This is Yale
History
Yale University, founded in 1701, is the third oldest
college in the United States and one of the foremost research
universities in the world. First known as the Collegiate
School, it changed its name in 1718 to honor
benefactor Elihu Yale.
Students
Since its first class, which had only one pupil,
Yale has expanded into a university with 5,100 undergraduates
and 11 graduate and professional
schools with roughly 5,200 students. Women were
admitted to graduate schools in 1892 and to the
undergraduate college in 1969. Today they make
up about 50 percent of the enrollment. Students
come from all 50 states and over 60 countries.
Faculty
The Yale faculty includes more than 2,000
scholars, many of whom are internationally respected
authorities in their fields. Fourteen Nobel
Prize winners have been associated with Yale.
Classes
There are approximately 1,900 courses and
75 majors or programs of study, including 35
different languages.
Admissions
In selecting a class of 1,300 from approximately
18,000 applicants, the Admissions
Committee looks for strong academic ability
and achievement combined with personal
characteristics such as motivation, curiosity,
energy, and leadership ability. Academic
strength is indicated by grades, rigor of curriculum,
standardized test scores, and evaluations
by two teachers and a college counselor.
Yale requires results of the College Board
Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT or SAT 1)
and any three SAT II: Subject Tests or the
American College Testing (ACT) Assessment.
Yale will also accept the Common Application.
In addition, students whose native language
is not English must submit results of the Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Athletics
With 35 varsity sports teams and a large
intramural program, sports have a prominent
place at Yale. The University offers more than
500 acres of playing fields and nine-story
Payne Whitney Gym, one of the largest athletic
structures in the world. No university
takes greater pride in its athletic heritage.
No fewer than 148 athletes have competed
in the Olympics. Together they have brought
home 88 medals - more than most nations
- including 49 gold, 15 silver and 24 bronze.
Financial Aid
It is Yale’s policy to admit all students
on the basis of academic and personal
promise without regard to their financial
circumstances. In addition, the
University is committed to meeting
the full need of all admitted students
by providing them with appropriate
financial aid awards. This “needblind”
admissions policy applies
to all applicants including international
citizens. Currently, approximately
45 percent of all
Yale students receive financial
assistance through loans,
scholarships and work-study
employment. For more information,
call the Yale Financial
Aid Office at 203-432-
0360.
Residential Life
All incoming students are
assigned to one of 12 residential
colleges before they
arrive freshman year. All
freshmen and sophomores
are required to live on campus.
Each residential college
has its own dining
hall, as well as library,
computers, TV and game
rooms, and often theaters,
weight rooms, and
music practice rooms.
The residential colleges
sponsor numerous academic
and extracurricular
programs, including
musical performances,
dramatic productions,
intramural sports
teams, visiting fellowships
and academic
seminars. A resident
master and dean take
care of the academic
and administrative
needs of each college,
and faculty “fellows”
participate in
the community by
acting as student
advisors and eating
in the college’s dining
hall.

Coming off a fantastic finish to the 2003 campaign – the Bulldogs
went 25-9 in their final 34 games – head coach Andy Van Etten is
excited for the start of the 2004 season. With 11 letterwinners returning
and a strong freshman class, the Bulldogs appear poised to challenge
for the Ivy League title.
Strong pitching and defense have been the trademark of Van Etten’s
teams, and this year should be no different. Sophomores Beth Pavlicek
and Peggy Hunt lead one of the deepest pitching staffs in the league.
Each had 10 wins in their rookie campaign and combined to pitch
over two-thirds of Yale’s innings. Fellow sophomore Ashley
Linnenbank and team captain Jillian Miles accounted for the remainder
of the Bulldogs’ innings last spring. Linnenbank had five
complete games and a 2.88 earned run average, while Miles has been
in the Yale rotation since her freshman year. Two newcomers bolster
the Eli pitching corps. Theresa Liedlich (Las Vegas, NV) and Jessica
Meyer (Pembroke Pines, FL) were both all-state selections in
high school and hope to make an impact.
Junior Kristy Kwiatkowski, a two-time second team All-Ivy selection,
returns at catcher for the Bulldogs. In 2003, Kwiatkowski
threw out 15 baserunners and was tied for the team lead in home runs
with three. Freshman Niki Haab (Sarasota, FL) also looks to see time behind the plate this season.
Despite losing star third baseman Jesseka Bartholomew to graduation, the Elis return a number of infield
standouts. Leah Kelley, a first team All-Ivy selection, returns for her senior season at shortstop. Kelley had
career highs in 2003 in virtually every offensive category and led the Bulldogs in stolen bases with 21. Newcomer
Kate Meserve (Ticonderoga, NY) also will see some time at shortstop and as a utility position player.
Chelsea Kanyer started all but three games of her freshman campaign at first base and hit .287 for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Emily Lederer started 35 games at second base last spring and could see time at third base as well
this season. Senior Rina Brannen missed most of last season with an injury but returns this spring. Freshmen
Meredith Parks (Mission Viejo, CA) and Christina Guerland (Auburn, CA) are also candidates to earn playing
time in the infield.
