• Establish an <strong>in</strong>stitute or committee for <strong>the</strong> study of appropriate<br />

need-oriented <strong>and</strong> affordable evidence-based surgical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g suitable for<br />

various national circumstances.<br />

• Establish sem<strong>in</strong>ars or colloquia for Third <strong>World</strong> surgeons to share experiences<br />

<strong>and</strong> techniques for solv<strong>in</strong>g surgical problems with <strong>in</strong>novative <strong>in</strong>expensive<br />

measures.<br />

• Encourage governments <strong>and</strong> colleges to provide for <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> surgical needs<br />

before mov<strong>in</strong>g to more complex <strong>and</strong> expensive options.<br />

• Establish a clear<strong>in</strong>g-house with advice for surgeons travel<strong>in</strong>g overseas to<br />

cover such matters as liability <strong>in</strong>surance, health needs, malarial <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

prophylaxis, etc.<br />

• Explore options to assist new tra<strong>in</strong>ees with manag<strong>in</strong>g student loans <strong>and</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r matters <strong>in</strong> order to facilitate <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>volvement abroad.<br />

• Promote <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>in</strong> General <strong>Surgery</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs of a<br />

“rural” tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g stream with a broader scope of experience.<br />

• Consider programs to br<strong>in</strong>g patients from unserved regions to North<br />

America for surgical care.<br />

The needs <strong>in</strong> our world for surgical care are grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> supply is dw<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We can do better. We must do better.<br />
