Centre <strong>in</strong> Kerala said, “The journal should stimulate a search for cancer strategies<br />

compatible with <strong>the</strong> socioeconomic realities <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries.” He states what<br />

is evident, that doctors <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries often prescribe advanced drug <strong>the</strong>rapy<br />

protocols discussed <strong>in</strong> Western journals. “This has jacked up treatment costs to such<br />

levels that cancer care has become <strong>in</strong>accessible to a large number of patients. The<br />

great majority of tumours <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g countries are diagnosed late, <strong>and</strong> resources<br />

are directed at treat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>curable conditions,” said Dr. Mohammad Al-Jarallah, who<br />

is Kuwait’s health m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>and</strong> also a consultant surgeon <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> journal’s jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

Editor-<strong>in</strong>-Chief. The full article provides several eye open<strong>in</strong>g examples <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>sights.<br />

This is an excellent step forward <strong>in</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> realities of health care <strong>in</strong><br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g countries. The communication of alternatives dem<strong>and</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> socioeconomic<br />

realities is worthy of credible useful reasearch of <strong>the</strong> highest order. The<br />

complexity of develop<strong>in</strong>g countries’ circumstances dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>the</strong> best <strong>and</strong> brightest<br />

to address <strong>the</strong> problems. Develop<strong>in</strong>g countries, much like <strong>the</strong> term Third <strong>World</strong>,<br />

denies <strong>the</strong> uniqueness <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuality of each nation <strong>and</strong> region. Resources <strong>and</strong><br />

problems vary so widely as to make <strong>the</strong> terms mean<strong>in</strong>gless <strong>and</strong> counterproductive.<br />

We must learn to be discern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> specific when enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> arena of country <strong>and</strong><br />

regional health matters. The Austral-Asian Journal of Cancer should be a beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of communication <strong>and</strong> a field of research that is orig<strong>in</strong>ated by professionals <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries <strong>and</strong> is about develop<strong>in</strong>g country health matters.<br />

The challenge is to comb<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation gleaned from <strong>the</strong> Western sources<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation generated <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g areas to apply to develop<strong>in</strong>g nations<br />

problems. The result should be a credible, legitimized body of research, articles <strong>and</strong><br />

reports that has its place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream of global health sciences communication.<br />

This body of <strong>in</strong>formation will go beyond <strong>the</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g experts from <strong>the</strong> West<br />

who arrive <strong>and</strong> def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>in</strong> Western terms <strong>the</strong>n vanish. This will beg<strong>in</strong> to<br />

put mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> purpose <strong>in</strong>to develop<strong>in</strong>g country-based professionals who are often<br />

highly frustrated by <strong>the</strong> technology <strong>and</strong> costly protocols <strong>the</strong>y read about on <strong>the</strong><br />

Web or o<strong>the</strong>r Western sources. Evidence-based practice is not widely affordable when<br />

<strong>the</strong> evidence is generated <strong>in</strong> an affluent community. Problem- <strong>and</strong> reality-based<br />

research <strong>and</strong> a new relevant body of literature <strong>and</strong> communication is needed.<br />

It is a time of change <strong>and</strong> progress. The literature as we have known it is <strong>in</strong> flux.<br />

Information is be<strong>in</strong>g distributed globally by a variety of facilitated technologies most<br />

of which are computer-related. Content is <strong>the</strong> issue ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> technology of<br />

communication. Admittedly <strong>the</strong> Internet is not fully developed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are many<br />

problems with <strong>the</strong> technology of <strong>the</strong> computer. But we have a tool that is so fast <strong>and</strong><br />

cheap that it is not wait<strong>in</strong>g for someone to use it but ra<strong>the</strong>r it is <strong>the</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g force of<br />

change. As <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> organizations adopt <strong>the</strong> technology, <strong>the</strong> forms of <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

exchange grow <strong>and</strong> modify our needs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> formats for <strong>in</strong>formation communication.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g is a list of <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> communication devices <strong>and</strong><br />

results of applications of <strong>the</strong> technology that are chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way we obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

use our <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

1. St<strong>and</strong>ard articles <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> health sciences archived <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e databases or on<br />

CDROMs <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r memory devices.<br />

2. The National Institutes of Health proposed database that will <strong>in</strong>clude not<br />

only peer-reviewed articles but expert-reviewed articles <strong>and</strong> work <strong>in</strong><br />

progress reports that will allow updat<strong>in</strong>g as research progresses. Virtually<br />

all submissions will be <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>and</strong> categorized. Commercial publishers<br />

are develop<strong>in</strong>g similar mega databases of <strong>in</strong>formation.
