Teens need meningitis vaccination
(by Temily Wardlaw)
A shared snack
with a friend after
school, a shared kiss,
or a shared college
dorm all seem like
harmless activities,
right?
Wrong. These
activities are harmless
only for people who
have the right protection.
According to
the Department of
Health and Human Services,
between 1,000
and 2,600 people contract
meningococcal
(bacterial meningitis)
each year in the U.S.
Fifteen percent will
die despite treatment
with antibiotics.
Often deadly
to children and young
adults ages 2-24, meningitis
rears its ugly
head in many forms.
The most deadly form
is bacterial. Unlike vi-
ral meningitis, bacterial
can kill an otherwise
healthy teenager
within one day after
symptoms appear.
“One of the
most obvious symptoms
is a stiff neck,”
school nurse Bobbie
Hazen-Pope said. “If
you can’t make your
chin touch your chest
without tremendous
pain, you need to see a
doctor immediately!”
“Meningitis
is most deadly because
the symptoms
so closely relate to the
flu; therefore, patients
don’t receive proper
medical care,” Chris
Weddington, Nurse
Practitioner at West
Butler Family Center,
said.
M e n i n g i -
tis is an infection of
the fluid surrounding
the brain and spinal
cord. Proper medical
tests include a spinal
tap. If the fluid taken
from the spinal tap is
cloudy, bacterial meningitis
is present.
“Meningitis is
something not to be
taken lightly,” Weddington
said. “Teenagers
just don’t realize
how serious it is.”
Almost eight
years ago Wade Hampton
students learned
the seriousness of
meningitis when they
lost a classmate.
On the Friday
of the weekend when
tragedy struck, this
student spent her afternoon
in the nurse’s
office where she was
a regular visitor. On
Saturday at a friend’s
house, she complained
of a headache.
Sunday she
became ill and was
rushed to the emergency
room. There she
was told she had a bad
case of the flu. She
was given a few antibiotics
and sent home
to rest.
By Monday her
symptoms had worsened.
She returned to
the hospital where she
was finally admitted
with a confirmed case
of spinal meningitis.
Tuesday afternoon she
slipped into a deep
coma. Her mother had
until the end of the
week to decide what
to do. In the end her
mother decided it was
best to let her go.
Small steps can make big difference
Teens can go green
(by Jessica Mercier)
Ever since the
moment Twilight hit
theaters, vampires
soared in popularity.
Whether it’s The
Vampire Diaries, The
Vampire Academy, or
even the spoof Vampires
Suck, teenage
girls have been eager
to stick their fangs
into anything vampire
related.
But as every
fan knows, not all
vampires are good.
Often they create
problems we are unaware
of; and in terms
of the environment a
new villain is in town:
vampire chargers.
Vampire chargers
are electronic
chargers that suck up
energy as long as they
are plugged into an
outlet, even if your
device is not charging
or is fully charged. In
terms of eliminating
greenhouse gases, if
every American who
owned a cell-phone
unplugged their charger,
it would compare
to 80,000 cars being
taken off the road.
These chargers
aren’t the only thing to
worry about. In today’s
world, being environmentally
cautious is a
necessity to conserve
natural resources, preserve
plant and animal
species, and produce
energy efficient technology.
Many people
recycle, drive hybrid
cars, and use ecofriendly
technology
and appliances. Environmental
groups
such as The World
Wildlife Foundation
and The Arbor Day
Foundation gain new
supporters everyday,
with numbers ranging
up to five million.
H o w e v e r ,
many teenagers act as
if taking simple steps
to benefit the environment
is an inconvenience.
Why walk to
the recycling bin when
the trash can is closer?
Why donate money
to an environmental
group that benefits
someone else? Why
buy an eco-friendly
car when Hummers
are cool?
You don’t have
to be a tree hugger to
be environmentally
Little Pigs BBQ
@ Wade Hampton
friendly. Simple ways
to help the environment
include turning
off the light when
you leave a room. You
may not think much of
leaving the light on for
a few minutes while
you sneak downstairs
to get a bowl of ice
cream, but lighting accounts
for an average
of 11% of monthly
energy bills. The more
money spent on the
energy bill, the less
money for your ice
cream.
Another way
to help yourself while
helping the environment
is to use compost
in your garden rather
than store-bought fertilizer.
Nutrients from
scraps such as vegetable
peels, dead plants,
and egg shells serve
as an organic fertilizer
and improve the structure
and water-holding
capacity of your
garden.
“I use organic
compost for my
plants,” Sophomore
Carlee Steppe said. “It
is an easy way to recycle
without having to
go out of my way.”
save water
and money
is by taking
shorter
showers.
If your
shower has
a regular
s h o w e r -
head, when
you take
a 20 minute
shower
you are using 100 to
160 gallons of water.
