At PRO we are well aware of the fact that each discipline has 

its own dynamics. And that the material should be adapted 

con nuously due to changing demands. It’s a job that you 

can safely leave to our engineers. They know that using lightweight 

carbon and aluminum is an extremely delicate ma er. 

And that both materials come in numerous types and have a 

mul tude of applica ons. It’s an art that they have mastered 

like no one else. 

The 2012 collec on has stepped things up. And we’re not 

just talking about material ma ers here. In this fashionable 

market the design of the parts has our con nuous a en on. 

PRO also updates XCR and Koryak. This component groups 

uses lightweight yet super sturdy alloy construc ons. 

Made especially for the highly demanding disciplines of XC, trail 

and all-mountain riding. State-of-the-art and extensively tested 

material with a stylish look, just like the other collec ons.

choose PRO. And that a number of renowned

If you want to be the best, you have to work with the best. 

That’s what our Star Series is all about. Six top athletes 

who rule their own discipline help PRO to develop unique 

components. And they pro t from it themselves too, because 

in turn these unique parts contribute to new successes.

STAR SERIES 

Mark Cavendish 

Unstoppable. That’s the label that s cks to supersprinter 

Mark Cavendish. Whenever he speeds up, his compe tors 

are gasping for air. When we approached Mark two years 

ago to see if he wanted to collaborate on designing his 

own components, it didn’t take him long to say yes. 

Because Mark Cavendish will bene t like no other from 

reliable, rigid, super strong yet lightweight components. 

He was closely involved in the development and design 

of his own super s bar-stem combina on and proudly 

put his signature on it. This handlebar stem ensures that 

Mark can transform all of his energy into speed. 

The results of this enormous e ciency are history. 

With victories in Milan-San Remo, the Tour de France, 

Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España amongst others, 

Mark underlined his class.

STAR SERIES 

Thomas Vanderham 

A man with a mission. That’s Thomas Vanderham. His main 

goal is to draw more a en on to the ‘Big Mountain’ side 

of freeriding. He does this in all possible ways. In 2009, 

for instance, he spent a lot of me with the crew of The 

Collec ve to complete the lm ‘Follow me’. In the future, 

Thomas wants to focus even more strongly on spectacular 

photo and lm work in order to promote his sport and 

sponsors. PRO is one of his proud partners. Together we 

developed a Thomas-proof component series. A great 

challenge, because you can de nitely call Vanderham’s riding 

style extreme. And if the parts survive usage by Thomas, you 

can rely on the fact that you too can expand your boundaries 

with this new Star Series.

The Athertons 

Dan, Gee and Rachel are part of the legendary Atherton family. 

Together they dominate the downhill and 4X scene. Because the 

Athertons rule in extreme sports they also make extreme demands 

on the material. By collabora ng with this English family PRO scored 

a bull’s eye, although the Athertons gave our designers quite a 

challenge. In the end, reliability and a trendy design were the points 

of departure for another unique Star Series. Dan, Gee and Rachel 

knew exactly what they wanted and were able to provide us with 

very detailed feedback. And because the Atherthons immediately 

tested the PROtotypes in prac ce, every demanding mountain biker 

can now hit the trails with top material.

Craig Alexander 

One of the best triathletes in history collaborated with PRO to develop 

the op mal triathlon handlebars. Mul ple world champion Craig 

Alexander put high demands on PRO’s design team and it shows in 

the result. Aerodynamic carbon monocoque aerobars with a sleek and 

slender design that limits drag to a minimum. He is impressed by the 

design and proud that he was able to incorporate his knowledge and 

experience in a product that is available to every fana cal triathlete or 

me trialer.

General 

Cyclists and mountain bikers make contradictory demands on their material. It has to be as 

light as possible, but s ll be reliable. Or extremely rigid yet comfortable. These are mindboggling 

problems that our men at research & development love to solve. From the rst 

brainstorm sessions via the drawing board to PROtotypes and tes ng in prac ce: at PRO 

we know how to develop advanced components. We are backed in our e orts by unique 

collabora ons with, amongst others, Mark Cavendish, Thomas Vanderham, The Athertons, 

Craig Alexander and the professional cycling teams of Rabobank, Skil-Shimano, HTC-Highroad, 

Team GreenEDGE cycling and Française des Jeux, the Dutch na onal track squad and the 

cyclocross racers of BKCP Powerplus. The input of these top athletes helps our engineers to 

make the components even be er than they already are.

Gee Atherton - Team Animal Commencal

Aluminium 

Aluminum is the most used material in the bicycle industry. And that’s hardly surprising, seeing its 

many posi ve characteris cs. First of all there is the weight, which can be kept low thanks to the 

excellent strength to density ra o. Despite the general collec ve term, there are many di erent types 

of aluminum on the market. The aluminum industry o ers more than 300 combina ons of alloys and 

heat treatments. 

The processing is what determines the quality of the end product. The strength is increased by adding 

other materials, the so-called alloying. Aluminum alloys are subdivided into several categories with 

di erent characteris cs. The 1000 series is closest to pure aluminum, the 6000 and 7000 series are the 

ones that are applied most frequently in the bicycle industry. The much-used indica on ‘T’ means that 

the aluminum has undergone heat treatment. Along with alloying this is a fundamental aspect in the 

process of producing the correct star ng material for bicycle components.

