This year, the students and faculty of Saint 

Mary's Welcome their fieiV chap- 

Ittltl, Father Ron Jandernoa. Under his 

Spiritual guidance, we have grown 

closer to ourselves and to Christ.

classes in English, History, Calc, and Biology offer 

the challenge of college courses on the high 

school level. Students involved in the classes have the opportunity to earn three 

college credits for their work — The headache comes when students try to balance 

several A.P. classes as well as regular 

courses, sports, extracurricular activities, 

jobs, and a social life. According to senior 

Courtney Kierst, "A.P. is the power to succeed", 

while senior Jen Jancola says that 

"Anything that doesn't kill me will make 

me stronger." Whatever the opinion, 

everyone has lived through the year. Congratulations 

for all the hard work and dedication.

Senior Retreat was a 

great bonding experience 

for the Senior Class. 

The Seniors went to 

church, participated in 

activities, went on nature 

hikes and got to know 

each other better. Not only 

did the Seniors learn 

about each other but also 

how to respect one 

another. 

Although the food was 

not the most spectacular, 

Sister's prayers for Pizza 

Hut made it better. 

Throughout the three 

days and two nights, the 

Seniors were extremely 

exhausted from the lack of 

sleep but the retreat gave 

everyone a needed 

break from jobs and 

school. 

Overall the retreat was a F

great experience for 

the students. Friendships 

grew stronger and hatred 

faded away. It was one 

week that will be put into

through which psychology 

gathers it's 

information. One of 

these methods is hypnosis.

This year as part of our studies, the psychology 

students invited a hypnotist to 

come and explain hypnosis, answer questions, 

and 

perform demonstrations. The 

hypnotist, Flavian, arrived on 

Thursday, January 9,1997. All 

seniors were invited to attend. 

"Flavian" has performed at 

many local and Catholic high 

schools for the past several 

years. While hypnotism has 

been around 

for many years, it Still You ' re getting verrrrry sleepy... 

arouses some suspicion 

along with interest. That is why permission slips 

were necessary to attend the demonstration. 

Flavian asked for volunteers from the audience. 

Demonstrations in moon talk, hot seats, 

alien in the hand, and fake money thrilled the 

crowd who was "glued" to their seats. Juniors 

will have something to look forward to next 

year with "Journey to the Center of Your 

Mind".

patience for all with a combination of 

limited parking, twenty or more accidents, 

hundreds of dollars in parking

own and the ability to gain newfound 

freedom totally outweighs all of the pains of driving.

College on the Horizon 

From Freshman year to Senior year students take 

college prep courses, with the hope of getting into a 

good school. As junior year ends and senior year 

approaches there tends to be a lot to do. 

Applications have to be filled out, essays have to be 

written, and letters of recommendation have to be 

done. Students go to open house, and recruiters 

come to school. From September to January it is 

rush, rush, rush.

which included poets such as Gwendolyn 

Brooks, Robert Creely, and Robert Hass. Mr. Nappen 

and Mrs. Kierst, along with Kristy Durski, 

Allen Cruz, Jaci Talnagi, Anne Margaret Mannion, 

Liz Novak, Joanna Dyke and Allison Martinovych 

went to Waterloo Village in Stanhope, New Jersey 

where they took part in one of the biggest poetry 

festivals in the area.

At 10:00, the lights went out and the music 

pumped through the DJ's speakers. 

That's when the fun began. Unlimited 

bowling was a plus along with various 

prizes given to the participants throughout 

the night. For some, it was a chance to see 

who could break the highest score. It was no 

big surprise when Scott Lesinski won 

first place with a score of 210 and Kert 

Werner won second place with a 

score of 209. Scott received a $100 gift certificate 

and Kert received a $50 gift certificate 

to the Sports Authority. Congratulations 

guys!