Britni Fabacher started in centerfield last year and was one of only three Elis to play in every game. She had
career highs in hits (39), doubles (6), triples (5) and RBI (14). Senior Katharine Shiota, who hit her first career
home run last season, and junior Libby Peters are candidates to earn playing time as well. Sophomore Amy
Seese rejoins the team after taking last year off.
WILLIAM O. DEWITT ‘63 FAMILY FIELD
The William O. DeWitt ‘63
Family Field is the home of
Yale softball. The 350-seat
stadium designed by architect
Brian A. Ameche, AIA ’75 of
New Haven and built by Clark
Construction Company of
Delhi, N.Y., is set against a
wooded hillside which serves
as a natural wind screen and
at the same time provides for
a magnificent backdrop for the
stadium. The professional quality
infield balances drainage concerns
with the need for excellent
playing conditions.
The field dimensions are
200 feet to the corners and 220
to the tree lined fence in dead
center field. Spectators can
also enjoy the game sitting atop a berm high above the right field fence line. Concrete sunken dugouts sit underneath the
stands and twin bullpens stretch along the base lines. Located behind the third base Yale dugout are two fully-enclosed
batting cages equipped for use with a pitching machine. Perched overlooking the backstop fence is a fully-enclosed press
box. Adjacent to the stadium is a new 750-seat artificial turf stadium, the new home of Yale field hockey and lacrosse.
The Brooks-Dwyer Varsity Weight Room
occupies 7,000 square feet on the fourth
floor of Payne Whitney Gymnasium. It resides
within the 21,000-square-foot Adrian
C. Israel Fitness Center in a space originally
occupied by racquetball/squash courts
and a golf practice room. This facility was
dedicated in May 1999 as part of a capital
project undertaken to expand and modernize
this 70-year-old cathedral of sports. The varsity
weight room serves each of the
University’s intercollegiate sports programs
and is equipped with rugged, versatile equipment
such that groups of up to 70 studentathletes
can train concurrently with optimal
effectiveness and efficiency. The Brooks-
Dwyer Varsity Weight Room was created in
memory of Charles W. Brooks ’35 and Martin
Dwyer, Jr. ’44 through the generosity of
Michael C. Brooks ’67 and Diana Dwyer
Brooks ’72. Workouts are designed and supervised
Athletics Mission
Yale University offers its students a liberal education, one
which has as its focus on the intellectual and moral development
of the individual, and which gives students a foundation
for learning throughout their lives. Yale has long recognized
that such an education is not fostered by its academic
component alone. Part of it is constituted by those
challenging and pleasurable experiences and extracurricular
activities—like varsity and recreational athletics—that
augment and enrich academic training.
In athletics, as everywhere else in the University, Yale is
strongly committed to equal opportunity, and affirmatively
seeks to attract exceptionally qualified students, coaches
and staff of diverse backgrounds to its ranks.
As a part of its great athletic tradition, the University sponsors
35 varsity teams, with broad opportunities for participation
by men and women, in which athletes of proven ability
have the opportunity to test their skill and valor in intercollegiate
competition. Through its commitment to competitive
athletics, Yale demonstrates its belief that the lessons such
engagement teaches are many and enduring. Among these
are learning how to strive to win, to compete with pride and
honor, to make sacrifices, to persevere when all seems lost,
and to develop a sense of obligation and responsibility to
others. These lessons make athletics a school for accomplishment
and character, and for the athlete they represent
an invaluable part of the non-academic aspects of a liberal
education.
Because Yale views athletics as a component of liberal
education, complimentary to its central academic mission
but not superior to it, the University requires that aspiration
and achievement in competitive athletic endeavor play a pro-
portioned role within any student’s school life. The University
also subscribes to the Ivy agreement, the principles of
which delimit the role competitive athletic endeavor plays in
the life of the University or of any individual student within it.
These principles include the belief that student athletes
should be generally representative of their class and admitted
on the basis of academic promise and personal qualities
as well as athletic abilities; that financial aid to student
athletes be awarded in the same way it is awarded to other
students, that is solely on the basis of financial need; that
student athletes be held accountable to the same academic
standards as other students; and that athletes make normal
academic progress toward their degrees.
In addition to its sponsorship of competitive sports, Yale
supports a wide range of extracurricular programs, including
those that present significant opportunities for recreational
and instructional participation. The University provides
supervision for over thirty club sports, and has developed
a large intramural program, which presents undergraduates,
graduate students, and faculty fellows with the
opportunity to participate in competitive sports throughout
the calendar year. Yale considers the opportunities it offers
in these areas to be an important contribution to the wellbeing
of members of its community and is as dedicated to
these extracurricular activities as to the continued strength
of its competitive programs. In all aspects of sport and recreation,
the University recognizes that shared experience
can help create a strong bond among members of the University
community, and between the University community
and the wider world, and it is committed to fostering the spirit
