The Silverdoor label was set up by Irish composer Roger Doyle primarily to
release his magnum opus “BABEL,” which took him 10 years to compose and
on which he had worked with 48 collaborators and composed 103 individual
pieces of music. It celebrates the multiplicity of musical language and
evolving technologies. Doyle composes with, and for, computers and orchestras
equally, and regularly gives piano concerts of his music. In the coming months,
he will re-launch the Silverdoor back catalog along with several new releases.
Silverdoor comes to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International Ltd.
Alexandra Silocea made something of a splash with her debut AVIE recording featuring the first five Piano Sonatas by Prokofiev, which
“I don’t recall having heard being played better by anyone,” according to International Record Review. For her follow-up she immerses
herself in the aqueous sonorities of some of the great pianistic composers of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. She also adds a distinctive stamp
with a commission by young Norwegian composer Martin Romberg.
Among the numerous famous performers the 20 th century gave to the
world, David Oistrakh ranks especially high. Oistrakh recorded violin
concertos by Bach, Mozart, Viotti, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Dvoˇrák,
and Taneyev in the 1950s and 1960s. He was in the prime of his performing
career, appearing with some of the best conductors such as Nikolai Malko,
Herbert von Karajan, Alexander Gauk, Kirill Kondrashin, and Gennady
Rozhdestvensky. The performances of Brahms’ and Franck’s sonatas by David
Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter, also featured in this set, has been unanimously
recognized by domestic and foreign audiences as one of the 20 th century’s best
STRAVINSKY: The Firebird • Petrushka • The Rite of Spring
History united the names of two geniuses, Igor Stravinsky and Sergei
Diaghilev, in one of the brightest cultural phenomena of the previous
century: the Russian Seasons in Paris. Stravinsky’s three Russian
ballets — The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring — were fruits
of their collaborative creative process. In aggregate, these three ballets
demonstrate the intensity of the composer’s creative evolution and
acutely unexpected stylistic “twists” that would be characteristic for
him in future.

TCHAIKOVSKY: The Maid of Orleans (complete opera)
Melodiya presents a recording of The Maid of Orleans, a rare opera
masterpiece by Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky realized by outstanding
contemporary conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky with the great
Russian singer Irina Arkhipova performing the main part. The opera
was recorded by the All-Union Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir
led by Rozhdestvensky, and also features two remarkable baritones:
TCHAIKOVSKY: Iolanta (complete opera)
The first performance of Iolanta took place in St. Petersburg on the stage
of the Mariinsky Theatre under the direction of Eduard Napravnik on
December 6, 1892. The opera does not contain a single negative character;
the entire dramaturgy of the composition revolves around the blindness of
a beautiful young girl who does not perceive her handicap. This recording,
carried out by the Bolshoi Theatre in 1976 under the direction of Mark
Ermler, has a set of invaluable merits. First, it is distinct for its remarkable
performers. But most importantly, the orchestra is permeated with an
atmosphere of remarkable congruence and accord, which was an inseparable
characteristic feature of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR and, unfortunately,
would be lost in the next few decades…

BORODIN: Prince Igor (complete opera)
Melodiya presents a complete recording of the epic Russian opera
Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin! It took Borodin 19 years to
compose this opera, based on the old Russian poem “The Tale
of Igor’s Campaign” and also incorporating material from other
sources. Eternally busy, the author combined composing with a chair
in chemistry and an active social life, and never finished the work.
Prince Igor reached us thanks to the effort of the composer’s friends
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov, who managed
to complete Borodin’s masterpiece. This recording — featuring a
galaxy of outstanding soloists such as Ivan Petrov, Elena Obraztsova,
Vladimir Atlantov, Alexander Vedernikov, and Arthur Eisen — is the
only one that features the music of the opera in its entirety!
RACHMANINOV: Aleko (complete opera)
In 1892 the Moscow Conservatory graduated a group of talented young
musicians, among them the 19-year-old Sergei Rachmaninov. His amazing gift
did not go unnoticed by the professors of the composition department. The
object of their amazement was Rachmaninov’s diploma work, a one-act opera
named Aleko that he created in just 17 days! Despite being his first test in the
genre, Rachmaninov’s piece was distinguished by a surprising integrity of plot,
the vividness of the major psychological issues, and the freshness of intonation
and melodic patterns. Rachmaninov took a fancy to Pushkin’s story about the
self-willed Zemfira, her dispassionate father, and the savage stranger Aleko,
who made a remarkable triangle of characters.
