Program (a/k/a Department or Service Area: Section I: Abstract PROGRAM REVIEW, ALLOCATION AND INSTITUTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR EXCELLENCE (P.R.A.I.S.E.) REPORT PLANNING YEAR 2011-2012 (Budget Year 2012-2013) INSTRUCTIONAL AND NON-INSTRUCTIONAL DEPARTMENTS Over this past year the anthropology department has remained status quo due to the existing budget problems. We have neither gained nor lost course sections, however, we are in need of additional sections for students (as we are all well aware). One of our adjunct instructors is making steady progress on her Ph.D. The students in our Archaeology Field class are moving into a new section of the Summerwind Ranch site, an area which may reveal several of the semisubterranean type dwellings used by native southern California tribes. The students in our Archaeology Lab class continue to clean, sort, measure, and catalog the numerous artifact and ecofacts retrieved from our past excavations at 29 Palms, Oasis of Mara, and the Ostrich Ranch in Oro Grande. These will be ready for specialty analysis in the coming year. Both the lab and field are continuing work at the famed Calico Early Man site in Yermo. As a Research Associate of the San Bernardino County Museum, I have been entrusted to complete the archaeological survey of over nine hundred acres, and, thanks to the students in these classes (and former student volunteers) we have completed the work. During this effort, we discovered 12 new archaeology sites, which will add to, and hopefully help clarify the prehistoric activities in the Calico Region. Page 2 of 4
We are also in the process of bringing the Early Man site into the 21 st Century, modernizing some of the structures and utilities that have been in place since the early 1960s. We are attempting to bring the “park” back up to the Bureau of Land Management and Smithsonian Museum standards so that it can continue to receive visitors. We now have several former VVC students (presently finishing their undergraduate work and heading to graduate school) on the Board of Trustees to help ensure the success of the projects at hand. Goals for the coming year include: Finishing the sorting and cataloging of the archaeological materials recovered from 29 Palms Complete archaeological investigations of at least 2 of the newly discovered prehistoric sites at the Calico Early Man District Section II: Department Needs and Justification (include all items listed here on the budget worksheet) Our equipment for the Archaeology classes is sufficient for the present. We have enough shovels, trowels, buckets, etc. to last a while, but may need additional specimen bags and parts for our sifters in the near future. Our Cultural and Physical Anthropology lecture classes are fine for now as well. On the other hand, our Physical Anthropology lab and our Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology classes need new osteometric boards (the numbers on the older ones are wearing out, making it impossible to do measurements), and new skeletal materials (the real ones are also “wearing out”). Also, we need “regional” skull and tooth sets for comparative purposes to improve the quality of learning in these classes. We are asking for the money for all seven items on the list. We feel justified in the request because it is a “two-for-the-price-of-one” deal. These few fairly inexpensive items (totaling about $3000 with tax and shipping) are useful for both courses, and are also used in the other lecture classes. Page 3 of 4
