VOYAGE UP THE HUALLAGA TO CMASUTA, AND<br />

THENCE TO JUAN GUERRA AND TARAPOTO<br />

On Tuesday, June 12, at 7.30 A.M., we left Yurimaguas<br />

for Chasuta, myself and goods occupying two<br />

ubadas (large dug-out canoes), one with nine, the<br />

other with eight Indians. <strong>The</strong> river had been<br />

sinking for some time, but for four days much<br />

rain had fallen and the river had risen again.<br />

When we started it was 8 feet below high-water<br />

mark.<br />

On the next day at 4.30 P.M. we reached the<br />

mouth of the Cainaiuche, up which there is a way to<br />