You don’t need to
be in and out in three
minutes, but do you
really need to lather,
rinse, and repeat?
Speaking of
water, leaving it on
while brushing your
teeth wastes one to two
gallons of water every
minute. Take the extra
second to turn it off.
A filter for
your kitchen sink not
only reduces the use
of plastic bottles but
also saves you money
as Americans spend
$16 billion on water
bottles each year. If
you drink from plastic
bottles, the least you
can do is recycle them.
Eight out of ten plastic
bottles end up in landfills,
and numerous
Wade Hampton High
others end up as litter.
“I drink several
Gatorades a day
because I run,” Junior
Christian Miller said,
“but I save the bottles
and recycle them.”
When the
grocer asks, “Paper
or plastic?” choose
neither. Worldwide
people use almost one
million plastic grocery
bags every minute.
Because paper comes
from trees, paper bags
are not a great choice
either. Reusable grocery
bags are convenient
and store easily
in your car.
When you
leave a light on, drink
bottled water, or use
a plastic grocery bag,
ask yourself: is it really
that hard to go
green?
MENINGITIS
her death and had to
be put on antibiotic
Hazen-Pope
no one else had contracted
meningitis.”
The best protection
from menigitis
is vaccination.
“People tend to
ignore immunization,”
Weddington said, “but
they are put in place
for a reason and may
save your life.”
“Just don’t
WHHS, EHS rivalry more than three decades old
(by Katherine Howell)
In a rivalry
that spans 32 years,
Eastside and Wade
Hampton continue
raising the stakes to
raise money for local
charities. The ultimate
prize: winning
spirit
week, bragging
rights
for the rest
of the year,
and benefiting
people
in need. But
how did this
tradition between
fierce
rivals begin?
I n
1970, EHS
was built
to relieve
overcrowding
at WHHS. Neighborhoods
were split
based on proximity,
resulting in tension
that created the rivalry.
“WHHS had
always been rivals
with Greenville since
the schools were so
close to each other,”
1963 graduate Georgia
Cloer said. “It wasn’t
until the 70’s when
my children were in
school that the EHS
rivalry really started.”
It was 1978
and both schools were
concerned that the rivalry
had gotten out
of hand. Most of the
pranks were fun and
essentially harmless,
but some were extremely
destructive,
costing thousands to
repair.
Eagle students
once stole the Winn-
Dixie cow and put it
on WHHS’s cafeteria
building. Students
from WHHS hung
a chicken on EHS’s
flagpole as payback.
“The rivalry
had gotten really ugly,”
1978 EHS graduate
Billy Norman said.
“The schools were
trying to tame down
the students and even
talked about stopping
the football game
completely.”
That year the
student councils from
each school met to
discuss the vandalism.
Choosing to create a
spirit week leading up
to the football game,
they thought supporting
a charity would fill
the students’ need for
competition and result
in something profitable
for others.
“I’m glad they
channeled the frenzy
into something less
destructive,” Norman
said.
Along with
the student councils,
WHHS and EHS
principals Mr. Lloyd
Voyles and Mr. Brodie
Bricker provided assistance.
modest compared to
the $205,623.76 donated
“It is amazing
how much money
the schools raise these
days!” 1987 WHHS
graduate Elizabeth
“When I was in school,
we were very excited
Now you all raise ten
of popcorn samples.
The contamination
doesn’t stop there; 30
or more insect fragments
may be present
in one Snickers bar
and 225 insect fragments,
on average,
in a box of macaroni
noodles.
“I hate cockroaches,”
Kramer said.
“I am not alright with
finding a cockroach
or its fragments in my
food.”
Even some
foods as basic as peanut
butter and flour
have acceptable levels
of contaminants, 150
or more insect fragments
per 100 grams
of wheat flour and 30
or more insect fragments
per 100 grams
of peanut butter.
Maybe a peanut butter
sandwich isn’t the best
choice for lunch after
all.
“That’s pretty
nasty,” Senior AJ Henderson
said of these
acceptable contaminants.
“That stuff can’t
be alright to eat.”
According to
an Ohio University fact
sheet, people eat from
one to two pounds of
insects each year without
even knowing it.
“No, I don’t
think the FDA should
approve all of that
stuff,” Garner said.
“It’s unsanitary, and it
could make me sick.”
Even maggots
and fly eggs are
present in processed
foods.
“That is all
disgusting, but I don’t
really care,” Junior
Brian Cockman said.
“The food still tastes
good.”
A l t h o u g h
many students were
disgusted at these facts,
none of them said they
would change their
eating habits.
“I just love
food too much to stop
eating it,” Kramer
said.