CHOPIN: 24 Preludes, Op. 28 • SCRIABIN: 24 Preludes, Op. 11
Melodiya presents Rudolf Kehrer, one of the most extraordinary and
original representatives of the Russian piano school of the 20 th century.
This remarkable musician is a rare combination of scientific and creative
talents in one man. Born to a musical family, Kehrer started to study
music at an early age but later became a mathematics teacher. After a
long break, he returned to his music studies. After Kehrer won First
Prize at the All-Union Competition of Music Performers in 1961, he
achieved his long-awaited fame. In 41 years of performing activities,
the pianist gave over 2,000 concerts and taught at the conservatories
in Tashkent, Moscow, and Vienna. Living at the junction of Russian
and German cultures, Kehrer included in his repertoire Viennese
classics and Russian composers. However, he always showed a
preference for romanticism.
The content of Brahms’ four symphonies is contrasting: the monumental and
epic First Symphony, the genre dance Second, the lyrical and dramatic Third,
and the tragic Fourth. An extraordinary power of the composer’s art lies in
its humanism and philosophical optimism. Evgeny Svetlanov (1928–2002),
People’s Artist of the USSR (1968), is a great Russian conductor as well as a
composer, pianist, and public figure. He recorded all symphonies by Brahms
and Mahler, as well as symphonic compositions by Beethoven, Schubert,
Schumann, Dvoˇrák, Grieg, Saint-Saëns, Bloch, Elgar, Shostakovich, Prokofiev,
MESSIAEN: Whitsun Mass • DARASSE: Organum VIII • AMY: Three Inventions
His whole life, with imperturbable regularity, Olivier Messiaen played the
liturgical organ at the Trinity Church (Paris). His Whitsun Mass, however,
is his only organ work explicitly tied to the mass. Xavier Darasse’s Organum
VIII is impregnated with vivid, almost blinding colors in a complex rhythm,
striking by its unusual instrumentation: a quintet of brass and organ, homage
to the long resonances and the dynamic leaps of the brass. Three Inventions
by Gilbert Amy are unquestionably among the most beautiful organ works of
recent years. Their sonority and registrations frequently evoke the aesthetic
of the classical organ. Their composition — brilliant, warm, and extremely
varied — requires the interpreter to combine rhythmic precision with general
flexibility. François Espinasse, official co-organist of Saint Séverin church in
Paris and first-prizewinner in organ in Xavier Darasse’s class, finished his
training with André Isoir.
BACH: a collection of organ works
It is thanks to Albert Schweitzer that the Eglise Saint-Thomas in Strasbourg
and its famous Silbermann organ holds a special place in the 20 th -century
rediscovery of Bach’s organ works. In addition to writing the book Bach,
the Poet-Musician, in which he sought to explain the public’s instinctive
attractions to the cantor’s works, Schweitzer was also titular organist at
the Eglise de Saint-Thomas and a fierce defender of its instrument. It was
also Schweitzer who originally had the idea of organizing a concert entirely
devoted to Bach’s music on the anniversary of his death, July 28, 1908, an idea
that was to be taken up again each succeeding year. These annual concerts
became one of the most solid institutions of musical life in Strasbourg.

The Gürzenich Quartet’s latest CD release features not one but two classical
heavyweights: Beethoven and Brahms! Drawing on the experience of their
countless performances in the orchestra pit, which require split-second
reactions to spontaneous impulses from the stage, the four musicians of the
In the 17 th century, the term “flower” was often used to allude to a poetic or
musical composition. Music appears fresh and new with each performance, it
expresses the feelings of the heart, and it inebriates like a precious flower. This
is at least part of the meaning of the title of this anthology, dedicated to that
monster of organists, Girolamo Frescobaldi. His works are justly distinguished
among the various “flowers,” and offer a particularly refined bouquet.

The music on this CD is comprised of the soundtracks of two films made by
Irish filmmaker Bob Quinn in the 1980s, plus an arrangement of an old Irish
song. The music was to play a central role in the feature film Budawanny,
which was shot as a silent film in black and white. It required 70 minutes
of music, uninterrupted by anyone talking over it (a composer’s dream!)
The music has elements of Irish traditional music, European art music, and
Middle Eastern music. Set in the west of Ireland, the film tells the story of a
priest and a woman who fall in love, and the tragic events that follow.
