1860.<br />

June 1 8- From this date to the i2th of September at El<br />

July- Limon, superintending the work of getting plants<br />

Aug.- and seeds of Cinchona sucdrlibra. <strong>The</strong> seeds<br />

Sept. 12. were all gathered under my eye, and were dried,<br />

sorted, and packed by myself. Partly on horseback,<br />

and partly dragging myself about on foot by<br />

the aid of a long staff, I explored pretty thoroughly<br />

the neighbourhood of our hut, and gathered<br />

(especially) numerous fine ferns and mosses.<br />

,, ,, Left El Limon and crossed over into the valley of<br />

Las Tablas.<br />

13. Over another ridge into the valley of San Antonio,<br />

to the farm of Tabacal, where I remained till the<br />

28th gathering seeds of Red Bark.<br />

GUAYAQUIL<br />

28. Started for Guayaquil, and travelled down the valley<br />

to Pozuelo.<br />

,, 29. From Pozuelo to Bodegas (on the river Guayaquil),<br />

where I remained till October 6.<br />

Oct. 6. Down the river (by steamer) to Guayaquil. From<br />

this date till November 24 at ; Guayaquil<br />

started up the country to meet<br />

down with the Bark plants.<br />

By steamer to Bodegas.<br />

In canoe up river Yentanas to Caturama.<br />

To Aguacatal, a cacao-farm above the village of<br />

Yentanas. Here I remained until December 24.<br />

putting together fifteen Ward's cases, preparing a<br />

raft to take them down to Guayaquil, and when<br />

then<br />

Mr. Cross arrived from the forest with the plants.<br />

superintending the work of transferring them to<br />

the cases, embarking the latter on the raft, etc.<br />

Dec. 24. Set out on our raft and this day reached a point<br />

a few miles above Caracol.<br />

25. Passed Caracol and Bodegas, and anchored in the<br />

river Guayaquil.<br />

,, 26. Down the river.<br />

,, 27. Reached Guayaquil at noon.<br />

31. Had the cases embarked on board the Pacific<br />

steamer for Panama and England.