Maybe having
that attitude isn’t so
bad. Insects and other
contaminants will not
harm people in small
doses and can also
provide a good source
of protein. So “what
you’re really eating”
really isn’t all that
bad.
leading up to the final
cut down of shooting.
“We learned
even more about all
the effort given in to
making a movie,” Junior
Alex Mikula said.
This project
has even inspired students
to become filmmakers.
“I used to make
films with my friends
in Germany and I
loved to do that,” German
exchange student
Although the
script will remain secret
Let’s
Be Honest...
The Bro
(by Megan Henry
& Logan Dowd)
Pink Polo?
Check. Khakis? Check.
New Costas? Check.
Boat shoes in every
shade of brown? Check.
Now you’re all bro’d
up.
This fits the
description of the “864
bro.” Just add a couple
“sick parties” that
you’ve been to and an
abundance of Facebook
pictures, and you could
be a true bro.
First off, it’s
not that important what
brand you’re wearing.
We don’t care what
shade of blue your new
Polo is in or what style
of Costas you have.
We love your
variety of colors, but
you really shouldn’t
look like an Easter egg
in the middle of autumn.
Use your bro-smarts and
dress appropriately for
the season.
We’re not just
dissing the Polo-bro.
All you ballers in headto-toe
Nike are just as
guilty.
When you’re
shopping, you shouldn’t
be thinking, “Will this
match my Air Maxes?”
And your
socks? My grandpa has
the same pair, minus the
“fresh” Nike swoosh.
If you call this
your swag, then you
might want to talk to
your fellow bros. You
wouldn’t want to be
stealing anyone else’s
swag, of course.
Yes, it’s true,
the ladies love your
style, but we’re more
concerned that you have
a colorful personality
than just a colorful
closet.
We understand
that you love your
friends, but you don’t
have to travel in a pack
like middle school girls
going to the bathroom.
It’s cute how
no matter what your
plans are for the weekend,
you’ll always end
up at a sleepover with
your bromance, gaming
all night long.
Now don’t get
us wrong, we respect
you for keeping up your
swag and we love that
you’ve got style, but the
bro-tude is what has got
to go.
So let’s be honest…you
need to bro
down and stop hating on
everyone else; you’re
not any better than they
are.
achieve this taste,
Brazilian chefs sizzle
their food to enhance
the food’s flavor.
comfort zone and try
something new, such
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows: Part 1
Book review: Swedish saga full of suspense
(by Stella Huey)
Stieg Larsson
illustrates an immoral,
sadistic, murderous,
and suicidal world
of Sweden in his
novel “The
Girl with the
Dragon Tattoo”
that is far from the
world most American
teenagers know.
The novel is
part of a detective trilogy
titled “The Millennium-Series.”
The
Swedish saga has sold
over 20 million copies
in 41 countries. In
2008, Larsson was the
second best selling author
in the world.
Larsson started
out as a UK journalist
primarily fighting
against racism before
becoming a world renowned
author. He
became an expert in
his field and even
gave lectures
on right
wing
e x -
tremism
at Scotland
Yard. A f t e r
20 years of experience,
Larsson founded a
group called the Expo-
Foundation to expose
neo-Nazi activity in
Sweden through his
work as a journalist.
L a r s s o n ’ s
knowledge on this
subject is evident
in his novel. The
original Swedish
title of the book
was “Men
who Hated
W o m -
en.” He
wrote
i n
depth descriptions
of
multiple types of
corruption in Sweden.
The main
character Carl Mikael
Blomkvish, no doubt
based on Larsson
himself, is a Swedish
journalist devoted
to exposing financial
corruption.
Blomkvish is
fighting a battle against
industrialist Hans-Erik
Wennerstrom. When
he loses a libel case
against Wennerstrom,
he is forced to take
a step back from the
journalism scene.
During his sabbatical,
he is offered a
job from Henrik Vanger,
a retired industrialist.
His cover job
is to write Vanger’s
family history, but
his actual mission is
to investigate a 30year-old
mystery; the
disappearance of Vanger’s
great niece Harriet
Vanger.
Blomkvish’s
partner Lisbeth Salander
is the girl with
the dragon tattoo. Salander
is the epitome
of hardcore awesome.
She is practically
straight out of a spy
cartoon and the ultimate
feminist.
The more
Blomkvish discovers
of the mystery,
the more Larsson’s
personal experience
is evident in the story.
Clearly, Larsson’s
knowledge of Swedish
business, sadistic
behavior, racism, and
Nazi politics is vast.
Some parts of the story
seem entirely too
detailed, but if you can
get past those parts the
climax can take your
breath away.
While “The
Millennium-Series”
will keep you asking
questions and trying
to guess ahead, it
never disappoints. It’s
worth a trip to your local
book store.
