A Message From Haskell Jaycees
Last year the Haskell Jaycees ddoldcd increase their emphasis
on education. The initial step forward was voting the proceeds
from their carnival for n to be
to one Haskell County boy chiefly baaed on need.
Jaycees have found over-ru-n with
"These are not average cases," a for the Jaycees
said, "but persons with above average and ambition,
but below average financial
It Is beyond the nullity of the Haskell Jaycees to help nil
these even though they all need it and Jaycees do not
turn
a young man tell
self, and contribute the support his family, without wanting
help him."
The Haskell Jaycees would like take this
offer to the residents Haskell county agency
by which they can help further the education our youth.
"STRANGE INCONSISTENCE r
President Johnson recently signed the $1.1 billion aid to hla
bill, tunning it on example of "creative Federalism.,,
This event brought an Interesting comment from The Wall Street
Journal,
The paper said, "Yet that same Federalism s Impeding
possibly more significant developments of private enterprise In
the same area. Specifically, a private electric power company In
Appalachla Is ready to spend $910 million of Its own money on two
power projects. So far It Is being held back from spending a dime
by Congress and a Federal agency."
One project Involves a $210 million power plant on the Savannah
River, but Congress has not given the necessary approval.
The other project, in upper South Carolina, carries a $700 million
price tag and can be authorized by the Federal Power Commission.
But a number of rural electric cooperatives oppose it, and
FPC has not acted.
These tremendous developments would provide private,
heavily-taxe- d Investments totalling almost as much as the Appalachian
bill. Further, as The Journal points out, It is a rule
of thumb that for every dollar Invested to generate power In an
area, three more dollars are Invested by industlal customers
there. To quote the paper again. "Surely It is a strange inconsistency
when Federalism, .which can create nothing without first
taxing the rewards of private initiative. . .whoops it up for a
$1.1 billion handout while It lets creative business, with its own
sending program potentially three times as big, go begging."
GRADUATION TIME
Graduation time is here again. Armies of young people will
venture out into what they hope will be an exciting and receptive
world.
It will, for a certainty, be a world which is vastly different
from that their forebears knew. It is troubled, complex, and restive.
Its demands are enormous and implacable. Change takes
place at dizzying pace. The challenges are all but endless.
Yet, at the same time, it is a world of marvelous opportunity.
New frontiers are constantly being opened . in industry . busi-ens- s.
government medicine the physical sciences. In the
space of a few years, more material progress has been made
than in preceding centuries. And the future will bring more and
greater wonders . all the way from homes of virtually incredible
comfort and convenience to the landing of human 'beings on
the moon.
The world will welcome the young people who will soon
leave the schools and colleges. In return, it will ask much of
them. It will, often, require skills that didn't even exist a comparatively
short time ago. Above all, it will demand a willingness
to keep on learning. For formal education is a beginning,
and not an end in itself.
One more thing may be said. Surrounded as we are by material
abundance and achievement. It is easy to lose sight of the
old spiritual virtues. But, without them, the world is essentially
meaningly and empty. This is a truth that never changes. ..and
a truth that, one profoundly hopes, our young people will not
Special Seasonings
For Familiar Foods
Know No Season
Special seasonings for fnmll-I- nr
fowls know no Reason, reminds
Mrs. Gwcn Clyatt, Texas
A&M Extension consumer marketing
specialist.
Tliese seasonings can provide
year-rou- nd enjoyment. For example,
when frying chicken,
sprinkle the coated chicken
pieces with chopped chives or
onion and a little thyme and
rubbed sage Then cook as you
always do
If yon are preparing chops
for dinner, after browning,
sprinkle the chops with curry
powder Or, If you are not a
curry fan, sprinkle the frowned
chops with dill seed. Then
add a little water, cover nnd
cook until fork-tend- er.
When you have some fully
cooked ham to slice and you
want to serve it hot, you mny
want to try this mctliod : Spread
prepared mustard over the ham
slices cut a fourth to 38 inch
thick. Then sprinkle on brown
sugar generously. Broil the
mustard-brow- n sugar topped
ham slices until hot and the
topping bubbles.
If veal chops or steaks nre
on the menu, for a change you
may want to marinate them in
a well-season- ed French dressing
over beef steaks or lamb
chops before broiling. Tliese
and other special scasoners
know no season, the specialist
reminds.
roses and honeysuckle along the
of every hue.
There arc three levels to tile
A picnic area in the back yard
affords a broad view of the
the picnic area. The second
level is planted in box elder and
wild plum trees.
Three Pence roses reach
nearly to the eaves of a front
flowers and buds, so luxuriant
Program, Abilene
Jehovah's Witnesses' three-da- y
training program in Abilene
was concluded Sunday
when H. A. Fctzlk, district supervisor,
spoke on the subject,
"The Moral Breakdown What
Can Be Done About It?"
