rooted in and developed out <strong>of</strong> contextual interactions.<br />

In qualitative research confirmability refers <strong>to</strong> the extent <strong>to</strong> which the data confirms the<br />

general findings and not simply the products <strong>of</strong> the researcher’s bias. This was achieved<br />

by comparing the findings and the interpretations <strong>to</strong> the wider literature and was also<br />

done by giving feedback <strong>of</strong> the findings at the end <strong>of</strong> the interview <strong>to</strong> the participants and<br />

checking whether they agree with them,as well as the support and checking provided by<br />

the supervisor.<br />

3.7 Ethical Considerations.<br />

Permission <strong>to</strong> proceed with the study was obtained from the Direc<strong>to</strong>r: Planning and<br />

Strategic Information in TASO, Uganda, the Deputy Direc<strong>to</strong>r in Charge <strong>of</strong> Research and<br />

the Centre Manager, TASO Mulago. Approval <strong>to</strong> carry out the study was obtained from<br />

UWC Research and Ethics committee.<br />

Permission was also sought from the participants before the start <strong>of</strong> the individual<br />

interviews and focus group discussion.The purpose <strong>of</strong> the research was explained at the<br />

outset <strong>of</strong> the interview, participants were assured <strong>of</strong> confidentiality .Each participant was<br />

<strong>to</strong>ld that the interview would be tape-recorded. It was emphasized that participation was<br />

voluntary and that individuals had the right <strong>to</strong> terminate their participation at any time.<br />

A written informed consent explaining the objectives, the benefits and potential risks <strong>of</strong><br />

the study (Appendix 2) was obtained from each participant. Participants were requested<br />

<strong>to</strong> sign a consent form and they were reminded that they had a right <strong>to</strong> withdraw from the<br />

study if they wished <strong>to</strong>. They were informed that this would not in any way interfere with<br />

their accessing services in TASO. Participants’ confidentiality was also assured<br />

throughout the study period. The information provided was treated confidentially and<br />

would only be used for study purposes. Participants were encouraged <strong>to</strong> ask questions<br />

and assured that their names would not appear any where in this study report.<br />
