I dont want to be a stupid girl
By: Courtnie Martin
Feature Editor
The world’s new female role model
consists of the all around stupid girl.
Every time the public hears a celebrity
making comments that not only make
them sound dumb, but also causes us
to belittle their intelligence, we soak it
up. Why exactly does society settle for
young, dumb, and blonde? Why do we
completely blow off the sophisticated,
intelligent, and over-achieving women
of America?
I mean really, Chicken of the Sea?
Hello it is tuna, not chicken! I wonder
how much Jessica Simpson got paid
to say that. Or buffalo wings? They
actually came from a buffalo that fl ies.
Is she serious?
On American Idol, singer Kellie
Pickler said that “salmon” should not
be pronounced with a silent L. So would
she be okay with me pronouncing
her name without an L? She also said
that she did not know what calamari
was. It is okay to not know but to act
stupid like you are supposed to know is
another thing. Is this how citizens want
the next generation to be represented?
When it comes time to pick the next
President of the United Stated and you
fi nd out that the First Lady is none
other then Jessica Simpson herself,
what will you think when she is afraid
to give the homeless Chicken of the Sea
because she is not sure whether it is
chicken or tuna? This is ridiculous.
My role model is not going to be
a beautiful, young, and dumb lady. I
would much rather prefer someone
like Pink, who thinks you should
succeed in life and give yourself goals
and values. Pink is exactly right: “What
a paparazzi girl, I don’t wanna be a
stupid girl.” And neither do I. This
country should be ashamed of how
much publicity the act of dumbness
gets. If I knew I could be paid to be
dumb, why would I go to school? We
should value our education and our
uniqueness. Being a little behind on a
joke is one thing, but no exposure to
Immigration causes a riot...literally
By: Corbin Constantineau
Sports Editor
On May 1, the immigrants and
their supporters set out into the
streets of Seattle and put on a huge
demonstration. This huge rally of an
estimated 20,000-25,000 people was
the largest demonstration Seattle has
ever seen. The whole purpose was for
one reason: So all the people who have
migrated to the United States would
be allowed to stay legally.
I have talked to many of my friends,
family members, and teachers to hear
all sides of this argument which has
risen from this issue. I have found that
my views are not very different from
many other people. One of my main
concerns is the rising population of our
country. Many of the demonstrators
told reporters that America is suppose
to be the land of opportunity and the
land of the free. As more and more
people are entering the country our
population is fl ying higher and higher.
Is this freedom?
CNN reported that there are some
illegal immigrants who are on welfare
and other government aided
securities. Many of these people
are also not working. It was then
brought up that they are not paying
taxes, but are getting free money
and food. There are thousands of
hungry and homelss American
citizens. In my opinion if our
government is going to put nonworking,
non-tax paying people on
welfare, it should be the American
citizens.
But the sad truth is that this
does not apply to all immigrated
the real world is another. Ladies, do
not let this ‘new’ dumb role model be
our example for success. And men, if
you want to live your life under the
love and care of a female who does not
know the difference between chicken
or tuna, then good luck in life. Give
yourself more respect then thinking
the only way to get rich quick is by
acting stupid. Because really, that is
far from it. Settling for making your
self appear to be stupid when you
really are not is out right ludicrous
and I frown upon stupidity.
families. Many people come to this
country and work very hard, making a
better life for themselves. They pay all
their dues, but the few that do not follow
the rules make a bad name for everyone.
While I was at work there was a man
from Mexico talking. He brought up the
issue about immigration and he seemed
very angry. I asked him what his view
on it was. He responded to me saying “ I
am from Mexico. I am here to work hard
and make a better life for my children. It
is the lazy and disrespectful immigrants
who are going to ruin it for all of us.”
What he said stuck with me and after
that I realized that it was not all of the
people who are immigrants that are
causing problems, but a select few.
At the rally many of the people were
talking about how America will crumble
without them. They are too much part
of our lives to live without. I think that
there may be an issue with cheap labor,
and there will be jobs that Americans
will not want to do. However, overall we
will overcome this problem and work
through it all. I personally do not care
who comes in or out of this country, but
the people who are in here should have
A little kindness
goes a long way
By: Chelsea Barker
As I sat in the gym on May 10
watching and listening to the story of
Rachel Scott, I could not help but feel
bad about the way I have lived my life. I
was never a kind person. I never stopped
to help someone out and I never helped
someone who was getting made fun of.
In fact, I was the person making fun
of someone else. As much as I would
tell myself that I want to be that kind
of person, I found myself feeling bad
again because I knew it probably would
not happen.
