Anthony Alvino, Principal
Web Address: http://www.boardman.k12.oh.us
Boardman, Ohio February 2013 AP, UP I, BHS
The beginning of our second semester officially began
January 22. The start of the new semester brought
with it some changes in curriculum and personnel.
Our 7th and 8th grade students were involved in an
exchange involving Computer Tech and Art.
Steps are currently underway to increase our students’
opportunity for success in all grades. A number
of fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have
been selected to receive additional coaching on a
weekly basis within the school day at no expense to
parents. It is our goal to provide these students with
the understanding they need to be successful on the
Achievement Tests. As you know, BGMS was designated
Excellent with Distinction by the State of Ohio.
In addition, our regular classroom instructors are
working with their students during their STAR period.
Orders for the 2013 edition of Boardman Glenwood’s
yearbook, “The Spirit”, will be taken in homeroom from
February 11 through March 25, 2013. The full color
yearbooks are $15.00 and may only be ordered in
advance. Please make checks payable to “BGMS
PTA”.
Our second conference night will be held Thursday,
March 7. Additional information will be provided regarding
dates and times to secure an appointment
with various instructors.
Parents of eighth grade students will have the opportunity
to meet with high school personnel regarding
scheduling and requirements for BHS freshman. The
orientation will be held Thursday, February 28th at
7:00 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
SCIENCE PULSE
By Mr. Scott Lenhart, Coordinator
Now that we are halfway through the year students REALLY need to start thinking about what they are
going to do when they reach the high school. The guidance department will start discussing options and
course descriptions with the students in order to prepare for the high school. I know as a whole, the 8th
grade teachers pride themselves on preparing students for high school.
Boardman Glenwood’s eighth grade science curriculum is composed of a mix of Physical, Earth and Life
science based on the Ohio Content Standards. Throughout the year we will explore each of these three
branches of science. Some of the topics covered in eighth grade Physical Science are sound, light, the
laws of motion and basic chemistry. Earth Science has many umbrella divisions including geology, the
study of earth’s structure; paleontology, the study of ancient life; volcanology; seismology; astronomy
and oceanography. The Life Science standards include the traits organisms obtain through reproduction
and how these traits contribute to the survival of a species in its environment.
There is a direct relationship between science and mathematics. Science encompasses the arts of questioning,
hypothesizing, investigating, discovering and communicating. Mathematics provides clarity, order
and understanding. Because science and mathematics are intertwined in the real world, it logically
follows that they should be integrated in the classroom where students are preparing to function in that
world.
In February, our eighth grade students will be placed in one of four courses for ninth grade science at
Boardman High School. All students must earn three credits in science during their time in high school.
One credit must be in Life (biological) Science and one credit must be in Physical Science. When placing
a student in the proper course for ninth grade, Miss Kibby and I will look at several factors. First, as
mentioned above, there is a direct relationship between mathematics and science. Therefore the science
course your student will be taking will be directly affected by what math course they will be taking. Second,
we will judge your student’s performance in our science class. Another consideration that can come
in to play later is a student’s performance on the OAA. Guidance counselors from the high school will
visit BGMS in order to explain this to all eighth graders.
Here are the following BHS ninth grade course offerings for science:
1. Fundamental Life Science -- Parts 1 and 2
Recommendation by the eighth grade science teacher and students must be reading
two levels below grade level; students scheduling Pre-Algebra and English 1R; this is a
remedial course and designed only for those students with extremely low ability
2. Integrated Science -- Parts 1 and 2
Recommendation by eighth grade science teacher; students scheduling Pre-
Algebra should schedule Integrated Science unless they meet the criteria for Fundamental
Life Science
(continued on following page)

SCIENCE PULSE (continued from previous page)
3. General Science: Earth and Physical
Recommendation by eighth grade science teacher
4. Advanced Biology 1
Recommendation by eighth grade science teacher; Algebra 1 concurrently, plus
recommended minimum score of 420 on OAT/Science
Things to consider when scheduling Advanced Biology 1:
● Students should be enrolled in Algebra 1 concurrently.
● A minimum score of 420 on the OAT (Ohio Achievement Test/Science) is recommended.
• A or B+ in eighth grade science
• Good logic, critical thinking skills, and study habits are required.
● The course moves at a rapid pace and three chapters are tested at one time.
● The prescribed sequence after Advanced Biology is AP Biology or Biology 2. Strong
writing skills are required as all tests are in essay form.
● Students who have completed Advanced Biology and AP Biology or Biology 2 must
earn a physical science credit in Chemistry or Physics.
● If unsuccessful once enrolled in Advanced Biology, there is often no way to schedule the
student in an alternative science class. The student is now behind a ½ credit in science.
● An alternative route may be to schedule Earth and Physical Science as a freshman, and
then take Advanced Biology as a sophomore.
In addition, 9th graders who take Advanced Biology 1 should note that they will have various options
for 10th grade based upon the grades they receive in Advanced Biology 1. The options are as
follows:
Final Grade = A Proceed to AP Biology
Final Grade = B Proceed to Anatomy/Physiology
Final Grade = C Proceed to Earth/Physical Science
Please take some time to sit with your student to discuss their options for all of their classes and remind
them that they still have a semester to go in middle school. Teachers will talk as a team and use
their best judgment to recommend what they feel will be best for your child. Feel free to contact your
child’s teachers for suggestions or if you have any questions or concerns.

