St. Raymond High School for Boys.
from the Parish Pastor
Dear Alumni and friends of St. Raymond High School for Boys,
May God’s blessings be with you as we journey through the holy season of Lent
and celebrate the new life and promise of Easter! I am pleased to announce to you
that the educational empire of St. Raymond is alive and well — not surviving but
thriving— here in the Parkchester/Castle Hill area of the Bronx. Our elementary
school has already completed its registration for the Fall of 2007 with nearly 700
students. Our girls academy will be moving into a completely renovated building
(on Metropolitan Avenue, formerly known as the Annex) with an enrollment of
nearly 400 young ladies. Our boys high school is completing its registration and
should open in September with close to 800 ‘Ravens’ in residence.
Plans are being formulated for renovating and expanding the physical plant—
especially with the possibility of new rooms for music and art. We have just contracted
for a new maintenance service to spruce up the building and to help us
begin some major capital improvements. Thanks to the efforts and interest of our
school principal, Brother Daniel Gardner, F.S.C., the tradition of the Golden Gloves
competiton has reappeared in the St. Raymond Gym.
Our tuition remains one of the lowest of the Catholic high schools. With your
support, 70% of our students receive financial assistance. St. Raymond High School
for Boys is a success story in so many ways and we are delighted that you continue
to be interested and wish to be a part of our sensational future. As always, you are
most welcome to visit— to walk the halls, say a prayer in our beautiful Chapel, reminisce
about the great basketball games in the Gym and speak with the many faculty
members who are part of the history of the school.
We thank you for your gifts to the school and most especially to the students
who understand that the education at St. Raymond will enable them to become
well educated Christian gentlemen. St. John Baptist de LaSalle, pray for us. Live Jesus
in our hearts, forever.
Sincerely,
Monsignor John Graham, Pastor

from the Principal
Dear Friend or Alumnus,
Greetings from St. Raymond High School for Boys! As our school community
moves into the holy season of Lent, we remember the three hallmarks of a Lasallian education — faith, service
and community. Throughout Lent, the faculty and students will remember the presence of God through daily
classroom prayer, Lenten prayer, reconciliation services, and the Stations of the Cross. Our students will continue
to support the efforts of Br. Dominic Jordan, a longtime faculty member at St. Ray’s, with a Lenten charity
drive to support his school in Kenya, Africa. And— the young Ravens will support one another through peer
tutoring, our senior mentoring program and a general sense of Raven Pride that has always been the strong
community experienced at St. Ray’s. So, pray that our school community might be properly prepared for the
celebration of Easter.
Our Middle States self-study year is moving along with steady resolve. The planning committee has reaffirmed
our mission statement and belief statements. They are now working with different constituent groups
to develop long range goals and concrete plans to achieve them. I would ask one of our most important
constituent groups, our alumni, to help us through this process by completing the alumni survey on our
school website. Log on to www.straymondhighschool.org and then click MSA Surveys on the left tool bar. This
ten minute survey is critical to our self-study, and your assistance in this process is appreciated.
The school is most gratified by the success of our senior class this year. 70% of the seniors are slated to receive
nyS Regents diplomas, and 100% are slated to receive local diplomas. Their college acceptances and
numerous scholarships and grants have been most impressive. Congratulations to the class of 2007, their parents,
teachers and guidance counselor on a job well done already!
The school will celebrate the achievements of our honor students on March 22 at Honors Night. There will
be 28 students inducted into the national Honor Society and over 150 students will receive Principal’s, First and
Second Honors in front of family and friends that night. Their academic success deserves congratulations.
There are many thank yous to extend in this newsletter. First, I would like to thank the Alumni Association
for sponsoring over $9,000 in Alumni Scholarships this year to our students. Many students would not be able
to attend St. Raymond without this monetary assistance. your strong support in coordinating and sponsoring
our Homecoming Basketball Game is also noteworthy. Four faculty members will also be honored for 25 years
of dedicated service at this year’s Wall of Fame Dinner— Mrs. Judith Carew, Mrs. Emily McDonough, Mr. John
Poli, and Mr. Andrew Sedia. I also would like to recognize Br. Frank Byrne, F.S.C. and Mrs. Phyllis Sobieralski,
both of whom were to be honored this year as well, but unfortunately can not attend the dinner. Many thanks
for all your zealous work on behalf of Lasallian education over these many years. I would also like to personally
thank Mr. Michael Norelli for his great service to St. Raymond— this year marks his 40th year of dedicated
teaching and administration. Wow!
