1968 Gressitt & Szent-Ivany: Bibliography of New Guinea entomology 3
Guinea —SW, NW, NE or SE (Papua), as indicated on the map.
References are included through 1966, although there are undoubtedly some recent articles
which have not come to our notice. A few have been added which were published
in 1967.
After each bibliographic entry is a brief annotation. For systematic items, this consists
of first the order, abbreviated, then the family, with the terminal " idae " dropped.
After the colon is a brief note on the content of the article. Where new species are described
in the article, they are as a rule named when less than 5 in number. If more
than 5, they are referred to merely as "several" or "many" new species. Genera are treated
in a similar manner. New generic and species names are asterisked (*). If there are
species other than new species, they are not listed as a rule, but are referred to as "recs"
for records, or as "spp." For non-systematic items, a general subject is indicated, such
as "Med. ent.", followed by a summary of the scope or geographical coverage in a few
words. The entries are indexed to order, family and/or general subject.
We make no claim to completeness with this bibliography. It is more of a working
tool for studies in progress, and must be added to in order to make it complete for any
one subject or group. Emphasis has been on systematic and faunal studies, and with recent
work in applied entomology. Over 6,140 references are included.
The Addenda list references which were overlooked at the time of starting to press.
Before the Addenda is appended a list of journal abbreviations used. The Index classifies
the entries by general subject or major taxonomic group.
Acknowledgments'. This work could not have materialized without extensive help from
many, for which we are very grateful. Among those who have given considerable time
to the project are Doris Anbe, Eileen Garrett, Carolyn Gressitt, Margaret Gressitt, Rebecca
Gressitt, Sylvia Gressitt, Y. Hirashima, Shirley Hokama, Violet Hokama, Dorothy
Hoxie, Yiau-Min Huang, Joyce Inoue, T. C. Maa, Carol N. Higa, Setsuko Nakata, J. Sedlacek,
W. A. Steffan, R. W. Strandtmann, Amy Suehiro, Maria Szent-Ivany, Clara N.
Uchida and C. M. Yoshimoto. We are also grateful to the authorities of the University
of Queensland (particularly F. A. Perkins), the Department of Agriculture, Stock and
Fisheries of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea, and Bishop Museum. The authorities
of the Australian Museum kindly made available the late Anthony Musgrave's uncompleted
card-file bibliography on New Guinea, which, though arranged on a different
basis, was helpful in checking entries. We are specially indebted to many of the current
workers on the Papuan fauna for kindly supplying us with lists of their publications dealing
with the area. Many of them have helped us with additional references or useful
information. Among those who have been very helpful are Drs C. P. Alexander, A. Diakonoff,
Delfa Guiglia, M. A. Lieftinck, C. N. Smithers, J. van der Vecht, Pierre Viette
and E. C. Zimmerman. Several librarians have given us particular aid, especially Ralph
Archbold, Librarian at the South Australian Museum in Adelaide, B. J. Clifton, Librarian
in Entomology at the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) in London, and Margaret Titcomb,
Librarian at Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Many of the references have been checked at
the Smithsonian Institution, the University of California, the Library of the Hawaiian
Sugar Planters Association Experiment Station, the California Academy of Sciences, the
British Museum (Nat. Hist), the University of Queensland, Museo Civico di Storia Naturale
"G. Doria" in Genova, the Australian Museum and the South Australian Museum.
