In southern Africa, the sorghum-grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

area lies from 2°N latitude to almost 32°S latitude<br />

and from 12 to 41°E longitude at altitudes<br />

from sea level to 2600 m. Mean annual ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong><br />

these areas will range from less than 300 mm to<br />

as much as 1500 mm. With<strong>in</strong> and among the<br />

countries the topography and ra<strong>in</strong>fall may vary<br />

considerably; consequently, several dist<strong>in</strong>ct ecological<br />

areas for sorghum production exist, and<br />

many sorghum diseases (Table 2). For example,<br />

Beck (Williams et. al. 1980) reported as many as<br />

20 pathogens affect<strong>in</strong>g sorghum <strong>in</strong> Malawi.<br />

A beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g has been made to identify diseases,<br />

and record their occurrence. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1984,<br />
