CHAPTER 3<br />

A Commitment to Voluntary Health Care<br />

Service<br />

Donald C. Mullen<br />

Mission hospitals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries supply critical help to those areas<br />

where <strong>the</strong> governments f<strong>in</strong>ancially are unable to susta<strong>in</strong> an adequate national medical<br />

program. In much of mission work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries, volunteers have<br />

always been a critical addition to that medical work. The call to medical mission<br />

service has never been limited to permanent career position <strong>in</strong> hospitals abroad.<br />

However <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, generally, on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational level <strong>the</strong>re has been <strong>the</strong> implicit<br />

assumption that full-time missionaries are necessary <strong>and</strong> volunteers have played a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>or function. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth <strong>and</strong> twentieth centuries <strong>the</strong> primary work<br />

of <strong>the</strong> church abroad was accomplished through <strong>the</strong> efforts of career professionals<br />

supported by ei<strong>the</strong>r churches or o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dividuals, but <strong>the</strong> past 30 years <strong>the</strong>re has<br />

been an ever <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g move to volunteerism <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se critical areas of <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

health care. Now, as we move <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> twenty-first century, it becomes <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

more important for us to search for more ways to volunteer our talents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical<br />

mission fields of <strong>the</strong> world. Indeed, <strong>the</strong>re is now great <strong>in</strong>terest amongst physicians<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r health care personnel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>and</strong> Canada to be a part of<br />

this service to our develop<strong>in</strong>g country friends <strong>in</strong> need.<br />

Monetary constra<strong>in</strong>ts have limited <strong>the</strong> abilities of many church groups <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

organizations to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> large numbers of career workers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se frontiers. But,<br />

this is not all bad by any stretch of <strong>the</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation! This opens <strong>the</strong> door of opportunity<br />

for all members of <strong>the</strong> medical profession to contribute <strong>in</strong> a major way to help<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n medical care <strong>in</strong> needy areas while at <strong>the</strong> same time ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a personal<br />

dimension <strong>in</strong> broaden<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong>to whole people who care about <strong>the</strong> needs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> less fortunate. Indeed, it has <strong>the</strong> potential of br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g missions closer to both<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> congregations <strong>and</strong> renew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> excitement <strong>and</strong> joy which can be<br />

ours through relationships with our bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> sisters around <strong>the</strong> world. Fresh<br />

new perspectives ga<strong>in</strong>ed from our partners <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries may also lead<br />

some of us to break out of a prov<strong>in</strong>ciality which <strong>in</strong> some areas may have weakened<br />

our spirit.<br />

Volunteer Medical Work<br />

Medical work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries is particularly appropriate for expansion<br />

of our volunteer network<strong>in</strong>g. Health care work has always been effective <strong>in</strong><br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g people toge<strong>the</strong>r. People who see car<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>and</strong>s personally concerned about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir well be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, body, <strong>and</strong> spirit are much more open to closer personal<br />

relationships. Recently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medical profession we have been blessed with many<br />

health care workers with a desire to serve <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capacity of short-term medical<br />