I look forward to seeing all of you at the Wall of Fame Dinner. Br. Andrew O’Gara, F.S.C. and I will also recognize
the classes of 1967 and 1977 for their 40th and 30th graduation anniversaries. God bless you always.
Golden Gloves
the tradition returns
On February 9, a Parkchester tradition
was reborn. The Golden Gloves returned
to the St. Raymond Gym after a 20 year
absence.
The near capacity crowd enjoyed four
hours of amateur boxing in the spectacular
gym. St. Raymond partnered with
The Daily news to organize the event,
and the evening was a huge success.
A very special thank you to the Throggs
neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, who
graciously volunteered their services for
the evening. Members of the Ambulance
Corps include alumni John McArdle ’66,
Bill Heaney ’81, and Donald Thacke, father
of Kevin Thacke ‘90.
St. Raymond is seeking reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on
Education for strong educational programs and overall academic achievement.
Middle States is a voluntary, non-governmental, peer-based membership association
dedicated to educational excellence and improvement through peer evaluation
and accreditation.
St. Raymond is recognized for providing a quality educational experience
through a well executed curriculum that adheres to all Middle States standards.
This is attributed to its productive work environment, timely and open communication
and strong leadership. The school remains committed to the Commission’s
principles of cooperation, flexibility, openness, and responsiveness to
the needs of society and the education community.
During this school year the faculty and steering committee have compiled its
list of belief statements as they pertain to the goals for each student of St. Raymond.
The steering committee also reaffirmed the school’s mission statement. As
part of this year of self-evaluation, St. Raymond asks for feedback from the community.
Poetry slam adds a competitive element
to a traditional poetry reading. At a slam, five
judges each assign a score to original poems
performed without the aid of props, costumes,
or musical accompaniment.
This year more than 500 teens from new
york City competed in Russell Simmon’s Annual
Urban Word Teen Poetry Slam. Four
students from St. Raymond advanced to the
semi-final round — only one step from the
national level competition.
Congratulations to Christian Flores ’10,
Christopher Lee ’07, Brandon Morel ’08,
and Andrew Torres ’08 on their achievement.
Ms. Jeanine Valentino, the Poets Society
club moderator, stated, “This year’s club
had great enthusiasm. By participating in
this competition, members gain valuable experience.
They competed at the highest level
and I am so proud of them.”

St. Raymond was victorious with the return of the Golden Gloves tradition.
The national Honor Society is more than just an honor roll.
The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership
that are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in
the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
These criteria for selection form the foundation upon
which the organization and its activities are built.
Scholarship—Students who have a cumulative grade point
average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent
standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by
the local school’s Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement
for membership. These students are then eligible
for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.
Service—This quality is defined through the voluntary
contributions made by a student to the school or community,
done without compensation and with a positive, courteous,
and enthusiastic spirit.
Leadership—Student leaders are those who are resourceful,
good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea
contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive
attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be
drawn from school or community activities while working
with or for others.
and learn their way around the United
States stock market.
Pena, Morales and Tran have been invited
inducts 28 new members To The national honor Society
Character—A student of good character upholds principles
of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high
standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern,
and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and
clean lifestyle.
Citizenship—A student who demonstrates citizenship understands
the importance of civic involvement, has a high
regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates
mature participation and responsibility through involvement
with such activities as scouting, community organizations,
St. Raymond is pleased to announce
that 70% of the Class of ’07 will graduate
with a Regents Diploma—which
means that students pass five Regents
Exams. This accomplishment puts St.
Raymond near the top of all Archdiocesan
schools. Dr. Catherine Hickey, Superintendent
of Schools, has made special
mention of St. Raymond’s steady improvement
in recent years and Edward
Cardinal Egan has challenged schools to
graduate 80% with Regent’s diplomas
within two years.
