The New School Prayer"
(This was written by a teen in
Bagdad, Arizona.)
Now, I sit me down in school, (
where praying is against the rule,1
for this great nation- - under God,
finds mention of Him very odd. If
scripture now the class recites. It
violates the Bill of Rights, and anytime
my head I bow. Our hair can be
purple, orange or green, that's no
offense; it's a freedom scene. The
law is specific, the law is precise
prayers spoken aloud are a serious
vice. Bar praying in a public hall,
might offend someone with no faith
at all. In silence alone, we must
meditate. God's name is prohibited
About Uchenna and Joyce
Uchenna & Joyce are a married
Team from Houston, Texas,
who were going through an
extremely challenging period in
their lives. Both worked for
now-bankru- pt
companies that experienced
highly publicized accounting
scandals: Uchenna worked for
Enron and Joyce worked for
WorldCom. Uchenna and Joyce's
primary motivation for participating
in the Race is to regain some
of the closeness they've lost during
these tryii.g times.
Uchenna grew up in Los
Angeles and now works as an
energy broker in Houston.
Uchenna and his wife have been
through some challenging financial
and emotional times s of
late. After several failed atfffrnpts
in-vit- ro
fertilization, but it was
unsuccessful. Uchenna describes
himself as competitive and extroverted,
and he enjoys basketball
scuba diving and horseback
Joyce was born in Mississippi
and raised in San Diego,
Black women's Health disparities put community at risk
A Black Prois Exclusive
By Klmafn Price
A recent episode of the
long-runni- ng television series
"ER" included a story line
about an African --American
woman diagnosed with
advanced breast cancer that was
spreading to her bones. It was
not the cancer that brought the
woman to the hospital, she had
injured herself falling down the
stairs. The doctors happened to
find the canfier while treating
her injuries from the fall.
The woman admitted that
she hd felt the Sump in her
breast two years earlier, but had
not gone to the doctor She
lacked health insurance, was
distrustful of the health care
system and didn't feel that sick.
Even after being diagnosed, she
initially refused treatment
because of the time and money
it would require.
While this story is fictional,
the situation is very real for
many
African-America- n
women. It's often said that we
are the glue that holds our communities
together. If that's true,
then our communities may be in
LAGO VISTA, Texas - Neil
Greene's memories of youth begin
at the tender age of 2, and the amazing
detail and humor that flavor his
poignant life story leap vith an
energy all their own from the pages
of his new memoir, Tlie Badgertots
(now available through
AuthorHouse).
Greene begins with a com
pelling account of the nomadic life
he knew with his biological family
before the age of 3. During the late
1930s, the Depression had plunged
most families into dark days, but
Greene's stories of childhood brim
with matter-of-fa-ct wit and grace.
The things he did without, the
unspoken etiquette of the time and
the harsh reality of daily survival
are expressed with the tenderness of
one who has taken each life lesson
to heart. In addition, lightheaded
tales of giant tumbleweeds that
Sometimes knocked an unsuspecting
toddler off his feet and dust
storms so dark they fooled the
chickens into roosting too early
entertain readers of all ages.
M The Badgertots also details
what it was like for foster children,
as Greene shares how "the County"
took him from his mother after his
father left home. Separated from his
"real mom" and his siblings, he
lived with three different families,
and Tlie Badgertots follows his
experiences with each one. As readers
trace the life of a young boy
who constantly suffers from the
threat of abandonment, they discover
both the importance of stability
in a child's life and the resilience of
the human spirit at any age.
Poetry ends The Badgertots
with Greene's seasoned perspective
on a range of topics, including a
stirring tribute to all who have
May 8-- 14 is National
Womon's Health Care Weak,
which reminds us to slop and
think about our health. On nearly
overy indicator, African-Amorica- n
women have poorer
health than white women. We
arc not getting the care we
need, and our health is suffering.
Black women on average
die five yearrf sooner than white
women Over half of us between
the ages of 45 and 64 have been
diagnosed with high blood
pressure, twice the rate for
white women of the same age
We're also twice as likely as
white women to have diabetes.
