2. Medical Clearance<br />

Identified prisoners fill out a Physical Activity Questionnaire (PAR-Q).<br />

PAR-Q is designed to identify adults for whom physical activity might be<br />

inappropriate or those who should have medical advice before they<br />

engage in rigorous physical activities.<br />

A medical check-up is also arranged with prison medical staff.<br />

3. Interviews<br />

The last stage of the selection process involves an in-depth interview by<br />

Operation Challenge staff, in which the aims and content of the program<br />

are explained to the prospective participants. At the same time staff<br />

assess attitudes, abilities, aspirations and potential of the interviewee.<br />

The interview also establishes that the prisoner is now willing to<br />

participate in a program that will facilitate the accomplishment of<br />

personal and social development.<br />

4. Criteria<br />

Prisoners must be:<br />

• young offenders usually, incarcerated for the first time in an adult<br />

prison, targeting ages between 18 –27 years;<br />

• have a low security rating;<br />

• eligible for the next stage in their sentence plan at the end of the 17<br />

week program;<br />

• willing to abide by the rules of the program.<br />

5. Contract<br />

The program is voluntary and those selected sign a contract outlining the<br />

expectations of the Operation Challenge team.<br />

6. Program Structure<br />

Structured Day – normality to every day life reinforces a work ethic.<br />

A normal day in the life of Challenge would be.<br />

0530 wake-up call, by duty trainee (one trainee has this duty for one<br />

week in rotation, has to ensure people are on time and keeps a log<br />

book)<br />

0615 form-up on parade ground/ officer on duty (beds spaces are tidy,<br />

trainees stand at attention, duty trainee reports and team leader gives<br />

instructions)<br />

0630 commence morning fitness program (program is set for the<br />

duration can be run, circuit or confidence course)<br />

0830 formal inspection of person and bed space<br />

0830 work / education commences (according to set program, anger<br />

management / drug & alcohol abuse / cognitive skills / educational or<br />

vocational / 1st Aid / OHSW / fire training etc.<br />

1145 parade and lunch<br />

1230 re-commence work / education<br />

1615 afternoon fitness program (as per program, weights etc.)<br />
