Miller claims second-highest score
Kyle Manion and Elizabeth Queen, co-champions of the NCHA Classic Challenge Non-Pro with 220.5
points on Holly Is Smooth and Razor, respectively.

Criminal, scored 220.5 points last
night to tie with Elizabeth Queen
for the 2012 championship.
Manion was aboard Holly
Is Smooth, by Smooth As A
Cat, while Queen claimed the
co-championship on Razor, by
Abrakadabracre, and scored 212
on Lil Sting Rey to split 12th
place.
Megan Miller preceded Queen
and Manion as the first rider in
the second set and scored 219.5
points on Moonstruck Player for
third.
“We were able to cut some
cows that posed a challenge to
the mare and that allowed me
to ride her pretty strong,” said
Manion, who was seventh in the

12-horse second set. “I think she really
enjoys the competition. The more I ask
her the better she is, and the tougher
the cows, the better she is.”
Holly Is Smooth, bred and sold at
two by Manion, was reserve champion
of the 2010 Augusta Futurity under Brad
Mitchell for her new owner, and champion
of the 2011 Abilene Spectacular
with Matt Miller, for Manion, who had
purchased her back.
“She’s had some hard luck, but
she’s always been really good,” said
Manion, who scored 226 points on Holly
Is Smooth to win over $20,000 in the
2012 Bonanza Non-Pro Classic. Holly
Is Smooth has NCHA career earnings
of over $144,000.
Razor sharp
Elizabeth Queen, a four-times reserve
champion in Fort Worth, claimed her
first Fort Worth championship title on
6-year-old Razor, a gelding that she purchased
from her mother, Becky Elliott,
just before the Breeders Invitational.
“He’s real quick and my mother
struggled a little bit riding him,” said
Queen. “But I could tell that he had a
lot of potential.”
Becky Elliott purchased the red dun
gelding from Ginny and J.B. McLamb
before the 2010 NCHA Futurity and
showed him to place third in the 2011
Non-Pro Cutting. Skip Queen, Elizabeth’s
husband, also showed Razor to
place 11th in the 2011 Augusta Futurity,
but the Classic Challenge was just Elizabeth’s
second time to show the horse.
“My second cow didn’t want to turn
away,” Elizabeth said. “I was afraid that
I was not going to be able to hold her.
But (my horse) was on it and read her
quicker than I did a couple of times.
Skip really had him ready today.”
Six-year-old Lil Sting Rey, by Dual
Rey, placed sixth with Elizabeth in the
2012 NCHA Super Stakes Classic Non-
Pro.
“If I would have had to say which
one it would be, if I was going to win
it tonight, I probably would have said
(Lil Sting Rey),” said Queen. “But I just
didn’t get the cows for him.
“But both horses are quick and have
Skip’s style.”
Skip and Elizabeth also own Sister
CD, NCHA’s number one active all-time
leading money earner with $833,214.
“He’s done so much for us that we
really don’t have an agenda for him, as
long as he can pack Katherine around
for a long time,” said Elizabeth of the
10-year-old gelding, who the Queen’s
daughter Katherine showed as a finalist
in the NCHA Junior Youth Scholarship
Cutting finals last week.
Todd Quirk, champion this week
of the Classic Challenge Non-Pro Limited
with Cats In Ya Dreams, placed
sixth in the Non-Pro finals on Cats In
Ya Dreams, and tied for 12th place on
Spooked By A Cat.