I know that some people think that
the assembly was just about some girl
who was nice. But to me, it was more
than that. It gave me a chance to really
sit back and take a look at the way I
have acted.
While the presentation was going
on, I could hear many others, including
myself, start to cry. The message of
the assembly hit everyone hard, and
afterwards, I was stuck with a feeling of
guilt and awe.
I felt guilty because I knew I should be
the type of person Rachel was. I was in
awe of the way she cherished everything
and was so kind. Honestly, I could never
see myself being completely like her.
However, I could start being kind to
others, and possibly make a difference
in some person’s life.
I also got the chance that night to go
to the presentation at Spanaway Junior
High. It was a little different than
the version we saw, but yet again that
feeling of guilt and awe came rushing
back to me. I could not help but feel bad
for all people I have been rude to in my
life.
I do not know what it is like to lose
someone close to you and I hope I never
have to go through that. I can only
imagine how hard it must have been
on their family. However, I admire the
way they are taking a
tragedy and turning
into something
inspirational. I
signed the banner
and accepted
Rachel’s Challenge.
I hope you did the
same, and maybe
together we can start
a chain reaction in
our school.
A senior year I will never forget
By: Shadaya Denegal
Guest Reporter
I never thought that being a senior was so
diffi cult. I mean typically senior’s thoughts
are of hanging out with friends before
we go our separate ways, accepting your
diploma, and getting all fancy for the prom.
But in my case, it was much different. As
I became a senior this year, I began strong
academically, mentally, emotionally and
physically. I continued to hang out with good
people, had a really good homecoming and
an even better eighteenth birthday. Even
though it did not go exactly as I planned,
Christmas was one of my special days. We
spent the holiday with several of my mom
and my friends gathering together, sharing
happiness and joy while fi lling our tummies
with delicious food. Life was going great. I
was in a good relationship, had a new job
and my best friend had just moved in with
me. But life went downhill all of a sudden.
In January, I became a whole different
person. The only trait that stayed the
same was my personality. My boyfriend
ended up going to Iraq, so I began hanging
around the wrong people; gang members.
The opposite of the people I normally
Happiness. a : a state of well-being and
contentment. This defi nition means that
you can be happy with just being okay.
Happiness does not mean you have to be
great. You are simply content. In this world
we defi ne happiness as being this great
thing that many feel they are missing out
on. Guess what? Those people are sadly
mistaken! And one day they will realize
they have been happy the whole time and
did not even see it.
Lets just say happiness is based on a
self-knowing of what makes you happy.
Your happiness therefore depends on what
makes you happy. So how is it that we can
compare happiness if we all have different
defi nitions of being happy? In the case that
this is true and I am not totally clueless,
you cannot compare happiness. This is
still true even with the knowledge saying
that happiness is the state of well-being
and contentment. You still have different
defi nitions on what well-being is. You
also might be content with things others
are not content with. So, happiness is not
comparable. This is a good thing because
a lot of people are not happy just because
hang around. Hanging around them
became the biggest mistake of my life.
Yes, Shadaya, this shy, friendly, quiet
person began associating with hardcore,
thuggish guys who were unpredictable.
I thought it was cool to hang out with
them because I was not used to that type
of lifestyle. As weeks passed, the choices
that I began to make started getting
worse. I was becoming a person who my
mom could not recognize.
After I heard the words, “I don’t like
who you are right now,” made me think
about what I was doing and I began to
change back to who I used to be. But it
was too late. I started moving forward
while my best friend stayed in the past.
Our friendship was fading away because
I wanted to be the person who I was for
eighteen years, rather than the person I
was in those past weeks.
I fi nally stopped hanging out with
them, but it was already too late. I
wanted to be myself again. I lost the
person who I believed to be my best
friend and almost lost my life. Then, the
challenge I had to face was almost losing
the person who put me on this earth; my
mom. She’s the apple on my tree, but if
they feel others will always be happier.
Then there are some that just will not let
themselves me happy.
Even with the knowledge of happiness
some people still will not be happy. Most
people who thought that they were not
happy will notice that they are happy.
They will see that they have been blind.
You can be happy without a perfect life.
No one is saying that you have to be okay
with everything to be happy. What I am
trying to say is that you do not need to
put so much stress on being happy.
Just be content and you will be fi ne.
she did not survive, I would not
bloom to be as strong as her.