Forks, frames, stems, wheels, seat posts, pedals, saddles, handlebars, crank sets... 

Nowadays there’s hardly a bicycle component to be found of which there is no carbon 

version. Its low weight and high degree of design freedom have created a true rage. 

It is di cult to compare all of these di erent products, though. That’s because carbon 

is available in many varia ons. And, just as with aluminum, it’s mostly the composi on 

that makes the di erence. For each individual component and the desired performance 

characteris cs that go with it, one has to carefully select the appropriate carbon 

composite. 

In order to do this, PRO’s research & development team collaborates with leading research 

ins tutes and produc on facili es. There, we make use of the insights gained in Formula 

1 racing and the avia on and aerospace industry. The quality of carbon is determined by 

a number of factors. An important dis nc on is that between woven carbon, like 3K for 

instance, and unidirec onal carbon. The rst type is the most well-known; these carbon 

mats are responsible for the familiar carbon pa ern. For unidirec onal carbon a much 

more advanced layer structure is required, but if constructed correctly it o ers a lot more 

strength per unit of weight than tradi onally woven carbon. 

Basically, what it comes down to is that woven carbon is strong in all direc ons, also where 

you don’t need it. By using unidirec onal carbon, weight can be saved where possible and 

strength can be added where necessary. Finally, the resin that is used to bond the carbon 

is also of importance. This addi on contributes to the material’s weight and s ness. 

The advantage of unidirec onal carbon is that it needs less resin than woven carbon. 

This results in a considerable weight saving. Experimental components are a bit lighter 

s ll, because less resin is used. However, the chances of tearing are considerably greater. 

When it comes to saving weight we never make compromises that go at the expense of 

safety and reliability.

Quality marks 

The PRO engineers expand the boundaries of aluminum and 

carbon by adding high-grade materials, through science 

and through patented design and construc on techniques. 

All components are tested and cer ed by independent 

test centers. For the cer ca on, the European (EN) and 

American (CPSC) standards are followed. This means that 

our components comply with the strictest safety standards. 

Indeed, in many cases we have even surpassed the 

requirements by 50%. Simply to be sure that the parts will 

amaze even the most demanding users.

Gigan c forces are unleashed when Mark Cavendish accelerates in the nal 

kilometer. Via handlebars and crank set, he wants to convert his power into 

forward speed in the most e cient way possible. 

That’s why Mark tested various PROtotypes of stem-bar combina ons to

The Vibe7S series is a hit within the pro 

peloton. These components are installed, 

amongst others, by the teams of Rabobank, 

Skil-Shimano, HTC-Columbia and Française 

des Jeux. For these parts PRO constructors 

chose mainly the 7000 alloy, which primarily 

consists of aluminum, zinc and magnesium. 

This high-grade alloy has resulted in 

a component group that is rigid, light 

and reliable. We’re talking about nononsense 

components that o er excellent 

performance under all condi ons. The very

used these parts in races from Paris-Roubaix

Triathlete Craig Alexander is a perfec onist. Luckily, PRO came by to discuss the further development

The PRO sponsored team of HTC-Columbia 

is a true me trial specialists’ forma on. 

No wonder that these men put many demands 

on their material. A er all, if you want to 

perform in a me trial aerodynamics are 

an absolute must. PRO eagerly took on the 

challenge to build the world’s fastest me 

trial handlebars. We consulted specialists 

from all over the world to nally arrive at the 

Missile Evo. The handlebars haves excellent 

adjustability and the armrests can be adapted 

according to your own wishes. 

To minimize drag the handlebars have internal 

cable rou ng and a teardrop shape. The rst 

PROtotype was immediately successful in 

winning the team me trial in the Giro d’Italia 

of 2009. Since then, the handlebars have only 

got be er.

PRO Merchandising program 

The PRO Merchandising program o ers di erent 

types of displays, xtures and tools to help every 

retailer throughout Europe to simplify PRO’s in-store 

presenta on and maximize the impact on sales and 

pro tability. 

This program is divided into several di erent product 

categories. Have a look at the descrip on on this 

page to get an idea of the selec on of PRO displays 

and merchandising tools we are o ering. 

The PRO counter display draws a en on to PRO’s core products. 

It can be used with or without the included poster-holder. The display 

is designed for use on a counter, but it also ts into a standard slat wall 

system to highlight the PRO products in combina on with other brands. 

PRO IN THE SHOPS 

The PRO pillar display is a mul use oor unit with di erent 

kinds of hooks to display various PRO items. These hooks can 

also be used on a standard slat wall system to highlight PRO 

products. 

In addi on to the men oned items, the PRO 

merchandising program also includes an exclusive 

PRO Shop-in-shop (SinS), a counter display that 

can be used for PRO computers and / or lights, 

PRO wheel hooks, and category management tools 

such as branding signs and dividers to create a 

dedicated PRO area in your shop. These tools can 

also be used on slat walls. They give the store the 

sort of look and feel that unmistakably projects 

the image for performance and quality that your 

customers have come to expect from PRO.
