11. Requirements for promotion <strong>and</strong> graduation<br />

The yearly contract should be between a resident <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Center. It<br />

should <strong>in</strong>clude a statement to <strong>the</strong> effect that <strong>the</strong> undersigned underst<strong>and</strong> what is<br />

written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> document <strong>and</strong> agree to abide by it, followed by <strong>the</strong> date, <strong>the</strong>ir signatures,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> signature of a witness. It should probably cover <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g subjects:<br />

For <strong>the</strong> Resident:<br />

• An agreement to abide by <strong>the</strong> hospital’s written rules <strong>and</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of comm<strong>and</strong>;<br />

• An agreement to respect <strong>the</strong> hospital’s employees;<br />

• An agreement to abide by <strong>the</strong> rules, duties, <strong>and</strong> responsibilities laid out <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Resident’s Manual;<br />

• An agreement on <strong>the</strong> amount of salary, health, <strong>and</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g benefits to be<br />

provided by <strong>the</strong> hospital;<br />

• An agreement to abide by <strong>the</strong> Program Director’s decision <strong>in</strong> regards to<br />

promotion or dismissal.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Center:<br />

• An agreement to abide by <strong>the</strong> hospital’s written rules <strong>and</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of comm<strong>and</strong>;<br />

• An agreement to abide by <strong>the</strong> rules, duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities laid out <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Resident’s Manual;<br />

• An agreement on <strong>the</strong> amount of salary, health benefits, <strong>and</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g benefits<br />

to be provided by <strong>the</strong> hospital;<br />

• An agreement about <strong>the</strong> procedures to be followed if <strong>the</strong> Program Director<br />

sees that a resident is behav<strong>in</strong>g unethically, is <strong>in</strong>subord<strong>in</strong>ate, or is fall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d academically or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of his cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>and</strong> surgical<br />

skills.<br />

The contract should be signed by <strong>the</strong> resident, his Program Director, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hospital adm<strong>in</strong>istrator. Spell<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong>se responsibilities <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g will avoid misunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

provide stability <strong>and</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> enhance everyone’s performance.<br />