The fifteen Mystery (Rosary) Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber
form a fascinating cyclical work. The use of fourteen different violin
tunings (scordaturas), deviating from the instrument’s normal tuning
in fifths, makes the sonata cycle unique in the history of the violin.
Annegret Siedel, artistic director of the Bell’arte Salzburg ensemble,
has recorded the Mystery Sonatas on nine different violins of the
17 th and 18 th centuries. She succeeds wonderfully in bringing out the
sacred character of the music, particularly in its meditative passages,
without falling short of the music’s high technical demands.
Young violinist Catherine Manoukian finds no challenge too great. The Canadian artist is
not only an impressive soloist, appearing with celebrated orchestras around the world, she
has also added to her musical education with the world-famous Dorothy DeLay in New York
by completing a Masters in Classical Philosophy. It was surely no accident that the emphasis
laid on the theory of aesthetics. Yet in the end, Catherine Manoukian decided on a career as a
musician, and now presents her fifth recording. She has chosen the Elgar concerto, painted on
a large canvas, and this globetrotting artist with German, Armenian, and Japanese roots has
opted for something rather special: a live recording, performing with the Weimar Staatskapelle
BEETHOVEN: Missa solemnis in D major, Op. 123
Beethoven’s most significant mass, conducted by maestro Kurt Masur and performed by famous
musicians: this recording convincingly reflects the great composer’s humanist ideals in a way that
is rarely heard. Here, belief and enlightenment blend in the most moving manner.
Die schöne Müllerin
Peter Schreier: tenor/Walter Olbertz: piano
SCHUBERT: Die schöne Müllerin, Op. 25
Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin is at first glance a series of cheerful songs, which on closer
listening reveals an ostensibly ideal world with dark undertones. Peter Schreier is a master of the
great art song genre, for whom a beautiful tone, clear articulation, and sensitive and intelligent
interpretation have always been paramount.
WAGNER: Parsifal
This concert recording represents a real stroke of luck, for which we can thank Herbert Kagel,
a conductor who championed music during the GDR era that was not viewed as “politically
correct.” This 1975 recording of Parsifal, featuring snappy tempos and devoid of the usual mystique
surrounding Wagner, is an interpretation that seems to have evolved well ahead of its time.
This recording marks the artistic peak of two choral legends of the past century: Rudolf
Mauersberger, who was choral director at the Dresden Kreuzchor, and his brother Erhard, who
held that post at the Thomanerchor in Leipzig. Here, they join forces with their choirs and some
MOZART: Die Entführung aus dem Serail
Otmar Suitner’s Mozart interpretations during his years in Berlin are legendary. This recording of
Die Entführung demonstrates that the Austrian conductor was already well aware, when he worked
in Dresden, of how to portray Mozart’s dramatic verve and his psychological sensitivity. This is a real
gem, recorded in the Lukaskirche in Dresden, where so many recordings with Suitner were made.
If in the end I have chosen what you hear, it is, perhaps, because what is
considered to be (not very exactly and, chronologically speaking, with
much inaccuracy) the ‘romantic spirit’ represents a ‘revealed mystery’ for
me. In reality, the only piece to be ‘historically’ romantic in this program is
Mendelssohn’s Sonata in F, Op. 4. The rest of the program was born on the
“And if the performer feels joy, you will feel pleasure.” This is how
Telemann concluded his advice to young composers in his autobiography.
Perhaps never before has a composer given so much to instrumentalists,
writing an incalculable number of pieces for a whole variety of ensembles
throughout a life characterized by an almost unbelievable facility
combined with a rare capacity for hard work. Let us therefore reach out
towards the happiness this music gives us, the joy of playing, and the
composer’s pleasure. Did not Telemann himself say, “The notes sought
SCARLATTI: a collection of harpsichord sonatas
Domenico Scarlatti found himself in the awkward situation of being the
son of one of Europe’s most celebrated composers, Alessandro Scarlatti
(1660–1725). Domenico, for all his efforts, never achieved the immense
glory of his father in the field of opera, and for a long time his career was
overshadowed. It was only after his appointment as harpsichord teacher
to Maria Barbara of Braganza that he seemed to finally find his own
inimitable style. At the height of his artistic maturity, Scarlatti had his
sonatas copied into albums dedicated to Maria Barbara and seemed — to
borrow Ralph Kirkpatrick’s wonderful expression — to write “as though
reliving his life.” The remarkable harpsichord-tiorbino on this album
(Napoli, ca. 1710) is currently the only known example to have survived
with its original disposition intact: one keyboard with the usual brass
strings, and a second keyboard with gut strings.

