GUN CATALOG
Aug. 20, 2011 Gun Auction #228
1
1. Bill C-68, or Prohib. 12-6, indicates guns which were prohibited under Bill C-68 & they can
only be purchased by people who already own this type of gun. Please ask us if you are in doubt.
2. Some firearms such as machine guns & some s/auto rifles can only be sold to Special Category
Buyers & you must be sure that you already qualify.
3. Some firearms that are considered “Antique” by U.S.A. standards, such as modern perc. &
flintlocks, & any gun made before 1898, are not always considered “Antique” in Canada. Ask
Jim Baggaley about any guns you may want to buy so as to avoid problems. Please familiarize
yourself with the current import regulations as we cannot be responsible for U.S. regulations any
more than we can be responsible for changes in Canadian regulations.
4. Please note: We cannot store guns forever, so please make your shipping arrangements etc. as
soon after the Auction as you can. After 30-days, storage will be charged and guns may be sold to
recover same so please attend to this.
5. NOTE!... All ammo & components require at least a P.O.L. & we cannot ship these by regular
carriers so please make other arrangements.
6. NOTE!... All gun parts require an FAC.
MOST IMPORTANT ! PLEASE READ
PLEASE REMEMBER, THE CATALOG IS ONLY A GUIDE, NOT A GUARANTEE
When we describe any item, we endeavor to encourage you to look at what might be of
interest to you as a prospective purchaser. It is not our intention to de-grade any item, but if
there are obvious defects that we observe we may mention them, but we could miss something, so
please look things over for yourself. If we feel there is a good item you should look more closely
at we will perhaps indicate this by saying “Appears As New, Exc., VG, VG+”, etc., or in some
extreme cases, “Poor”, but these are opinions only ! This is done merely to draw your attention
to that item, but is not intended as a guarantee. In the case of Firearms, we have not test fired the
guns, and sincerely suggest that if you are in doubt, have them examined by a professional. For
example, a re-blued gun may appear as new, but many fine English shotguns are periodically sent
in for re-blueing etc. because the owners want them to be protected against the normal usage and
climate. This in no way detracts from the value of the firearm, but we hope you will examine
prospective purchases to your own satisfaction. We do not get into percentage grading of finish
because it seems that nobody can totally agree, and I have seen the “Experts” argue about that for
hours.
In the Major Firearms Auctions, all descriptions are offered as an opinion only, because
unlike a store, it is assumed that the runner-up bidder knew what he was buying and was willing
to take the item “AS IS”. A further word of caution is, “If you are buying for somebody else, you
are responsible as to condition etc. and will have to pay for the item in any case.” Many times
people will say to you, “If you ever see such and such a thing, buy it for me.” Our advice is
DON’T DO IT ! , unless you can live with it yourself.
Special Interest: The following 3-guns have an interesting history but must be sold separately
because they have come back together at this Auction, they belong to different Consignors.
Their history as brought to us is this: The Rem. .44 perc. Revolver Ser.# 22377, & the
Ithaca Shotgun were used by Wells-Fargo at different times to guard shipments between
Fargo, North Dakota, & Winnipeg. The firearms were traded in or sold to “The Hingston
Smith Gun Co.” in Winnipeg, They then became “Mason & Smith”, & when they closed up
their Gunsmith, “Bill Macdonald” acquired the guns. Mr. Macdonald then worked with
Stan Townend of “The Townend Gun Shop” on St. Mary’s Road in Winnipeg. In the late
1920's or 30's, Townend became a Bicycle Shop & sold all their equipment & guns to a
local Gunsmith, “Nick Jansen”, on Dubuc St. in St. Boniface. When Mr. Jansen died, his
Widow sold all the guns & equipment to “Mr. Terry Gale”, a Collector in Winnipeg. Mr.
Gale had the guns in his possession from the 1970's. This covers the ownership of the
Wells-Fargo guns for at least a ninety year span.
years, and has never been offered for sale before. During this time Dot & I made a trip to
visited his family plot where he is buried. Also included is a Factory letter stating the gun
as shipped in the blue, to W.B. Belknap and Co., Louisville, Kentucky, July 25, 1901, one
of 2-guns shipped. It was nickle plated & engraved etc. later for the Sheriff. Also
228-B-38.--- Large, Dresden China 3-piece set of Old English Coach w/Horses & Footmen etc.
228-B-39.--- The Masonic Ring worn by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, ( pronounced Hay-mer),
who led the Posse that finally ended the crime career of Bonnie & Clyde. This ring
was originally purchased by me ( Bud Haynes ), March, 1986, at Tom Keilman & Son‟s
Auction in Austin Texas when a Museum was selling items of memorabilia from Frank
Hamer‟s career, and comes with affidavit from Frank Hamer‟s Son, Frank Hamer Jr.
stating that his father wore the ring throughout most of his famous time as a Lawman, and
was wearing it at the time of the Bonnie & Clyde finale. The ring is clearly described in
the Affidavit, and although worn, the Hamer name is faintly visible inside the band.
Included in this lot will be a book , “I’m Frank Hamer”, about Frank Hamer‟s life
w/various pictures of him when he was wearing the ring. The book is the forth printing
dated 1980 and is a Collector‟s item in itself, complete with a dust cover that has just the
tiniest of marks at the corners, and when offered for sale, these early copies are about
$175. The book contains over 115 various pictures of historical value and includes many
of Bonnie & Clyde Barrow, Buck Barrow, (dead and alive),the death car, and many
famous people with Frank Hamer such as Roy Rogers, & Tom Mix etc. The book was
so much in demand that it has been reprinted, but this is a pristine early copy.
Also included is a brass Belt buckle which was produced to honor Frank Hamer and
the demise of Bonnie & Clyde to be produced in a limited edition, and it was marked as
“Sample” for the family. There is some literature obtained from the Internet telling
about Frank Hamer and his exploits as well as a notice about his Son, Frank Hamer Jr.,
(1918-2006), who was also a Ranger, being inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame.
In addition, I am including an excellent copy of the book, “The Texas Rangers”, by;
Walter Prescott Webb, first published in 1935, and reprinted from the original plates in
1965, with the addition of a foreword by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The book has
the original dust cover which is also as new. The details and history are fascinating, and
the final chapter is about the life of Frank Hamer, and details the end of Bonnie & Clyde,
even including an inventory of the weapons found in the Death Car.
I also included my bidder‟s number & the original Auction tag that was on the ring. I
was given #1, because Dot and I met Tom Keilman at the viewing and he was pleased
that we had come so far to attend the Auction. Donna & Vern Vossler were with us as
well, and we had a great time.
