wide.
Coat: Very important. Weather-resistant. Must be double-coated
with profuse, harsh but not coarse, outer coat, undercoat short, soft
and close. Open coats objectionable. Slight wave permissible.
Colour: Cream, wheaten, red, grey or nearly black. Brindling in all
these colours acceptable. Not solid black or white, or black and tan.
Dark points such as ears and muzzle very typical.
Weight and Size: Approximately 28cm to 31 cm (11 to 12 inches) at
withers but in proportion to weight – ideally 6 to 7.5 kgs (14 to 16
lbs).
Faults: Any departure from the foregoing points should be
considered a fault and the seriousness of the fault should be in exact
proportion to its degree, and its effect upon the health and welfare of
the dog.
Note: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully
descended into the scrotum.
dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate
veterinary attention if and when required.
2. Will agree without reservation that any veterinary
surgeon who performs an operation on any of their
(not accompanying a dog).
14. Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics
of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead
any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.
15. Before breeding a litter, equal consideration should
be given to type, temperament, health and
soundness. Nervous or aggressive dogs should not
be bred from.
68
16. All owners, irrespective of the number of
litters they breed, must comply with the
following:
no bitch to be mated under one year old
no more than four litters from any one bitch
no bitch to be mated who will have reached the age
of eight at the date of whelping without special
dispensation from the Kennel Club (see KC Year
Book B22 c(2))
In addition the following applies to breeders of five or
more litters per year:
no more than one litter per year per bitch
Owners need to acquaint themselves with the relevant
legislation in their country and Kennel Club requirements.
17. All breeding should be aimed at the improvement of
the Breed. Members should do all in their power to
discourage breeding from clearly inferior specimens
and those members who own stud dogs should
refuse stud service to such specimens. Breeders
should inform any person/persons prior to the use
of their stud dog(s) or mating of their bitch(es) of
any known problems that may affect the future
health of the breed.
Particular care should be taken where the owner of
the bitch is not a member of a Cairn breed club
registered by the Kennel Club.
69
18. No Member should breed a litter unless he/she has
the time and facilities to devote proper care and
attention to the rearing of the puppies and the wellbeing
of the dam and no Member should provide
owner of the bitch has such time and facilities.
19. No member should breed a litter unless he/she is
reasonably sure of finding homes for the puppies.
No puppies should leave the breeder before the age
of eight weeks.
19. (A) Members will when breeding dogs adopt as a
minimum standard the principles, requirements and
recommendations as embodied in the Kennel Club’s
Assured Breeder Scheme. It is recommended that, if
appropriate, members who breed should apply to
join the scheme
20. Puppies/adults cannot be exported unless the
DEFRA guidelines have been followed regarding age
and health regulations for the country of import
and, where age is not specified, not before twelve
weeks of age.
21. No Cairns should be sold to countries where they
are not protected by anti-cruelty laws. (If in doubt
consult DEFRA, RSPCA or The Kennel Club)
22. No Cairns should be sold to laboratories, pet shops
or dealers in dogs, or to persons known to sell stock
to any of the above, nor should stud services be
provided for such persons. (A dealer is defined as
any person who regularly buys stock for sale at a
profit. A person who buys a Cairn as an agent for a
known individual is not necessarily a dealer).
23. Prospective buyers of Cairns should be screened for
suitability and should be advised of the
characteristics of the Cairn Terrier as a breed with
the need for grooming and exercise. Cairns should
70
not be sold to homes where they will be on their
own all day.
24. No Cairn which has a physical defect, or which
shows any definite departure from the Standard,
should be sold without the buyer being made fully
aware of such defect or departure from the
Standard and its possible consequences.
25. Any deliberate cross-breeding will be considered to
be detrimental to the breed and is contrary to the
Breeders’ Code of Ethics.
26. Where appropriate The Kennel Club documents
should be provided as soon as possible. It is
undesirable that unregistered stock should be used
for breeding. No Cairn that is unregistered or is
from unregistered or partly unregistered parentage
should be sold without the buyer being aware that
he/she will be unable to register it with The Kennel
Club.
27. It should be impressed on buyers that they should
contact the breeder in the event of any problem
with the Cairn. Breeders should make every effort to
be of assistance in these circumstances.
28. Advertising by Members should be as factual as
possible. Misleading exaggeration or unfounded
implications of superiority should not be used.