HIVAIDS has reached epidemic
proportions in the
African-America- n community,
and our women are among the
hardest' hit. Black women
account for more than
two-thir- ds
of all new AIDS cases,
and HIV is the leading cause of
death for young black women.
We are less likely than
while women to get breast cancer,
but more likely to die from
it. Black women are also more
likely than white women to die
"Thanks to Our War Veterans."
"This s written for readers of
all ages," he writes. "It isn't politically
correct. It is written in a vernacular
you can understand." It is
se candor and well-earne- d
wisdom that makes Tlie
Badgerjots so endearing to all read
ers.
Although he endured several
transitions from one family to
another, Greene writes that the loving
acceptance he received from his
"borrowed" parents helped him to
overcome the cruel treatment o f
others toward foster children. His
poetry has been featured in several
publications, but Tlie Badgertots is
his first book.
THANKS FOR RUNNING
FOR MAYOR! THIS N THAT
wants a very good friend, VAN
ASHLEY, who is serving as
Mayor Pro Tern of the City of
Littlefield, to know we want to
thank him for standing tall and
seeking the Mayor's Post of
Littlefield. No doubt about it ... it
isn't easy to stand up for something
you truly believe in and get
the necessary support you need to
accomplish your fete. But despite
the odds against being elected as
this town's first Black Mayor, he
stood tall and believed he could
REALLY MAKE A DIFFER-
ENCE it he was elected. With a
of nearly 20 YEARS as a
ally councilman, it's hard to
bgljeve he was not elected, as he
h,ad more experience than any of
the-othe- r two persons seeking the
Office - including one who has
served as mayor in past years.
Now who has the knowledge of
knowing what is best for this town
than our friend VAN ASHLEY,
who is always talking about the
good things happening in
Littlefield, Texas. THIS N THAT
still believes that if those in attendance
of the banquet for Mr.
Ashley would have taken JUST
ONE PERSON to the voting polls
either during early voting or on
election day, VAN ASHLEY
would have been elected, or in the
upcoming run-o- ff election in
June. He only received 19 OF
THE VOTES, and there were
only approximately 800 votes
made in this race. Just think... if
only those who really believed in
VAN ASHLEY would have
showed up, things could have
Congratulations for
long service!
Dear Eddie:
I am very happy to congratulate
you, TJ. Patterson and the
Southwest Digest newspaper for
28 years of service to the Lubbock
community. Your commitment to
providing quality news and information
to Black readers in Texas
is in the best tradition of the Black
Press.
Since 1827, the Black Press
has had two goals: Eliminate
racism and discrimination and
celebrate Black culture and
achievement. While some people
today question the viability of the
Black Press, it is clear to people
like you and I that our people
heed a vigilant Black Press today
rijore than ever.
Our uncompromising quest
for liberty as a people will only be
'
promoted in a strong Black Press.
Jljo other can tell that story as
(Completely - or as eloquently. And
we must continue to serve readers
with uplifting information that
promotes the best of Black culture
-- n$ws and information that lifts us
up. as a people, not tears us' down.
It is a pleasure to honor a fellow
warrior in the struggle for
true liberation. I appreciate you, I
calibrate you and I congratulate
you.
fn the struggle,
of them only know how to deal
with the problems of life as a result
of what they have learned from the
Parents are so busy trying to
eke out a livelihood for their families
until they do not have the time
to teach their children about the
'birds and the bees.' The lack of
knowledge about many things put
our youth in harm's way much too
often, because we do not have time
to talk to them and help them to be
It appears that some colleges
and high schools as well,' feel that
if they throw out a dozen or so
will solve all of their problems.
Morality has no place in the
upbringing of our youth. Our
youth needs to know all of the pros
and cons of what to do with condoms.
We can still tell our youth
about abstinence, the morality
issues of marriage, and the risk of
protected and unprotected casual
sexual activities which cannot protect
them from HP and AIDS. We
need to get 'in cinque' and talk to
our youth. Help them to communicate
and relate in order to rescue
them from the pitfalls of this fast
moving society. Let us not have
them rely on their peers for the
knowledge they need. Give it to