CLINIC NEWS
By Mrs. Annette Vrable, R.N.
Cold and flu season has arrived! The peak season is from late December to early March. The flu (also known
as influenza) is oen confused with the common cold, but symptoms tend to develop quickly and are usually
more severe than the typical sneezing and stuffiness of the cold. Fever is always associated with the flu, and
usually between 101-102 degrees but can occasionally be as high as 106.
Prevenon is the best treatment. Hopefully many of you have received the flu shot. It is recommended for
all children and adults with a few excepons. Consult with your doctor or the Mahoning County Health Dept.
for more informaon.
To keep germs in place, pracce these habits with your family:
-WASH HANDS OFTEN! It may be a good idea for your child to carry a small bole of anbacterial gel
to use before lunch and between classes.
-Avoid sharing drinking and eang utensils with others.
-Avoid sleeping in the same room with someone who has the flu: the virus is easily spread in the air.
-Cover your cough: Use a ssue, not your hand to cover a sneeze or cough.
-Most important is to keep up your resistance by following a good diet, drinking lots of fluids and
geng plenty of rest.
If you suspect your child has the flu, contact your family physician. Please keep them home if he/she has a
fever 100 degrees or higher or if they have been voming.
Scoliosis screening for the 6 th , 7 th and 8 th graders took place Jan. 18 th ,19 th and 20 th . Scoliosis is defined as an
abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that usually develops in middle or late childhood, before puberty.
Scoliosis is not preventable, however early detecon and treatment during a child’s growing years is the key
to keep it from progressing. The purpose of the screening is to help alert parents to the warning signs of
scoliosis. Only a physician can diagnose scoliosis. If you should receive a referral leer from me regarding
your child’s screening, don’t panic, but do follow up with your doctor.

MATH ADDITIONS
By Mrs. Holly Gozur, Coordinator
The month of February is the time our eighth grade math teachers (Mr. Wade and Mrs.
Gozur) will recommend a math course to each 8 th grade student at BGMS for next school year.
The Mathematics department at the high school offers courses covering topics from basic
arithmetic to integral calculus. All students regardless of interest and ability are obligated by
law to take all four years of mathematics. Courses in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2/
Trigonometry are offered at three levels: Integrated, College Prep, and Advanced.
When recommending the eighth grade students for freshman year math, Mr. Wade and
Mrs. Gozur take many different factors into consideration. They look at previous math
achievement scores, current grades for the first two nine weeks, and most importantly the students’
ability levels seen by each teacher while working with the students in their own classrooms.
Both teachers want the students here at BGMS to be challenged, yet successful, and
therefore they expect the effort from the students to reflect the recommendation. It is extremely
important that parents encourage and support their students in the recommendations
given by the teachers.
The following are possible courses your student may be recommended to take next school
year:
Pre-Algebra Part 1 & Part 2 ( Co-teaching available)
Pre-Algebra is designed to develop the necessary arithmetic skills to function successfully in a
Judy Garzanich did not get stung at the
Spelling Bee!
The contestants were all abuzz in the gymnasium on Friday morning,
January 11, 2013. Under the direction of Mrs. Rothman, Mrs. Piper, and
Miss Glozer, the spelling bee began at 9:00 with countless parents and visitors
attending. At 9:30, a break was given to the remaining contestants as
the entire student body found their seats to witness the conclusion of the
bee. Idyll, galvanize, exfoliate, baccalaureate, delicatessen, faux, haughtiness,
enamel, and gargoyle were just a few of the challenging words in the
bee. As the bee came to an end, Morgan Phillips and Judy Garzanich battled
for the limelight. Judy finally prevailed by correctly spelling hibiscus. This
stellar speller will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program on
Saturday, March 16, 2013 on the campus of Youngstown State University.
Winter Writing Assignment in the Limelight
Mia Bruno
Miss O’Brien’s Class
Christmas as a Dog!
One day, I woke up to find myself in the middle of a winter wonderland! There were bright red and
green lights everywhere. Smiles and laughter lit up the whole room. Red and white candy canes were bursting
with peppermint! Last but not least, we had a gigantic Christmas tree. Man, wasn’t that something? For me, it
was as tall as a skyscraper. This was the most wonderful time of the year. Christmas is in the air, and I know
that for a fact.
I ran around the house gazing at all the decorations with amazement. This is my favorite time of the
year. I didn’t even realize it was Christmas Eve until my brothers and sisters put up their stockings. As you
can probably tell, I am a very eager, energetic, and joyful dog! The problem is that tonight I have to do something
that takes lots of sneaking around (which I am terrible at), but I am determined to do this. I have tried
every other year, but it hasn’t worked. My plan is to sneak into Santa’s sleigh and go to the North Pole. This
is the year it’s going to happen.
Well, everyone in my house is sound asleep in their beds. My mission has started. As I creep out of
my bed to the couch, I hear footsteps but not any ordinary footsteps. I had to think quickly, and my only
choice was to hide behind the Christmas tree, so I ran as quickly and sneakily as I could, and I made it. Santa
must have heard me because he picked me up and said, “Hey there, Little Buddy! Want to come for a ride
with me? I’ve been needing an extra helper, and you fit the job perfectly!”
I answered, “YES!” forgetting that he can’t understand me, but he did! I was surprised but not too surprised
because he is, after all, Santa! We went into his sleigh and off we went!
He took me all over the world! I never thought about how many children there were. You wouldn’t
imagine how many presents were delivered. We probably delivered billions of gifts.
We are now back at my home, and I’m a little sad this is over but also so excited. He could’ve picked
any other dog, but he picked me. It must have been for a reason but a reason that I will never know. He returned
me to my bed and said, “Get some rest, Little One!”
I said, “I will. Thank you so much for that amazing journey! I will never forget it!” I watched him fly
away and went to bed with a smile on my face.