Members should refrain from making unfair or
untrue statements about dogs or practices of
others.
29. Officers or Committee Members of the Cairn clubs
are always ready to help with any queries or
problems.
Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from
club membership, and/or disciplinary action by the
Kennel Club and/or reporting to the relevant
authorities for legal action, as appropriate.
Time certainly doesn’t wait for no man and definitely not for woman
that’s for sure!! Where does the time go? Club editors have been
asking me for weeks now for the CTRF report and it’s now the middle
of January and only just being written. It’s always something that I put
off doing until the last minute, but time has now run out!!
2012 has seen the launch of the new CTRF website, built and managed
by Alison Hargreaves, who is one of the many people who are now
members of the ‘Friends’ of the CTRF and willing to give up their time
and expertise to help out whenever and wherever they can.
The eBay listing was launched in November 2011 and it has really
taken off with Maggie Machin at the helm, she has been given the
accolade of ‘Top Rated Seller Status’ by eBay. We have had lots of
items donated to the CTRF throughout the year from hand knitted dog
coats and dog walking gloves to collectable Cairn memorabilia and
items from the CTRF stall that you see me selling at the Cairn Club
shows. These items are not only being sold to people in this country,
but all over the world including Australia, New Zealand, America,
France, Sweden and lots more, so why not try it yourself…………………………
www.ebay.co.uk/sch/cairntrescue-2008 Selling donated items this
way has proved to be quite a money spinner and this money is used
mainly to help pay veterinary expenses for the Cairns we rescue.
Jane Metcalf-Sault our membership Secretary for the Friends of the
CTRF has also been busy this year, as the interest in eBay has had a
‘knock on effect’ with not only increasing the visitors to our website,
but also people wanting to join the Friends of the CTRF. The membership
to the Friends stands at approx. 600, but it is growing each month
and keeps Jane very busy!!
Talking about being busy, the 3 to 4 weeks run up to Christmas was
very busy as 10 Cairns came into rescue one after the other and there
didn’t seem to be any let up. This is the most we have had in such a
72
short space of time. Their ages ranged from 11 weeks to 11 years and
all of them were re-homed before Christmas with the exception of the
11 year old as he needed a short course in ‘social behaviour’ and the
second with the same problem who went to a ‘foster home’. Both of
these ‘wayward’ boys have been placed in their new homes and are
settling in well.
Throughout the year 62 Cairns were ‘adopted’, however a further 8
were put to sleep due to poor temperaments.
We still post out forms to people who are looking to re-home a Cairn,
but a lot of our success stories can be accredited to our website.
Whenever we have a Cairn to re-home and no one waiting who is
suitable to take on a particular dog then we include its details and
photograph on the ‘rescue page’ of the CTRF website and it’s amazing
how much interest there is from the general public.
We also try to help other dog rescues if they have any Cairns that have
been handed in or found straying. We include their website link on our
website rescue page and usually a home is found for them within a few
days.
There is a downside on using the internet as every other week a Cairn
‘free to good home’ can be found on Gumtree, Epups, Pre Loved etc.
One day last week I looked on Gumtree and found 34 advertisements
for Cairn Terriers one was free to a good home and when I enquired
about it a home had been found for it, I just hope that it’s a good home
and they won’t just sell the dog on. There was also an 11 week old
puppy advertised by a K.C. Approved Breeder???? Another advert
stated “Would you like hours of entertainment, then buy one of these
pups”.
You can’t tell me that people who can sell their dogs this way are
reputable breeders and truthfully care for their dogs. This year we have
re-homed two 11 week old Cairn puppies and both of them were sold
via the internet…..I think this says it all about internet selling!!!
With thanks to the CTRF team of Trustees for their help and support
throughout the year, also grateful thanks to our volunteer helpers and
fosterers, who turn out with very little notice to fetch and carry dogs
from A to B or to ‘foster’ a dog in their own home rather than it going
73
into kennels. Our job would be much more difficult without their help.
Thanks also to the eagle eyed members who trawl the websites looking
for dogs that need our help, two such Cairns have been saved from
‘death row’ this week, because their plight had been spotted by one of
them.
To all Club members a very big thank you for your support throughout
the year it is very much appreciated.
With best wishes
CAIRN TERRIER HEALTH GROUP
2012 REPORT
The Cairn Terrier is luckily a fairly healthy and long lived breed
and no specific disease has been reported in significant number.