Spearheaded by the St. Raymond faculty,
programs such as Math tutoring,
Regents study sessions, and writing
across the curriculum give St. Raymond
confidence that the school will exceed
the Cardinal’s challenge. Mrs. Judy Ca-
rew, Associate Principal for Academics,
stated “As a school we are proud of our
progress. In response to the heightened
standards presented by the new york
State Board of Regents, St. Raymond has
successfully adapted its curriculum and
will continue to do so.”
To assist in this effort, the school will be
seeking support to purchase 50 Graphing
BY Ian Begley
HE FORWARD is from Macedonia.
There’s a sweeper from Liberia.
Another defender used to call Kenya
home, and a midfielder grew up in
St. Lucia. At St. Raymond’s, soccer truly
is a global game.
With a roster that looks similar to the roll
call at last month’s UN General Assembly, the
Ravens have won their second straight CHSAA
Division B title. And the boys at St. Ray’s could
teach UN delegates a thing or two about how
to work together.
“A lot of people are from different backgrounds
and people think, ‘Oh, they won’t get
along because they’re from here, they’re from
there” said senior co-captain Michael Hernandez,
who hails from Honduras. “But everyone
here is of equal value.”
Added midfielder Cornelius Toe: “Everyone
here is from different countries . . .but I guess
soccer has brought us together.”
The Ravens finished the regular season 8-
2-2 (6-1-1, Division B South) under first year
coach Brother Richard Galvin. They open the
playoffs at Mount St. Michael today, and while
they seem to get along well enough, one thing
they can’t all agree on is how they actually got
there.
“Our offense has been best for us, we’ve been
effective, but at times we’ve been a little lax on
defense,” Galvin said.
Behind striker Senur Enimov (Macedonia),
the St. Ray’s offense has at times been explosive,
but sweeper Sylvester Inda (Kenya) believes the
defense will have to be effective if the Ravens plan
to make a postseason run.
“In the playoffs, defense wins championships,”
Inda said. “If you have the defense, offense will
come automatically.” One thing is for sure: if Enimov
is on, the Ravens are tough to beat.
The junior forward scored 23 goals in the reg-
ular season, and last week he and Toe were named
to the first-team All-CHSAA B Division Team.
All the scoring has made Enimov a marked
man in the CHSAA.
“Usually I hear coaches yelling, “Don’t leave
him out of your sight,’ ” Enimov said. “Some
coaches don’t know me at first, but once they see
that I have the ability to speed by people, they’ll
put another player on me or two or three.”
The Ravens roster is dominated by juniors
and sophomores, so Galvin wasn’t sure what
to expect when the team showed up for tryouts
in late August. “We lost six seniors from last year,
so I questioned, with the lack of experience, how
good we’d be,” Galvin said.
The players provided an early answer, win-
ning five of their first six games. But the big test
lies ahead in the playoffs, where the Ravens lost
to St. Peter’s in last year’s quarterfinals. Whether
they win or lose against Mount today, Galvin
knows the Ravens won’t leave the field with any
regrets.
“I expect us to play
well, I don’t see otherwise.”
Galvin said. “We’ve jelled
together well
throughout the year and
we’ve always played well
together.”
St. Ray’s forward
Senur Enimov has
lead the Ravens to
the playoffs.
neWS AbouT The Faculty
Celebrating
40 years at St. raymond
This June, Mr. Michael Norelli completes his 40th year of service at St. Raymond
High School. The various tasks assigned over that time were all trademarked with Mr.
norelli’s stamp—attending to detail and the conviction that “lovers of wisdom acquaint
themselves with a great many particulars.” (Heraclitus ).
In 1967, Mr. norelli began teaching English and Philosophy and he also took the
reins of the Forensics Team, which quickly became one of the powerhouses on the
high school circuit. One of his speakers, Kurtis Harris ‘74, won the national Championship.
(And, the team won the City Championship in 1978 and went on to place 6th
in the nation!) His afternoons were devoted to the myriad details of Forensics, guiding
students through the pitfalls and traps that are commonplace in debating, extemporary
speaking and oratory.
Early on, Mr. norelli hooked up with Mr. Ron Patnosh for a few memorable annual
activiites. They organized and ran a summer camp for 600 neighborhood children.
