During the discussion, the male participants also acknowledged that many women are<br />

willing <strong>to</strong> disclose as long as they have their own income so that in case their <strong>partners</strong><br />

abandon them, they will not be stranded.<br />

Most women are economically dependant and as a result can only disclose when<br />

they have their own income<br />

Another male participant added;<br />

When a woman has economic support she can easily disclose; therefore there is<br />

need for women economic empowerment<br />

4.6.3 Peer Support<br />

Support from peers is very critical in disclosure; it even favours adherence <strong>to</strong> treatment.<br />

Participants in the FGD reported how they were supported by peers and how they have<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten persuaded their peers <strong>to</strong> disclose by sharing their own experiences. Participants <strong>who</strong><br />

are involved in peer counselling and community sensitisation have made a significant<br />

contribution in supporting their peers <strong>to</strong> disclose as they share their own experiences and<br />

other HIV prevention information with them.<br />

We personally go <strong>to</strong> the homes <strong>of</strong> other clients and support them during<br />

disclosure or share our experiences during the peer support group meetings<br />

about how we also managed <strong>to</strong> do the same. I think increased male involvement in<br />

our peer support groups will make a lot <strong>of</strong> difference in reducing HIV<br />

transmission because in the groups, we as peers share important information like<br />

condom use, Family planning and positive prevention<br />

Since I disclosed my <strong>status</strong> in my village, I have supported many <strong>of</strong> my peers <strong>to</strong><br />

open up <strong>to</strong>o. I am referred <strong>to</strong> as the “TASO person” and I have become a<br />