hard to uncover the latest news 

traveling throughout the school. It 

is a very challenging experience 

for the staff, and from that challenge 

they receive valuable

The yearbook staff, under the direction of Mrs. Panigrosso and Editor, 

Nicole Kasper, worked extremely hard 

as well. Everything seemed overwhelming 

at first, but as time went on everything 

fell nicely into place. The production 

of the yearbook was Excellent and 

everyone had a really good time. We 

hope you enjoy Sceptre 1997. Lastly, we 

would like to say thank you to Mrs. Panigrosso 

for all of her dedication and hard

Junior Ring Day Breaks Tradition 

The highlight of Junior year is receiving 

the St. Mary Regional High School 

ring. This year, Junior Ring Day was celebrated 

on October 10. A break in tradition 

placed the occasion on a Thursday 

night, instead of during the day. 

Family, friends, students and faculty 

gathered together in the church for mass 

and blessing of the rings. During meditation, 

the Juniors presented blue and gold 

carnations to a family member to show their 

appreciation. 

After mass the students and their families assembled in the 

gym for the presentation of the class rings. Lee Valenty, Class 

President, along with Mrs. Woolf and Mr. Gloss called each 

proud Junior one by one to receive their ring. The rings each 

had unique designs since the students were permitted to personalize 

their rings with symbols, textures, and various stones, 

however, the St. Mary Regional High School title and the class 

of 1998 were proudly displayed on each. 

The ceremony was a beautiful remembrance of a special 

day. The Senior Class Senate, as well as the parents and other 

members of the Senior Class, decorated the cafeteria beautifully 

and helped with refreshments.

The 1996 Christmas 

Ball was an affair to 

remember. The theme "Wonderful 

Tonight" was a realistic title for an 

evening of 

sparkle, 

romance, 

music and fun. 

There were 

over 325 people 

at the Ball most of whom crowded the dance 

floor all evening. Teachers were even dancing to the 

"Majik Music." Memories were well preserved by 

both students and professional photographers who 

flashed away all evening. Girls were dazzling in 

their dresses while the guys sparkled.

A Winning Season 

The 1996 Boys Cross Country team had their 5th 

straight winning season. Led by the team, co captain, 

MVP, and all division runner, Joe Majikowski, the 

team compiled a record of 9 wins and 6 losses. The 

team also received strong outings from senior co-captain, 

Keith Woznica, who provided leadership and 

motivation. The future looks bright for the Cross 

Country team who had 6 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 6 

freshman who will return in '97.

started off well by only losing two 

players from last year's team. The 

team worked hard over the summer

record and third place finish in the 

Gold Division. The team is led by 

second year coach Joe Lewis. Their 

outlook for the season is first place 

in the Gold Division and to 

improve on their one win in the 

County Tournament last year.

The 1996-97 St. Mary Eagle wrestling season was a lot of hard 

work and determination. This year's team was made up of 

mostly first and second year wrestlers. The Eagles saw strong 

returns from senior captains Art Hilman (4th year), John 

Solakov (3rd year) and Keith Woznica. The Eagles are still a very 

young wresting team, but with the proper motivation, determination, 

and hard work they can gain what it takes to be the best 

and we can expect the Eagles to soar in the future.

Fourth 

Season 

Coach Robert Lozzi has been 

coaching the Eagle wrestling team 

for the past four seasons. Mr. Lozzi 

is a former wrestler and graduate 

of St. Mary's and a former teacher. 

He is now a teacher in Old Bridge 

High School but he still coaches the 

wrestlers and the Lady Eagle soccer 

team. He has put a lot into St. 

Mary's wrestling program. Thanks 

to him, the wrestlers have gotten 

new singlets, new headgear and 

new warm-ups for the team. He 

has also helped to get new weight 

equipment in St. Mary's, not to 

mention the renovation to the 

wrestling room.

The 1997 Bowling Teams from 

St. Mary Regional lit up the 

Alleys at Hill Lanes with their 

great new uniform shirts. This 

year the teams were a fire with 

new spirit and enthusiasm. The

sport that's played in all weather, something 

that brings out the best in all of us, that's football!

a long established history of football teams,

year, 1997. St. Mary Regional 

High School finally has a
