ON GUARD
Track sprints into state

The Spanaway Lake track team
has come a long way this season
considering all the criticism
and challenges thrown their
way. The team’s success
refl ects on the fact that they
have a positive attitude
and they make it a point
not to blame each other
for personal faults. Even
though the team is smaller
this year, they have received
a lot of recognition for their
hard work and dedication.
The track team placed
second in the Sentinel
Classic beating competitive
teams such as Curtis,
Enumclaw, Bethel and
Graham Kapowsin. This
year the Boy’s 4 x 1 team has
accomplished a lot, winning
at almost every event.
Marvin Evans, Chris Pierce,
Jedadiah Bickham and Julian MCcrann
were very proud when they heard that
they qualifi ed for districts. They didn’t
have any problems communicating

since the 10 th grade. “We’re in love and
we support each other, “ says Bickham.
The girl’s team has lived up to
expectations, since they also qualifi ed
for districts. Britteny Hayes, Andee
Robison, Tiffani Wilson, and Brittany
Young have worked hard to get where
they are. It’s a big accomplishment
considering the girl’s 4 by 1 hasn’t gone
as far as districts in 15 years. Both teams
faced tough competitions at district but
they didn’t qualify for state. However
the boy’s 4 x 4 did make it to state.

with a time of 3:28:34.
Bickham, Johnson and
Young, the only girl at
state; also qualifi ed
for the high jump.
Another highlight of
the season was when
junior Brittany Young
jumped 5’3 breaking
the girl’s high jump
record, which has
been in Spanaway
history for 23 years.
“It’s cool that people
know about it, I
guess,” she says.
The seniors aren’t
leaving disappointed

because most of
them have been offered scholarships
or like Bickham, they’ve been
recruited. “They had as much fun as
they worked, “ says Coach Adams.
Tennis fi nishes the
season strong

Although the Lady Sentinels have won few
games, they have proven that their dedication
and development has inspired a change for next
year’s girls. Different from basketball, football, and
track, the girls have to fi ght for the best out of fi ve
wins. Sure, we only see their record but, have we
actually looked into the complications of tennis?
Winning three out of fi ve matches could in fact
be diffi cult. Imagine if football or basketball was
the best out of fi ve. Back to back games can be
extremely tiresome. The peers should applaud this
years Tennis team for their hard work and effort.
The tennis team has done very well as far as
sportsmanship and dedication. “Coach Tanaguchi
is a great coach, she never gives up on us and
she helps us fi nd our weakness so that we can
fi x it”, said Sarah Abenilla, wait a 7-4 record.
This young team has found dedication that will
strive to make them a stronger and more consistent
team for next year. Beating Thomas Jefferson left
a memory that will encourage next year’s season to
start and fi nish strong. The lady Sentinels become
more and more experienced with every game; win
or lose. This makes for a strong returning team.

Soccer
refl ects on
season

The Spanaway Lake soccer team
has ended their season. This team has
been overlooked, not really mentioned
in the halls of Spanaway Lake.
The soccer team went 1-13 overall. They
managed to beat Graham Kapowsin
with a score of 2-1. Overall the team
managed 5 goals, of which 4 came
from the freshman and junior players.
Andrei Martynau fi nished with 2 goals,
Chase Smith, Mitchell Pinedo, and
Christian Wegel all managed one goal.
Seniors of the soccer team included
Cody Thompson, Jesus Pinedo,
Christian Wegel, Mychal Mitchell, Jason
Epperly, Juan Perez, and Aaron McCool.
Others included Davis Tanner,
Herman Phillip, Manny House, Andrei
Martynau, Trevor McFadden, Lance
miller, Juan Perez, Mitchell Pinedo,
Chase Smith , and Ben Williams. Each
contributed skills and talents to the fi eld.
“As the season went on we got
progressively better. By the
end we rounded out into true
soccer players,” said Thompson.
Hopefully with the refl ection on
this year’s results they will form a
new strategy, they have potential, so
lets give them our support. Good luck
soccer team in next year’s season.
