Webster, '89 COVER STORY The University recruits new students employing an award winning promotional campaign focused on the theme "going places. " That wasn' t Wendy B. Webster's ideabut it could have been. She's been going places for years now, as an international studies major who graduated in May 1989 .. Along the way, she made quite an impression. She' s one of the " new academics" - a Presidential Scholar, an A student who was named an alternate for a national Truman Foundation Scholarship and earned both the Charles and Margaret Vonada Scholarship and the Michael and Susan Greenberg Foreign Language Award. Quite the adventurer, she has travelled around the world studying in Germany, Poland and most recently, Taiwan. Not bad for the product of tiny Audubon, Pennsylvania (population 1,200). Somewhere along the way, she found time to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. She served as the German Club president and was an active member of both the Badminton Club and Circle K. As a junior, with the respect of classmates, faculty and staff members, she was named a charter member of The Haven League. In January 1988, Webster was named the recipient of the Rotary International Scholarship, an award presented by the international service organization which she intends to use toward her graduate studies abroad.
SPRING AND SUMMER 1989 We have noted in earlier issues the success of the University in attracting quality students - students who are better prepared for college life and its academic demands. One measure of this progress, the Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of incoming freshmen, has shown steady improvement over the past five years with this year being no exception. The University offers these students more reasons to attend Lock Haven than ever before with incentives like the Presidential Scholars Program, the new Honors Program, by offering Board of Governors scholarships and a wide variety of scholarships and awards provided through the Lock Haven University Foundation. Better than one in every 10 graduates with honors - a 3.5 grade point average, or better. Students like James W. Pflugh, Timothy N. Ziegenfuss and Julie A. Augustine - all members of the Class of '89. Many will continue their education by attending graduate school. May PERSPECTIVE SPRING AND SUMMER 1989 IN THIS ISSUE -- PERSPECTIVE THE PRESIDE NT'S PERSPECTIVE P RESIDENT CRAIG DEAN WILLIS, 1989 graduates have been accepted into programs at Purdue University, the University of Maryland, The Pennsylvania State University and The Unjversity of Alaska, to name just several. The Uruversity offers programs for students of all ages. During the summer months, Lock Haven plays host to Elderhostel - week-long sessions of rruru courses focused on a particular area of study for students over the age of 50. There is the Summer Happening, where learning is great fun for children in grades one through six. For juruor and senior high school students, the Summer Enrichment Experience is designed for talented and gifted students. While the University encourages all students, there is particular pride in " the new academics" - those students who dig in and find learning a real adventure. The types of students who make teaching enriching, rewarding and, yes, fun . These are students who are involved and excel not only in the classroom, but in a variety of activities so impor- P H.D.
