At <strong>the</strong> end of his or her stay, <strong>the</strong> nurse must be able to do all <strong>the</strong> urgent, rout<strong>in</strong>e<br />

surgery, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n some of <strong>the</strong> urgent sugery which is seen less frequently. F<strong>in</strong>ally he/<br />

she is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> elective rout<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> nonrout<strong>in</strong>e surgery.<br />

Results<br />

By <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>ir tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> nurses had given local anaes<strong>the</strong>tics (4.7%),<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>al anaes<strong>the</strong>sia (69.6%) <strong>and</strong> to give a general anaes<strong>the</strong>sia us<strong>in</strong>g Ketalar (25.7%).<br />

They were able to do endotracheal <strong>in</strong>tubation, but this is less important as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

health centres would have <strong>the</strong> facilities for this.<br />

Seven nurses have already been tra<strong>in</strong>ed s<strong>in</strong>ce we <strong>in</strong>itiated this programme. Up to<br />

now all <strong>the</strong>se nurses have worked <strong>in</strong> remote places <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bush, <strong>the</strong> most distant ones<br />
