Newsletter presented by
Peter Gleeson, Senior Leader
A Date With The Distinguished
Distinguished—/dɪˈ stɪŋɡwɪʃt/ - successful
and respected by many people,
standing above others in character or
reputation.
What is it to be distinguished? Could each
of us be distinguished? Could we become
distinguished? Will we achieve or experience
a life which is distinguished?
In Week 10 of this term, our Year 5, 6 and
7 students will be presenting themselves
to audiences as a ‘person-of-note’ - a distinguished
human being. The Year 6 and
7 students will present, to an audience of
family and friends, a soliloquy as a distinguished
mathematician or scientist.
This presentation will be the culmination
of many weeks where the students have
developed a deep understanding of a particular
person and, in particular, why this
person’s work in science or mathematics
is or was so notable.
The range of persons studied is wide.
Here are some of them: Leonardo Fibonacci,
Johannes Kepler, Benjamin Franklin,
Marie Curie, Alexander Fleming, Dian
Fossey, Hazel Bishop, Jane Goodall and
Leonardo Da Vinci. Do check the school
calendar dates for details of the presentations.
When asked recently on who might be a
distinguished person, some younger students
felt you needed to have quite a lot
of grey hair!
Korean Student Home Stays
Thank you to the families who have indicated
an expression of interest in hosting a
visiting Korean student in August. Students
in Years 5, 6 and 7 were invited to share
this information at home. If you would like
to find out more about the program but
have not yet return the note, please call the
school on 83790500 and speak with Principal
Joy Milward. We will forward more information
as it becomes available.
Bon jour Réunion
Just yesterday we were privileged to host
two distinguished visitors from Réunion.
Our guests were on a fact finding mission
which may result in having university
teaching students from Réunion placed
for a period later next year. They were
most impressed with our French studies
program with teacher Catherine Moore.

OSHC SCENES
This week our Year 4—7 classes have experienced the
amazing science of the CSIRO travelling laboratory. Hands
on was the order of the day and a final “Big Bang” combined
class was a highlight.
Perhaps we will find some “Distinguished Scientists”
emerging in the decades to come?

Term 2 Week 8 2011 Page 3
Parents and families play an integral role in learning...
At Glen Osmond Primary, on any one day, we
see committed parents listening to children
read, running the canteen, coaching teams or
talking to classes as invited speakers. We
know this makes a difference to children’s
learning as well as helping to build their self
esteem and sense of belonging to a community.
Not surprisingly, professionals in speech
pathology and occupational therapy confirm
what we know and are doing.
The following ‘snipit’ from an article lifted from
the website (http://www.loveandreilly.com.au/
articleandextras.html#skiptomylou) makes interesting
reading and may whet your appetite
to read more.
PARENTS AND THE LANGUAGE AND
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
When we observe some young parents lovingly
interacting with their children and providing
a stimulating learning environment for
them, we might conclude that ‘good’ parenting
comes naturally.
We might see such parents in the local park or
supermarket, watching, caring for, engaging
and communicating with their children. How
gratifying it is to see that ‘positive parenting’ is
alive and well. When we consider such observations
we are reminded again of the importance
of the child’s first teachers – the parents.
WHAT POSITIVE PARENTS DO
Parents, who are positive, interact enthusiastically
with their children and delight in their development.
Not only do they provide the necessary
love and support for their growing children,
positive parents also –
• engage with their children, enjoying quality
time spent together
• provide new experiences for their children
and give them information at just the right
time, so that their children can take advantage
of opportunities for incidental learning
• take the time to talk with and really listen to
their children
• encourage language growth by talking about
words and what they mean
• play with their children, following their lead
and stimulating imagination
• read together and tell stories with their children,
discussing the events in the story and
the reasons why characters acted or felt how
they did
• model, respect and teach their children
about the ‘right’ way to interact with others,
• impart core family values and label their own
feelings and emotions, so that in time their
children will learn to understand the feelings of
others.
• offer encouragement as their children tackle
new skills and become more independent.
• involve their children in daily routines and
activities, finding ways to allow them to contribute
to ‘real’ tasks
When interviewed by Kerry O’Brien on the
ABC’s 7.30 Report (7/12/2009) Martin Seligman
said that Australian parents, when asked
what they most want for their children, answer
“happiness, fulfilment, civility, balance”.
When asked what schools teach, the parents
say “discipline, conformity, literacy”. Our own
GOPS values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect
and Caring describe our own goals for
success. It is everybody’s role in the partnership
to find ways to grow healthy happy and
balanced individuals who are equipped to face
life with confidence.
At GOPS, the parents, grandparents, carers
and teachers alike would agree that these are
powerful, achievable and wise goals to set for
our children.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The ‘Date With The Distinguished’ learning journey being
experienced by the Year 5, 6 and 7 students (and
teachers) has a focus on the George Eliot belief...
‘It’s never too late to become
what you might have been’
Don’t look back on the day (the week, the year, your
life) and regret. Don’t say “If only I had…..” Take the
opportunity as it presents, take it by the scruff and run
with it.
‘OP SHOP HOP’
During the evening we will be ‘recycling’ some of those classic
dances—the Madison, the Bus Stop, the Lindy Hop to name a
few—so dust off the archives, brush up on the footwork and be
prepared to trip the light fantastic.
Strut your stuff on the retro cat walk in our “Get Back There” fashion
parade.
This is a marque evening on the GOPS interactive calendar so
you have just got to be in it!
More details coming very soon so keep an eye on this space in the next newsletter.

HOLIDAY COACHING CLINIC
OUR PHILOSOPHY & COMMITMENT
TO PARENTS & EACH STUDENT
As a member club of the South Australian National Football League our fundamental aim is to promote the game of Australian Rules Football. Because
we are a football club – not a business – our objective is to provide opportunities for young players to acquire and develop the skills necessary to
participate in our great game. The holiday coaching clinic was developed in 1991 for the purpose of providing specialised
coaching to primary school students in a well-controlled and organised environment. It is an integral component of the Club’s development
programme and we strive to ensure that participants receive quality coaching from accredited coaches.
FEATURES OF THE STURT FOOTBALL CLUB
SCHOOL HOLIDAY COACHING CLINICS
• Groups are organised according to age and restricted to approximately 12 participants per group. This allows a ratio of 1 coach per 12 children.
• The clinics are properly resourced. Students work with footballs appropriate to their age. There is little point to a seven year old using a senior football
because they simply do not possess the motor skills to cope with adult equipment.
• Our coaches are accredited and receive regular in-servicing to compliment their coaching skills.
• Activities are conducted in a safe environment. In the event of injury. (Accredited Sports Medicine Australia Level 2 Sports Trainer is on duty at all
sessions.)
