Commencement Background Information
The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle
Ages. Since the early European and English universities were founded by the
church, students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all
times. Although the custom was brought to this country in colonial days, the
requirement for students was soon dropped. The custom for professors was
confined to special occasions such as graduation exercises and inaugurations
of new presidents. With the increase in the number of educational institutions
and the development of new subject-matter fields, some confusion arose
in time about the types of gowns and the specific colors to denote various
degrees. To introduce desirable uniformity and set up a clearing house for new
developments, a commission representing leading American colleges produced
The Intercollegiate Code in 1895. In 1932, a national committee of the American
Council on Education again revised this code into The Academic Costume
Code. It was revised in 1959. Although not obligatory, most of the educational
institutions in the country follow it in awarding their own degrees, earned and
honorary.
The most significant part of the academic dress is the hood. In some medieval
universities, professors were paid directly by their students. After a lecture,
the professor would walk down the aisle of the lecture hall and students would
drop coins into the hood. It is said that the quality of the lecture frequently
determined the amount of the compensation. The color of the hood’s velvet
border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of
the institution granting the degree. The hoods of those receiving a Master of
Arts or an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters or Doctor of Humane Letters
have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries
with it a longer hood. The doctoral hood also has side panels on the back.
Although most doctoral gowns are black with black velvet bars and panels,
in some cases the color of the gown is that of the university conferring the
degree—blue for Yale, crimson for Harvard, slate for Columbia. All such gowns
have black bars and panels.
Academic fields may also be indicated by the color of velvet on the doctoral
gowns: three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending
from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. For the degree of Doctor
of Philosophy, the color is dark blue. For Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctor
of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow. These colors
also appear in the velvet of the hood, unless the hood represents an honorary
degree. The Doctor of Laws has purple velvet, as does the Doctor of Juridical
Science, the highest earned degree in Law. The Doctor of Public Service has a
hood with velvet in pale aqua.
Caps are black. Tassels are usually black for bachelor’s and master’s degrees,

gold for doctorates. Gowns for bachelor’s and master’s degrees are plain black,
but sleeves of the latter are short with trailing “elbows.” Doctoral gowns of
European universities are usually very colorful. The caps are often of soft material
like velvet and are ordinarily not the conventional mortarboard shape.
The various disciplines are indicated by the following colors used on hoods:

Engineering—orange Physical Education—sage green
Fine Arts, inc. Architecture—brown Public Service—pale aqua

Some of the job titles used by today’s colleges are derived from religious
titles used in the Middle Ages. For instance, “chancellor” was originally a clerk
for a bishop. The clerk sat behind lattice work resembling the “X” used in
cancellation. The position was originally called “canceller” and later became
chancellor. A dean was originally the chief priest in a large church. The term
marshal used in a commencement ceremony to designate faculty members who
lead the academic procession, was originally used to designate the keeper of a
royal horse stable.
This year, Central Maine Community College graduates are wearing black
gowns with a black and red tassel. Members of Phi Theta Kappa, the national
two-year college honorary society, are wearing a gold stole. Honor cords of
various colors are worn around the neck and hang loosely down the front to
represent academic distinction. The single gold cord identifies those graduating
with honors. Students graduating with High Honors and President Honors
wear two gold cords.
The academic procession will begin the ceremony. During the procession
the traditional Pomp and Circumstance will be played. The Grand Marshal will
lead the procession followed by the candidates for graduation. Faculty and
professional staff of the college will be next in the procession led by the Faculty
Marshal. The College President, senior college administrators, trustees and distinguished
guests and the Commencement speaker will comprise the platform
party and will be the last to enter the hall.
The Grand Marshal will carry the College Mace. A mace was a weapon of
war in use in Europe, chiefly among cavalry, as late as the sixteenth century. It is
a club-like, short (usually one-handed) weapon.
Sometimes the head—a round ball with or without spikes—was detached
from the shaft and connected by a short chain. This was to provide more cen-

trifugal force when the mace was used in hand-to-hand combat by knights on
horseback and fitted with armor.
Today, a mace is a symbolic instrument used to denote power and authority,
or in some cases, simple pageantry. In England, the mace is used as an emblem
of the officers of state, before whom it is carried. A mace is also carried by the
Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Representatives and it is placed to the right
of the Speaker.
The symbolism of the mace, as it pertains to academic institutions of the
United States, is much less sanguinary than the original concept. For us it has
come to represent the power and authority of the institution of higher learning
as held by the Board of Trustees. In this sense, it is more like a scepter or “Rod
of Empire” than a weapon of war. During the ceremonies, the mace is placed in
front of the center lectern.
Degrees will be conferred by the College President upon the recommendation
of the faculty and by the authority of the Board of Trustees. Congratulations
will be offered by the President and Trustees of the Maine Community
College System. As a matter of local tradition, faculty advisors congratulate
their graduating advisees as they leave the stage. Once the degrees have been
conferred and distributed, the President will authorize the new graduates to
move the tassels on their caps from the right side to the left side, as the final
symbol of graduation.
