Peaches—22 acres – the first crop will be harvested in December 1962.<br />

Sultana grapes—the first crop will be harvested in December 1962.<br />

Gordo grapes—4 tons harvested during 1961, main crop expected in<br />

December, 1962.<br />

Vegetable garden—24 acres – all types of vegetables produced.<br />

Lucerne—45 acres established.<br />

Pasture—20 acres established.<br />

Citrus—16.4 acres.<br />

Total area under irrigation, 174 acres.<br />

Dairy<br />

A stud Jersey herd is being established. Since the purchase of initial<br />

stock 13 heifer calves have been born. None of these have as yet<br />

produced progeny. The dairy has been the subject of very favourable<br />

comment from the Department of Agriculture, and visitors to the<br />

Centre. This is now a registered Stud bearing the name “WUKAIN<br />

JERSEY STUD” (WUKAIN is an aboriginal word meaning, “A Place<br />

of Training—To Teach”).<br />

Piggery<br />

The establishment of the piggery has been the most successful. On one<br />

occasion pigs sold at the Eudunda market received top price and on two<br />

occasions second price. The herd of breeding sows has been enlarged. It<br />

is anticipated that next year the piggery will produce at least 300 pigs for<br />

market.<br />

Poultry<br />

Houses have been erected (Dryden type). These will accommodate 400<br />

head of poultry.<br />

Hay<br />

Stacks of lucerne hay have been established. It is expected this season to<br />

cut and bale lucerne at least every six weeks. This fodder is conserved to<br />

allow for distribution to our other institutions in the event of a dry<br />

season.<br />

Pumping Station<br />

Two Thompson pumps were installed in the pump house for irrigation<br />

purposes. They are: (1) 180 h.p. capacity 200,000 gallons per hour. In<br />

addition, a pump of capacity 3,000 gallons per hour was installed for<br />

domestic water. The water supply is now adequate.<br />

Beautification and Wind Breaks<br />

Approximately 4,000 trees have been planted for beautification of area<br />

and wind breaks.<br />

Future Plans<br />

Approximately 30 acres of undeveloped land has been equipped with<br />

irrigation mains. This will be cleared and prepared for cultivation at<br />