Being shot was the most
surprising tragedy in my life. It
seems like bad things happen to
good people. God knew it was not
time for us to leave this earth and
he gave us another chance to live
our life. This tragedy made my
mom and I bigger and stronger
people. It was a wake up call to
the values of life. I fi nally came to
the conclusion that I would have
to do a better job of choosing who
my friends are, because trust is a
major part of a friendship. The
incident that I went through was
a lesson learned. Be careful who
is in your surroundings.
I am trying my hardest to
graduate with my class and
become a confi dent person.
Being shot and having a nine
hour surgery was nothing I
planned my senior year to have
included. Not to me or anyone,
but life is unpredictable. Think
of it this way: my senior year will
be one that I will never forget.
Why can’t we all be happy?
Just remember not to confuse
happiness with being better then
content. Do not compare your
happiness to others. It will almost
always turn out bad. You have to
remember that your happiness
does not have anything to do
with others happiness. Only you
can be held responsible for your
happiness.
Now, the real questions are.
Are you in a state of well-being?
Are you content with your life?
Are you happy?
Goodbye Class of 2006
By: Kayla Whitehead
Editor-In-Chief
As I looked back on the impact of seniors, not only
in my life, but in the lives of all the underclassmen, I
realized that seniors really did have an influence on
who I am as a person. Seniors are like our elders, the
experienced ones. They have been here the longest and
pretty much know more about this school than most.
Though as times I have become annoyed with them,
with their high egos and flamboyant senior rampages,
I now realized that they are what complete our high
school experience. They are what we, the underclassmen,
wait to become.
Though all seniors have had an influence on my
high school career, some have truly impacted me more
than others. Those people are the ones I dedicate my
final column of this year to. Those are the ones who
will leave truly missed by me.
It doesn’t matter who you are, everyone has the
group of guy friends that they know and love. I have
been blessed with many that have become important
pieces of my life. They have driven me to the point of
insanity with their all-around clownish behavior and
stupid comments. They have the ability to make me
want to pull my hair out and scream bloody murder.
Yes, they are the guys that love playing jokes on the
girls and doing stupid guy-like stuff. Yet they are the
ones who have taught me many things that I would
have never learned anywhere else. Who else would
teach me how to make a raft? Or learn what guys are
really thinking? Yes they are my look into the inside
world of males and to them I am eternally grateful.
Then there is, of course, my girls. They are the
three who have been my support system through thick
and thin and always caught me when I fell. No matter
what, they always included me. It didn’t matter that
I was a year younger and a grade below, they always
made me feel equal to them. They are such amazing
people and I know they are going to do great things
in their lives. Girls: We have been through so much
together. I will never forget out countless nights of
laughter and random goofiness. You guys are the best
friends a girl could ever have and I am so grateful that
you guys became mine.
And finally to the one that I will miss the most. He
is the one I have spent almost my entire high school
years with. The one who always wished the best for me
and always tried to make me happy. I am so proud of
all the things he has accomplished and I know he will
achieve many more in the years to come. He has been
my other half, my support, but most of all, he has been
my best friend. So to him: I will miss you so much and
I still love you.
To all you seniors that are reading this now, I wish
you the best of luck in your lives to come. Whether
you go to college, travel, or begin working, I hope you
achieve all your goals you set for yourself. The sky is
the limit and I wish nothing but happiness for all of
you venturing out and starting the next chapter of
your life. My own wish for you guy is that you do what
makes you happy and never settle for anything less. So
congratulations class of 2006. You did it!

Hundreds of seniors and their dates
Many came in rented vehicles
The theme of the ball was
easy as it appears. Illegal workers
have been noted for their ingenuity,
Companies who are paying higher
Dedication, Something that is
be done right in high school. No matter
if its schoolwork, studying, sports, or in
this case a school club. MESA, which
stands for Math Engineering Science
Achievement is a club coordinated by
Science teacher Mr. Turner. Which
is designed to push student to learn,
work, and improve. School elementary
through high school all over the country
participate in this activity. The group is
funded by the Washington State MESA
Program. Today, Washington MESA is
in 92 schools (28 districts) statewide.
5,000 K-12 students.
The students that participate
are broken up into groups of 4-6. The
goal for them this year was to take
a mousetrap and use it along with
basic parts and pieces. Doing so build
a mousetrap ran car. That would be
competing against all the other schools
that build the same type of cars using a
strict set of guidelines. There are three
different events to compete in. The fi rst
is the uphill. Which is to have the car go
uphill on a 30degree slope to see how far
the power of the car will bring it uphill.