They also moderated the Talent Show, a Christmas staple at St. Raymond. Students would choose a faculty member whose mannerisms,
idiosyncrasies or sartorial preferences, they could impersonate. A few teachers would refuse the request but most agreed
since Mr. norelli and Mr. Patnosh supervised the coaching, censuring and condensing—including sleeping in the gym the night
before the show to get a running start on the activities. The presentation of humorous and clever spoofs of teachers was wildly
received and remembered fondly by students and faculty alike.
For the last twenty years, Mr. norelli has been an administrator in charge of scheduling classes and exams for teachers and students.
Mr. norelli is the proud father of two sons — Jason (who will graduate from Champlain College in June) and David (a sophomore
at Ramapo College).
St. Ray’s has been blessed the past 40 years with this able programmer, dedicated teacher and administrator—whose beliefs
include the importance of discovering the natural gift of each student and that education, not merely teaching, is a necessity not
a luxury.
Lastly, he is a man who is not afraid to let loose a huge guffaw when the occasion demands. There is no doubt that St. Raymond
is the fine school it is today thanks to the leadership and dedication exhibited by our own Mr. Michael norelli. Ad multos annos!
Mr. Rick Duncan ‘68 has been selected
as the 2006 -2007 LaSallian Educator of
the year. This annual award honors an
educator at St. Raymond who exemplifies
the ideals of St. John Baptist de La-
Salle today. The recipient must work to
foster gospel values in the lives of the
staff and students and must share in the
teaching mission of the Catholic Church.
Recently, seniors Stephen Maldonado
and Ricardo Resto wrote an article for
the school newspaper about Mr. Duncan
titled “A Father to Us All.” That phrase encapsulates
the devotion to students
demonstrated by Mr. Duncan daily. “St.
Raymond has played a very unique role
in my life. I don’t have children of my own,
10
Congratulations!
lasallian educator of the year
but through St. Raymond, God has bles-
sed me with over 750. It does not get any
better than that.”
To define LaSallian education, one need
not look any further than de LaSalle’s
writings. “You are engaged in a ministry
wherein you are obliged to touch hearts.
You cannot possibly do this without the assistance
of the Holy Spirit. Beseech God
to confer on you today the same grace as
he gave to the Apostles so that after filling
you with his Spirit for your own sanctification,
he may confer it on you for the salvation
of others also.” (Meditation 43:3)
de LaSalle urges us not only to concern
ourselves with the development of our
students’ minds, but also to “touch their
hearts.”
A LaSallian education
has everything
to do
with the integration
of the best of what is human with
the awareness that God has now become
part of that experience. This means the
LaSallian educator is willing to put their
time and energy, professional development,
and total selves at their students’
disposal. In a very real sense, the LaSallian
school, and therefore the Lasallian
educator, exist for the students, in order
to bring to completion the work that
God has already begun. Thank you Mr.
Rick Duncan!

joys however were his wife, children and medical practice.
Dr. Nick Daniello ‘66 at the school’s dedication of the September 11th memorial.
James Bluett ‘73 was a very popular Raven both as a student and alumnus. There has been an overwhelming
show of support in his memory, which was evident by the turnout of his classmates at the recent homecoming
game February 17.
Jack Bluett ‘98 and Lisa Bluett at the annual Homecoming game where the Class of ‘73 toasted Jim Bluett ‘73.
Juan Caro ‘78, Bronx born and raised, was a great athlete during his years at St. Raymond. He was selected to the school’s Sports
Hall of Fame.
Kevin Frazier ‘84 passed away in December of 2005. His sister Wyliette Frazier-Johnson is thankful for the many prayers and
The annual Homecoming Basketball game was played on Saturday, February 17. The more than 40 alums
from 19 different classes, with their families, were entertained to a highly spirited game between the Ravens
and the third ranked team in the nation, St. Anthony’s (new Jersey). Many of those who came back for
the first time were in awe of the great facilities. Thank you to the Alumni Association who sponsored
a great reception that gave all those in attendance the opportunity to share memories and reconnect to their old school.
A very special moment took place when members from the Class of ’73 offered a toast in honor of their friend and classmate,
Jim Bluett ’73, who recently passed away. The gesture was underscored by the arrival of Jim’s children, son Jack ’98 and daughter
