2011 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
Women’s Final
Sarolta Kovacs (HUN) has capped a memorable year by defending her Junior
World Championships title in front of a large crowd at Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Kovacs used all her experience to out shoot and out run the winner of the
fencing Alise Fakhrutdinova (RUS) and Freyja Prentice (GBR) who had to
settle for silver and bronze respectively in the combined event.
Kovacs had a solid start to the day finishing 5th in the fencing behind silver
medallist Fakhrutdinova. A typically strong swim by the Hungarian and then
only 2 rails down in the ride meant the 21 year old started 1 second behind
Fakhrutdinova in the Combined Event. Kovacs shot brilliantly to overtake the
Russian in the 1st shoot and never looked back to repeat her performance of a
year ago and become the Junior World Champion.
Kovacs, who also won the silver
medal at this year‟s Senior World Championships stated: “I am
very happy about this second junior world title which came in such
a hard competition with strong opponents focused on winning the
medals. This was my hardest season ever and this is the best end
possible.”
The fencing superstar Fakhrutdinova: “I am so happy as it's my
most important result at international level. The key to this medal
was my fencing performance, which gave me a big lead on my
opponents. I also
produced my best
combined event performance today which I am thrilled about.”
Prentice who added a bronze to her silver medal last year: “I
thought I lost my chance for a medal with a nightmare second
shoot. This got me so frustrated that I put everything into my
last 2 running legs which got me back to the bronze medal
position.”
Prentice‟s bronze medal led to Great Britain winning the gold
teams medal ahead of Ukraine who won the silver and Kovacs‟s
Hungary snared the bronze.
Men’s Final
Jamie Cooke (GBR) has produced one of the greatest comebacks in history to come from behind and
become the 43rd Junior World Champion.
Pavel Iliashenko (KAZ) managed to hold on to win silver and Alexander Nobis (GER) came from 10th
position at the start of the combined event to win bronze.
Cooke started the day terribly, finishing 29th in the fencing, a massive 264 points behind the winner of the
discipline Eslam Hamad (EGY). Cooke, who is the swimming world record holder, then produced a
phenomenal swim which was over 7 seconds ahead of his nearest rival to burst back into contention.

I was 2nd a few years ago and when I realised I had a
chance of winning after the 2nd shoot here today I told
myself that there would be no way that I would be coming
2nd again. This is a dream come through and gives me so
much confidence for the important 2012 Olympic year.”
Iliashenko was so proud to bring a silver medal home for
Kazakhstan: “This medal means a lot to me and my
country. I am so proud of my performance today, I
performed well in all the disciplines and this medal is the
perfect way to end 2011.”
A near perfect ride, completed his comeback which had
him in 5th place heading into the combined event.
Precision shooting and lightning quick running meant that
Cooke etched his name into the history books and realised
his dream of becoming the Junior World Champion.
The 21 year old who has already secured Olympic
qualification standard through his 4th position at the Senior
European Championships stated: “I didn’t expect to win
here today, especially after my terrible fence, were I just
could not get a hit. My main goal at this event was to get
experience for next year’s senior tour, so I did not place to
much pressure on myself.
Nobis, who had his first full
year on the senior circuit
this year was overjoyed with
his performance: “I am so happy, I can’t believe it. I was so nervous at the
start of the day. But a 6th place in the fencing relieved this pressure and I
started to believe in myself.
When I started 10th in the combined event, I did not think I had a chance for a
medal so I was relaxed. But in the last 5 shots I realised I was very close to
the leaders so I ran as hard as I could and managed to catch 3rd position
which was unbelievable.”
A strong overall performance by the Koreans meant they went home with the
teams gold medal ahead of a very consistent Russia and Belarus.
Mixed Relay
The Hungarian pair of Sarolta Kovacs and Bence Demeter
has dominated from start to finish to win the gold medal in the
Mixed Relay Junior World Championships.
The Hungarian‟s finished 20 seconds ahead of Ye Zhang and
Jiahao Han (CHN) who claimed silver and the Russian pair of
Gulnaz Gubaydullina and Ilia Shugarov who won a welldeserved
bronze.
"This was my 1st time doing a mixed relay, but I really liked it"
stated Kovacs. "I loved competing with Bence Demeter. We
were really a really strong teal, but it was really hard as the
Chinese & Russian team were really good."
This gold medal caps off a dream week and a dream year for Kovacs who successfully defended her
individual Junior World Championship title on Saturday. Her partner and boyfriend Demeter finished 4th
yesterday, so he will be pleased to finish his breakthrough season on a high with a gold medal.

The Hungarian pair had a very consistent day. They finished 2nd
in the fence with 27 victories only 1 behind the impressive
Chinese pair. Kovacs & Demeter matched their performance from
the fence in the swim also finishing 2nd with a time of 1:57.72.
Only 2 rails down in the ride, meant they finished with the highest
score and a lead of 25 seconds heading into the combined event.
With both of them being incredibly experienced, they never looked
like losing the gold and comfortably pocketed yet another gold
medal of their young, fledging careers.
Women’s Relay
Freyja Prentice & Lydia Rosling (GBR) have stormed to the
Women‟s Junior World Championships Relay gold in
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The British girls , who both won gold in the Women's teams
event on Saturday produced one of the great combined
event to move up from 5th position to steal the gold from
the German pair of Janie Kohlmann & Annika Schleu who
had to settle for silver. The talented team of Adrienn Toth &
Zsofia Foldhazi (HUN) held off a fast finishing American
team to win bronze.
The British team, including individual bronze medallist
Prentice thought their dreams of gold had vanished after
finishing in 6th position in both the fencing and swimming to
be well of the pace set by the Ukrainian team of Anastasiya Spas and
Ganna Buriak after 2 events.
A solid, yet unspectacular ride of 1148 points gave the Brits a glimmer
of hope heading into the combined event. With the pressure lifted off
the girls, they were able to compete care free in the combined event
and it showed.
The 21 year olds competing in their last Junior World Championships
posted the fastest time in the combined event by an astonishing 17
seconds to overtake the German team on the final lap to finish their
junior careers on the ultimate golden high.
“I’m very happy that we could end the championships like this,” said
Prentice, who crossed
the finish line to take
gold. “The Germans,
Hungarians, Russians
and Ukrainians all had
good teams in the relay today and we knew they wouldn’t
be easy to beat.
“We were always near the top but never quite in front today
and that took the pressure off us. We kept our heads down
and it paid off.”
This gold capped a dream Championships for Great Britain,
walking away with 3 gold medals and one bronze.

