in the insurance sector: signifi cant growth in premium income was accom-<br />

panied by a further reduction in claims and management costs and continu-<br />

ing technological and organizational integration within the Group.<br />

In 2002 the Group achieved a premium income of over €6bn (up 22.7% com-<br />

pared with 2001), of which €3.7bn in Life business line (up 33.7% compared<br />

with 2001) and €2.3bn in Non-life business line (up 8.2% compared with<br />

2001). Market share (6.4% in 2001) increased. At the end of 2002, the Group<br />

was the fourth largest insurer in Italy, with a market share of 6.8%.<br />

in the banking and merchant banking sectors: this is a further develop-<br />

ment for <strong>Unipol</strong> with the opening of new branches and the acquisition of 60<br />

branches from the Capitalia Group. In addition, the Company has started its<br />

merchant banking activities.<br />

The expansion of the Bank retail operations was refl ected in increased<br />

turnover, with deposits at €2.2bn, double the fi gure for 2001 (€1.1bn). The<br />

strengthening of <strong>Unipol</strong> Banca is a signifi cant event in the overall strategy<br />

of the Group, both because it creates value within the specifi c sector and<br />

because it generates interesting cross-over between insurance and banking<br />

activities.<br />
