and F. chlamydosporum), Macrophom<strong>in</strong>a phaseol<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

Rhizoctonia solani, Phoma sorgh<strong>in</strong>a, Exserohilum<br />

rostratum, and Trichoderma harzianum were found<br />

to colonize sorghum toots and stems. Among<br />

these fungi we found F. moniliforme van subglut<strong>in</strong>ans<br />

and E oxysporum to be early colonizers,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> abundance after the <strong>in</strong>duction of<br />

drought stress from onset of flower<strong>in</strong>g to matu­<br />

rity. M. phaseol<strong>in</strong>a was not isolated until after the<br />

hard-dough growth stage and then only from<br />

drought-stressed plants (Fig. 1).<br />

Data cited above show that <strong>in</strong> most cases of<br />

charcoal rot, M. phaseol<strong>in</strong>a is not the sole cause of<br />

the disease under natural field conditions, but<br />

acts <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with other pathogens to produce<br />

it. In other words, what is visually identified<br />

as charcoal rot is a sign of one fungus<br />
