12 ALUMNI AND CHAPTER NEWS Alumni Chapters Update Activities, Officers, for '89 Membership in the Bald Eagle Chapter of the Alumni Association now totals 183 according to President Lewis A. McGill, '50. Bald Eagle Chapter Dues are $4 per year payable to " Bald Eagle Chapter" and should be mailed to the Office of Alumni and External Relations, Akeley Hall, Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The zipcode is 17745. The Chapter has planned another bus trip to New York City during the holiday season. The trip is scheduled for Saturday, November 18. The cost will be approximately $55 and include round trip bus transportation from Lock Haven and a ticket for the Ractio City Music Hall Christmas program. G uests are welcome. Blair County Chapter A total of 35 attended the annual Blair County reunion for University graduates, this year's event held at the C alvin House in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Follow the Bald Eagles Against The Black Bears Alumni living in the New England states will want to mark Friday, October 6, on the calendar. The University Alumni Association is planning a reunion that evening, most likely in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, area. The reunion has been scheduled in conjunction with the Bald Eagle football team's matchup with the Black Bears of the University of Maine at Orono, Saturday, October 7. Information on the New England reunion can be obtained by contacting the Office of Alumni and External Relations at (717) 893-2021 . Lycoming County Chapter The Lycoming County (Pennsylvania) Chapter of the University Alumni Association awarded its annual $500 scholarship to Eric M. Shaffer, a 1989 graduate of Montgomery High School. The scholarship is named for Chapter member, Dr. Samuel Long, '30. Valeclictorian of his graduating class, Shaffer was class vice president, editor of the school yearbook and a member of the National Honor Society in addition to participating in many other activities. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Shaffer of Montgomery. The Chapter recently elected new officers. Donna Klinger Baker, '69, will serve as Chapter president with Dr. M . Louise Stabler, '48, the vice president, Anna Forse McCall, ' 30, secretary and Joseph H . Grafius, '77, the tre surer. Completing the Chapter Board are Dorothy Green, '47, Margaret Lupacchino Difrancesco, '86, Mary Ellen Lupton, '57, John E. Dice, '48, Donald Schick, '51, Dr. Long and past president LeRoy Keiler, '55. ROTC Honors Paul L. Frantz, '38 Retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Paul L. Frantz, '38, became the eighth distinguished alumnus to be inducted into the University Army ROTC Hall of Fame. Frantz was recognized during the annual military ball in April. The induction ceremony is held to honor a University graduate who has distinguished himsel£ in service to the United States, the community and the University. Commissioned an enSign in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1943, he served on the "License to Fly" Orders Near 400 Nearly 400 University alumni and frie nds have ordered official Bald Eagle license plates - but 500 are needed before the plates can be produced. Frantz retired from the Navy in 1974 following better than 30 years of service . He also served with the Veterans Administration and the U.S. Department of Education . ALUMNI WEEKEND '89 Alumni Awards Recognize Achievements of Four Professionals The University recognized the career achievements of four graduates as part of Alumni Weekend '89 events. The 1989 Distinguished Educator Award was presented to Paul A. "Babe" Mayer, '71, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A health and physical education teacher at Williamsport Senior High School, Mayer was named the 1988 Secondary Physical Education Educator of the Year by the National Association for Sports and Physical Education. George Teufel, '49, was named the University's 1989 Distinguished Service Award recipient. He is a social studies teacher at Jersey Shore Junior High School and the mayor of Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Two Alumni Achievement Award winners were named. David F. Riggs, '77, of Williamsburg, Virginia, earned an Alumni Achievement Award. He is a museum curator at the Un iversity Director of Alumni and External Relations lames C. Nancy Noon Marshall, '62, the executive director of the Binghamton Symphony Orchestra, Binghamton, New York, also earned an Alumni Achievement Award for her work. She resides in Johnson City, New York. Alumni Association President Thomas E. Elling, '66, and President-Elect Kathryn W. Lumley, '50, made the presentations.