All received information is however very important in trying to
monitor the health situation and enable detection of problems
that may become more prevalent. Many thanks to those who
have contributed through case reporting and updates !
It does however have to be understood that voluntary health
reporting can not offer statistically valid information and may just
represent the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Most cases of disease are also
typically reported by pet owners. ‘Have you told the breeder?’ is
always the question asked every time an owner makes contact
about a case of serious disease or concern. It is surprising how
often the answer is ‘No’. The owner is then advised to also do so,
because such information is of course most important for a
breeder to receive. Sometimes the breeder has actually been
contacted but has been disinterested…
Some rather unusual cases have been reported this year. These
include a case of Parvo virus in a fully vaccinated puppy and
Pancreatitis in another puppy. These two youngsters were very
ill indeed but luckily recovered following intensive veterinary
treatment and dedicated care by their owners. Other reported
conditions include 1 case each of : Liver cancer in a 8 years old
dog; Endometriosis with anaemia; Nasal carcinoma; Immune
Mediated Meningitis. Cases of bladder stones and testicular
cancer have again been added. The latter can serve as a reminder
to have a veteran dog regularly checked for testicular
abnormalities! Treatment is usually straightforward and successful,
if the problem is spotted in time.
76
The Cairn Terrier breed in UK has got only two conditions (those
mentioned below) included as Kennel Club health screening
recommendations under its Assured Breeder Scheme (ABS).
Many other breeds have got a number of tests that are required
under the scheme, so our breed is fortunate.
Porto Systemic Shunt (PSS), or Liver Shunt.
Only a couple of cases have been reported this year, but they
are still lacking follow-up and validation. The research into congenital
PSS is ongoing at Utrecht University and two papers
have been published by the team there during 2012. It is stated
that a genome-wide study of the extrahepatic form (the one
affecting Cairn Terriers) is now at an advanced stage. This
statement can however not be taken as the advent of a DNA test
just around the corner. Bile Acid testing is certainly the only
available option for now and for some more time. This test is, as
mentioned before, now KC recommended, so not using it can
potentially have serious consequences to a breeder, if a puppy
is found to suffer from PSS and pre-sale testing has not been
undertaken.
The reported number of Bile Acid (BA) tested litters has not
increased, despite the ABS recommendation. It is of course very
possible that breeders have their litters tested and forget to let us
know. There also seems to be something of a North-South divide
in BA testing/reporting, because a greater proportion of breeders
in Scotland have, as usual, contributed test results than those
south of the border. Please let us know if your litters have been
BA tested, even if the test results are clear!
Ocular melanosis (OM), Abnormal pigment deposition (APD)
No validated cases have been reported this year, although
information has been received on a couple of suspect cases.
Eye examination has been arranged and offered at subsidised
cost at the yearly Joint Open Show for many years now. The
examination did however not take place this year due to lack of
interest. This is very worrying since OM/APD is a very painful
condition, once it has progressed to glaucoma. It is an inherited
condition, but the progression varies so that the first sign can be
77
detected, during a specialist eye examination, from any age
between less than 2 years and 6-7 years, or even older. All
breeding stock should therefore be examined not only once, at
the age of 2, but every two years thereafter.
Dawn Inett had again organized an Eye Examination session
where 9 dogs in total were examined. 4 other dogs were also
examined elsewhere. No evidence of OM/APD was found.
It has been a very troubled and difficult year in my household, so
I offer my sincere apologies for having been less accessible and
efficient than in previous years. Warmest thanks also to my
fellow Health Group workers, Yvonne Catto and Sonia White, for
their help!
Many Thanks to those who have given generous donations to
the Health Fund !
THE CAIRN TERRIER CLUB
ACCOUNTANT’S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF
THE CAIRN TERRIER CLUB
I report on the accounts of club for the year ended 31 December
2012
RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS AND AC-
COUNTANT
The club members are responsible for the preparation of the
accounts. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts and to
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
BASIS OF ACCOUNTANT’S STATEMENT
My examination is carried out in accordance with normal accounting
procedures. An examination includes a review of the
accounting records kept by the club and a comparison of the
accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration
of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and
seeks explanations from the club concerning any such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that
would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express
an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
INDEPENDENT ACCOUNTANT’S STATEMENT
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my
attention to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in
order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be
reached.