Period instrument ensemble Barokkanerne presents Carl Philipp Emanuel
Bach in a debut recording with LAWO Classics. Led by Alfredo Bernardini,
the group performs groundbreaking symphonies and concertos of this
ardent next-eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. The music spans more
than 30 years of C.P.E. Bach’s life as a composer, from his engagement as
court musician in Berlin to his last years as director of music in Hamburg.
This is Sturm and Drang and Enlightenment at its fieriest! Italian baroque
oboe specialist Alfredo Bernardini, one of the world’s leading performers
of early music, has garnered a number of international prizes for his many
recordings. He is, among other things, the founder and artistic director of the
ensemble ZEFIRO. Principal harpsichordist Christian Kjos is a sought-after
performer who, as a member of the quintet Ensemble Meridiana, has won a
number of prizes at international early music competitions.
Valen Trio
HVOSLEF: Trio (2010) • VALEN: Trio, Op. 5 (1917–24) • EGGE: Trio,
Op. 14 (1940)
The trios selected for this recording represent three generations of Norwegian
composers and trace an interesting line, both historically and musically,
through the past hundred years. Valen’s Trio is a transitional work from his
late Romantic tonal compositional style to atonal expression. It is regarded
as the breakthrough work in the development of his personal style. Egge’s
Trio is an epic, solemn work based in part on the Winter War between the
Soviet Union and Finland. It is a major work in Egge’s output, in format and
expression comparable with Shostakovich’s Trio in E minor. The work has
seldom been performed since its premiere in 1941. Hvoslef’s Trio was written
for the Valen Trio. He heard them play in January 2010, and was filled with
enthusiasm for the musicians, both as individuals and as a group. Much has
been written about Hvoslef’s original and vivid tonal imagination, and it is
absolutely vital for this work.
Jan Vermeulen is considered one of today’s most prominent fortepiano
virtuosos. After his piano studies at the Brussels Conservatory, his
interest and urge for authenticity pushed him in the direction of
historical instruments. His pioneering recording of the sonatas of C.M.
von Weber at the beginning of the ’90s marked the start of a flourishing
career. In that same period he founded the Florestan Fortepiano Trio
(later renamed Tröndlin Trio), one of the first to perform the classical
romantic repertoire on authentic instruments. Now, Jan Vermeulen
harvests worldwide fame with this recording of Schubert’s complete
piano works for Etcetera, an opus magnum completed in 2010. His
extensive discography has received great acclaim from the international
press, and he is widely praised as “the ideal Schubert interpreter.”

This project is based on the premise that the 15 th century related the blending of two cultural
universes: the written and the oral. The boundary between the two contexts apparently was so thin
that it allowed the two traditions to coexist within the same universe of communication: idioms,
allegorical figures, and quotations thus converged into the same cultural interpretation angle.
These religious prescriptions were received and implemented by great composers like Palestrina,
Nanino, Ruffo, Asola, and Croce, major figures in the musical panorama of the second half of the
16 th century. However, right at the end of this tumultuous century a kind of musical revolution
took place, whose origins were recognizable within specific cultural debates arising from the
development of Italian and Florentine Humanism in particular. This called polyphony into
question, opening the gates of music to a world of human emotion.
Battistini sent him to Assisi to study with Father Antonio Maria Amone (1768–1848). Once Father
The Soloists of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela have invited Bruno Procopio
to conduct a program dedicated entirely to Jean-Philippe Rameau. Discovering French Baroque
music is an astonishing adventure for the Venezuelan musicians, and it marks their first foray into
18 th century French classical music. This recording session is also a foretaste of the celebration to
come in 2014: the 250 th anniversary of the composer’s death.
J.S. BACH: French Overture, BWV 831 • COUPERIN: Huitième Ordre
In this recording, Jean-Luc Ho pairs Bach’s French Overture with
the Huitième Ordre, one of Couperin’s most celebrated works.
Both are played with the French “art of playing the harpsichord,”
as expounded by Couperin and adopted by Bach, bringing to light
the connection between these two masterpieces.