In speaking to the 450 persons
nsscmblcd, Fctzlk said,
"Today's indifference toward
Bblc principles is bringing
the Immoral conditions
mentioned by Paul in Second
Timothy 3:1-- 5, 'in the last days
critical times hard to deal with
will be here...' "
"Jesus aptly describes our
conditions ns, 'men become
fnlnt out of fenr and expectation
of things coming upon the
inhabited earth,' " Fctzlk said,
"but He also gave us a remedy
for the. moral breakdown when
he taught us to pray, 'Our Father
in heaven . Let your kingdom
come. Let your will take
place as in heaven, also upon
earth!"
Tlie circuit supervisor of the
meet, W. D.
Goff, speaWng on tlie subject,
"A People with a Purpose,"
said, "The very name Jehovah's
Witnesses mnkes it binding on
all dedicated and baptized Witnesses
to have a purpose in life
of bearing testimony to His
Name and kingdom."
The theme, "Willingly Fulfill
every other week.
Margie Seldcn, Mrs. Steel's
dnughtcr, lives next door to
the Steele's. Margie has two
very unusual trees in her yard.
A monkey and tulip tree. The
monkey tree has lacy fern like
folinge with bristles on the
truck and Hm,bs that feels so
much like fur, onp could close
their eyes and swear they were
stroking a furry, animal, It almost
gives one an eerie feeling,
so life-li- ke is the fur.
Tulip trees are" of the Poplar
family They often grow to a
height of 200 feet, in their native
habitat. The tulip tree requires
much moiBturc and a
rather acid soil. Compost can
supply the acid. There are
several rather large tulip trees
in Abilene. The pale gecn tulip
like blossoms, and the nearly
square folinge, makes these
trees very Jitjrajyve .
After sorghum has emerged,
spray Atrazine to control weeds
and grasses.
jKe idea is to spray Atrazine BOW Kertff-cid- e
right after sorghum has emerged, but
before weeds are 1 V2 inches high. This one
application, moved to the weed root zone
by rainfall, will control most annual broad-le- af
weeds and grasses in sorghum for the
entire season.
Control ofweeds and grasses in sorghum
with Atrazine can greatly reduce the need
for cultivating. And so your crop goes
through the entire season without weed
competition for moisture and soil nutrients.
The results of weed control in sorghum
are higher yields and lower production
costs . . . giving you more profit per acre.
So this year, use Atrazine for control of
weeds and grasses after sorghum has
emerged.
Lions viewed a film and
heard a talk on 'Operation
Mohole," Tuesday noon, which
revealed millions of dollars are
being spent on "off-shor- e"
drilling' for experimental purposes
In comparison to "Operation
Mohole," Dr J. G. Va lighter
and Dr Wm Kemp's drilling
is just about as costly Just
couldn t help but get this little
jibe in, but hope "No Pipe To- -
offense.
Just about the time the mechanical
department completed
printing last week s Free Press,
a big, shaggy dog made his way
into the building through the
back entrance He came by,
sniffing at the presses, stones,
type cases, etc Roger Weath-erfor- d,
printer, seemed happy
to see the dog, and gave the
critter a "first-han- d tour" of
the print shop Roger walked
over to the linotype machine
where Vance Abeldt was setting
type- - He explained the mechanism
of the machine to the
"soup hound." just as it were
a person The dog followed
Roger to the big press from
which the newspaper is printed.
The doggone dog was pretty
smart, as he never did seem
too interested in printing and
after looking the situation over,
he trotted out the back door,
and lay down in the cool shade
of the building The old adage,
"working like a dog," did not
hold true, as he stayed around
only a short while, seeming to
realize the printing industry was
too rough.
Since 'ole Prattler had another
a little reminiscing, and this
Who wrote it, and where it
came from. I cannot remember,
but it went something like
this:
The Jaycees annual Rice
Springs Roundup and rodeo officially
gets underway today.
Thursday, at 5 00 p. m , when
the all-west- parade will begin
winding its way through
the downtown section of Haskell
Immediately following the
parade at 630 p m., a big
barbecue, catered by Beth's AA
catering service, will be held at
the Corral building at the rodeo
grounds At p m sharp,
the rodeo will get underway, so
it appears that plenty of action
will be on "tap" for residents
of this area. Rodeo performances
will be held also on Friday
and Saturday nights, with
the pig scramble Contest as an
added attraction. Better head
for Haskell earlv today, to get
in on all the activities
The Jaycees have spent a lot
of time and money In staring
this year's rodeo, so let's show
our appreciation to the live-wi-re
younjr men by purchasing
rodeo tickets, even if you can't
attend. The new all-ste- el bucking
chutes and new lights cost
a "pot" of money, and Jaycees
will do good if they reak even
on this year's show So podner,
I'll see you at the rodeo.
Friday, May 31, will be "mop
and broom sale day" for members
of the Haskell Lions Club.
Both the downtown area and
residential section will be worked
during the day by Lions who
will be selling mops, brooms,
ironing board covers and pads,
brushes, rakes, dish towels and
many other useful household
Items, so when a "Lion" knocks
on your door, treat him kindly
Items of merchandise for
sale are made by the blind
workers in blind shops, or
Lighthouses in Texas, furnishing
them employment on a nonprofit
basis.
Money from the mop and
broom sale will not only .benefit
the Teaa Lighthouse for the
blind, but will also help support
local worthwhile projects
such as "Ooodfellows," which
