• Train more health workers <strong>to</strong> serve couples, conduct couples’ counselling and testing<br />

and provide supported disclosure <strong>to</strong> clients <strong>who</strong> need support. Where supported<br />

disclosure is required, counsellors should be skilled enough <strong>to</strong> provide the service or<br />

appropriately counsel the client on which approach <strong>to</strong> useTASO should give priority<br />

<strong>to</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> women economic empowerment and equipping clients with life skills<br />

during programming <strong>to</strong> ensure that they are supported <strong>to</strong> disclose without fear <strong>of</strong><br />

negative outcomes<br />

Traditional and cultural leaders need <strong>to</strong> be involved and educated about issues <strong>of</strong> gender<br />

inequality, HIV/AIDS and PMTCT.<br />

For Health workers<br />

Given the consequences posed by <strong>sexual</strong>ly transmitted strains <strong>of</strong> HIV <strong>to</strong> <strong>partners</strong>,<br />

prevention information giving <strong>to</strong> enhance adherence as well as building behavioural<br />

interventions skills interventions will be required by the clients<br />

• Regular health talks and use <strong>of</strong> IEC materials about HIV disclosure should be made<br />

more available <strong>to</strong> support clients.<br />

• To further de-stigmatise the community, encourage supportive structures at facility<br />

and community levels. Discordant couples’ clubs, Positive men’s union (POMU),<br />

Mama’s club and other Peer support groups that are instrumental in sero<strong>status</strong><br />

disclosure and other prevention strategies like PMTCT, FP and increased male<br />

involvement in prevention and care services.<br />

For Clients<br />

• PLHIV in the Peer support groups can be encouraged <strong>to</strong> share information and<br />

experiences with their peers <strong>who</strong> have not disclosed and support them <strong>to</strong> do so.<br />

• The music dance and drama sensitisations conducted by TASO clients <strong>who</strong> are open<br />

about their sero<strong>status</strong> and have gone public should be targeted as another avenue <strong>to</strong><br />

share information and demonstrate how disclosure <strong>to</strong> <strong>sexual</strong> <strong>partners</strong> could be<br />

conducted.<br />
