physiological races of these pathogens, virtually<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g outside of the evaluation of fungicides<br />

for control of these fungi has been done over the<br />

past decade (Frowd 1980). If seed-dress<strong>in</strong>g fungicides<br />

are not used, high levels of loose kernel<br />

smut develops <strong>in</strong> ratooned sorghum.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce loose smut may under some conditions<br />

be shoot-<strong>in</strong>fect<strong>in</strong>g (Dean 1966), an occasional endemic<br />

is possible.<br />