“Jamie’s gold made the competition. It was amazing to get an individual gold,” she added. “We couldn’t have
asked for a better championships – it’s been amazing."
Men’s Relay
The Korean pair of Woojin Hwang & Soengjin Kim has led from start to become
the Men‟s Relay Junior World Championships title in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Koreans did enough to comfortably beat a fast finishing French team
represented by Valentin Prades & Geoffrey Megi who made up for their poor
showing in the individual event to win silver. The German pair of Patrick Dogue
& Christopher Krause just held off Belarus for a dream bronze medal.
The Korean‟s set the tone for their golden day with brilliant fencing performance
leaving all their rivals in their wake. They
followed this up with a 2nd place in the
swim, narrowly behind the Russian pair.
After 2 events, they looked certain for
the gold, however a poor ride of only
1096 points gave their rivals a glimmer of hope heading into the
combined event. Unfortunately for the rest, that was the closest they
got, with the Koreans keeping their nerves intact and ran away with
the Junior World Championships title with.
"1st is very good and we are both ecstatic" said Soengjin Kim. "We
were good in all the events today, except for the riding, but it worked
out to be good enough. This is the best combined event we have both
every done we are both very happy."
Final Medal Tally
After the excitement of a record breaking 47 relay teams
and 94 athletes competing in all 5 disciplines in one day
the 43rd Junior World Championships has been drawn to a
close in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Great Britain confirmed themselves as the top junior
Nation by topping the medal tally with an impressive 3
gold‟s and 1 bronze, led by the extraordinarily talented
Jamie Cooke. The traditional powerhouse of Hungary
came in 2nd with 2 gold‟s with Sarolta Kovacs grabbing
them both in the individual and the mixed relay with her
boyfriend Bence Demeter.
Korea reiterated their standings as an emerging dynamo of
the Pentathlon world by winning 2 gold in the Men‟s team
and the Men‟s relay. With performances on the senior level as well this year, the Koreans can now truly call
themselves a medal contender in all categories.
10 countries, including 3 Asian nations won medals at the 1st ever Junior World Championships in South
America, which shows the global diversity of the sport that is set to celebrate its 100 year anniversary in the
Olympic Movement at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The local Argentinian organising committee did a fantastic
job hosting their 1st big international event. With great
facilities, perfect horses, all the athletes, coaches and
officials had a fantastic time and will never forget their time
in Buenos Aries, especially if they are the stars of the
show Jamie Cooke and Sarolta Kovacs.
UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann who was in
Argentina to witness the entire event stated: "This was an
extremely high level competition. There was strong
support from the military academy/General Bari del Valle
SOSA. The facilities at the academy were very close
together in a wonderful park environment.
There was a high level of performance and as always a
friendly atmosphere. The 2011 Junior World Championships could not have been run better and they will be
great hosts for the 2012 UIPM Congress which will be the 100 year anniversary of Modern Pentathlon being
in the Olympic Games."
All the junior athletes will now rest, some longer than others as a selected few will be straight back into
training for the senior circuit which begins with World Cup #1 in the USA on 8 March.
The junior Pentathlon world, now turns its focus to Drzonkow, Poland who will host the 2012 Junior World
Championships on 2-8 September 2012.
Pong Diplomacy that brought China and the
USA together during the Cond War 40 years
ago through a table tennis match.
Mr Bouzou stated “This first Peace and Sport
Table Tennis Cup is clearly a success. Many
reasons can cause conflict, but without doubt
there is one element that can unite: Sport. We
hope that this initiative will encourage other
UIPM SECRETARY GENERAL ELECTED WOA PRESIDENT
UIPM Secretary General at the Peace & Sport Table
Tennis Cup in Qatar.
UIPM Secretary General Joël Bouzou has been elected
as President of the World Olympians Association
(WOA) at the General Assembly at Lausanne,
Switzerland.
The 1987 Modern Pentathlon World Champion
Focused his election campaign on two main themes-
encouraging social commitment from Olympians and
providing services to Olympians during and after their
career.
Bouzou was nominated by a vast majority in the first
round of voting. He succeeds the American Richard
"Dick" Fosbury at the head of the only international
organization which unites all of the 100,000 athletes to
have competed in an Olympic event.
Bouzou, who is also the President and Founder of Peace & Sport said he wants the WOA to become “a
global player to serve society. Sport has given us so much. It has changed our lives. It can be a life-changer
for so many more people in so many different ways. And we are the ones who can make that happen (...).
"The World Olympians Association is the most amazing reservoir of resources, experience and talent you
could find! And yet it remains largely untapped. We need to change that.”

This position is a reward to a man who
has dedicated his life to Modern
Pentathlon and the Olympic
Movement.
Not only has he competed in 4
Olympic Games (Moscow 1980, Los
Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona
1992) and won an Olympic medal, he
has also been the Secretary General
of UIPM since 1997 where he has
overseen a significant rise in the sport.
These 2 factors, together with the rest
of his distinguished career we can all
see Bouzou is the right man for the job.
