3.4 Data Analysis<br />

In order to calculate the organic content, the mass <strong>of</strong> the reactor (mr), mass <strong>of</strong> the reactor with<br />

yard waste (mr+yw) and the mass <strong>of</strong> the reactor with carbonized yard waste (mr+cyw) were<br />

measured with a Denver Instrument Company XL-1810 balance. The organic content (OC) by<br />

mass percentage was given by the equation.<br />

The results <strong>of</strong> these calculations for each component are included in the next section <strong>of</strong> this<br />

report.<br />

The efficiency <strong>of</strong> byproduct collection was calculated as follows. The masses <strong>of</strong> the empty<br />

collection flasks (mf1,1 and mf2,1), and the masses <strong>of</strong> the collection flasks with <strong>of</strong>f-products (mf1,2<br />

and mf2,2) were measured gravimetrically. The collection efficiency (EF) was then given by the<br />

following equation. The results <strong>of</strong> these calculations for each component are included in the<br />

next section <strong>of</strong> this report.<br />

The char content <strong>of</strong> each yard waste component was calculated with three masses: the mass <strong>of</strong><br />

the carbonization reactor (mr), the mass <strong>of</strong> the reactor with prepared yard waste (mr+yw), and the<br />

mass <strong>of</strong> the reactor with carbonized yard waste (mr+cyw). Equation 4 was used to calculate this<br />

char content (CC).<br />
