Justification for Investment <strong>in</strong> Medical Student International<br />

Medical Education Experiences<br />

In encourag<strong>in</strong>g new applicants for medical student service abroad <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

nations, we have conducted an annual student-led review of <strong>the</strong> experiences of <strong>the</strong><br />

available student “veterans” who report to <strong>the</strong>ir underclassmen about <strong>the</strong>se<br />

life-chang<strong>in</strong>g experiences. Those who have reported formally this year (N= 80 of <strong>the</strong><br />

partial list, <strong>and</strong> still accru<strong>in</strong>g) have stated that it had been among <strong>the</strong> most valuable<br />

experiences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir medical school careers, with a number report<strong>in</strong>g that it was <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle most <strong>in</strong>tensive <strong>and</strong> reward<strong>in</strong>g medical learn<strong>in</strong>g experience of <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Many<br />

have spontaneously op<strong>in</strong>ed that this experience was life- <strong>and</strong> career-alter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

nearly all reported that <strong>the</strong>ir attitudes toward patients of different orig<strong>in</strong>s, economic<br />

<strong>and</strong> social status were changed to be more exp<strong>and</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong>clusive <strong>and</strong> appreciative.<br />

The motives for such applicants to service abroad have been varied with three<br />

major <strong>the</strong>mes: (1) A unique opportunity to get early <strong>and</strong> extensive responsibility for<br />

a wide variety of patient care under extraord<strong>in</strong>ary constra<strong>in</strong>ts of technology <strong>and</strong><br />

skilled manpower shortages for <strong>the</strong> treatment of common <strong>and</strong> exotic diseases <strong>in</strong>
