Newman Aguiar I had to consult Wikipedia to jog my memory of what a litmus test really is outside of the political context that is familiar today. Litmus is a mixture of dyes that when infused into filter paper can be calibrated to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Blue litmus paper turns red under acidic conditions and red litmus paper turns blue under alkaline conditions. As I sat at a back table during Professor Gene Nichol’s presentation to the club, it was interesting watching who was turning red and who was turning blue. Many like me, who didn’t know anything about Professor Nichol may not have seen this coming. President Newman’s introduction, which tracks very closely Nichol’s profile on the UNC Law School website, describes a distinguished career as a constitutional law expert and law dean at both the University of Colorado and UNC with a long trail of awards and publications. When he left his post as law dean at UNC he became President of William and Mary. What the bio doesn’t mention is that his tenure there was the shortest in modern history and how he was forced to resign. With a little Google research you can find all the reasons for his departure including some pretty nasty attacks and his eloquent defense of the actions that he took that put him at odds with some big contributors and politicians in Virginia. The second reason it was hard to see what was coming was that Professor Nichol introduced his topic with self-deprecating humor (he is a former college quarterback now often assumed to have been a defensive lineman.) He also described the actions almost two years ago including the stimulus bill, TARP, and the bailouts of AIG, the banks and auto companies, as radical reactions to a very radical situation when the country faced immense danger. This reaction was bipartisan in the sense that it was recognized and initiated by the Bush administration and shaped and implemented by the Obama administration. Then the Professor began turning the corner and described some puzzlement at other crisis situations that may deserve equal alarm but aren’t generating much response. Over the past few years as Rotarians, our projects in the schools and programs provided by a number of local organizations have given us some direct and personal insight into the struggles many face to get an education and lift themselves out of poverty. But seldom do we get hammered with the slew of statistics offered by Professor Nichol about the magnitude of the problem. His argument is that we have lost our world leadership in health care, a larger and larger percentage of our population is slipping into poverty, economic mobility is disappearing and economic disparity increasing. Nobody’s color was actually changing in the room but it was easy to observe who was providing the professor with rapt attention and who was fidgeting or checking their Blackberrys. I wasn’t unaffected either. In spite of John and Margaret Zenner’s best efforts to persuade me otherwise, I lean to the left on the political spectrum and was proud to see that there are still a few passionate liberals roaming the world armed with intelligence, humor and statistics. Nevertheless, as the political climate gets more partisan and voice is given to extremes of acid and base never anticipated by any litmus test, the simplicity, the beauty and the necessity of the Four Way Test is ever more evident. … ….Submitted by Jay Zenner WELCOME – NEW MEMBER!