The next is the 10-meter dash. Which
is on the fl at ground and is to see how
fast the car can go to get across the 10meter
marker. The last and fi nal event
is the 5-meter hault. Which has the
car start out normally but has to stop
Spanaway Lake teams received
fi rst place for the uphill competition.
With their car climbing an amazing
180.1 cm up the steep slope. Which is
an amazing improvement compared
to the heights reached last year. Then
is the 10 meter dash, Spanaway Lake
also received 1st place for speeding
through the fi nish line in an amazing
2.8 seconds! The 5-meter hault wasn’t
as successful as the other two events.
There was trouble getting the cars to
keep the right amount of momentum to
continue on course directly to the fi nish
point.
Also this year each group must
complete an essay techpaper describing
the function of their mousetrap car.
Also to have a poster board display to
show in graph and pictures more about
their designs and progress showing
what they learned throughout the year.
For both these events one Spanaway
Lake team received 1st place in both
these two categories. Beating out last
year’s winners in the essay competition,
Shadle Park High School had to settle
for second place.
There is no doubt that these
years results have been much better
than they were last year. Showing that
the students of MESA are learning
from their mistakes and using a good
technique of trial and error. I asked Mr.
Turner what made this year so much
more successful that last year. He
responded, “ The group collaboration
was way better this time around.
There was big idea sharing, along with
material sharing. Every group was out
to help everyone, which was great.”
Louis Salers wrote a program in the
shop room to have their machine cut
out wheels out of balsa wood. Made to
be extremely light weighted. The Less
weight, the less holding the car back
from speed, power, and momentum.
Space exploration has taken setbacks
over the years, in their greater goal of
one day understanding the space above
our little heads.
With the debate between sending
humans or robots, safety is molding the
prospects of future space exploration.
Planets such as Mars, or Neptune are
being looked at for the curiosity of why
they are different, or merely for the
curiosity itself. While manned missions
are limited to time and supplies, other
space programs are sending satellites
and robot probes either on return or
suicide type missions. Missions to
Titan or other locations may be very
inhospitable, not designed for the frail
human structure. Robotic assistants are
stronger, and designed to be expendable
Monfort. Along with Sophomore Cody
Mitchell are the talented individuals
who made up the winning team who
made it to state and came out with their
heads held high. Now on they’re way to
Nationals. Which is held in Los Angeles,
California. Leaving after school is out
for the summer in late June. All the
hard work and dedication put into
this year has paid off. So wish the best
of luck to the winning team whose off
to L.A. and congratulate all the other
hardworking members of MESA who
all did a great job this year and put all
they had into this club.
Space exploration ethics are debated
to the point of fi nancial burden.
Space shuttle launches have had
disastrous results it is to be the least
expected with such varying factors, with
the smallest claiming lives. However
it is like lives many risks in a pursuit
to understand a greater goal, with no
curiosity there is not a sense of progress,
Humans and astronauts continue on
knowing this. If there is danger it is
faced knowing something greater down
the road can be understood, this can
be humanities preference to robots but
limits must be regarded.
Space exploration has not been
perfected, nor will it in ten or twenty
years but it may or will continue with
multiple types of explored uses, it will
come into decision if humanity will
settle with philosophies or using robots
to understand the looks and confi gure it
into data that becomes empty in history
books.

School Play “Dumb Luck” subpar
In-Depth Editor
“Dumb Luck” was put on by the
Spanaway Lake theatre department
from May 10-13. The play was far from
bad. The only real thing I can complain
about is that I felt “Frankenstien,”
a play performed earlier this year,
was better. The one set was nothing
compared to the numerous sets in
Frankenstien. Do not get me wrong this
play was great. I just felt the it did not
compare well to their previous play.
The following was written on the
back of the fl yer given to the audience
before the show. “Working class
widow Sally Flynn has won a million
dollars! This seeming dream-cometrue
turns quickly into a nightmare of
comic complications. Overnight, the
earthly, strong-willed Sally is thrown
into a whirlwind of unwanted fame,
galloping avarice, and general human
craziness...Sally meets her disrupted
life with salty good humor, ingenuity,
and the human integrity that is at the
serious heart of this very funny play”.
The whole cast did an awesome
job with their lines. They all seemed
to really be into the play which makes
the play that much better. This group
of people really work well together.
Tiffany Navaro played the lucky Sally
Flynn. Again Tiffany did a wonderful job
bringing her character to life. You can
really feel the emotion come out through
Navaro. Ryan Quinn also did a great
job playing Padraic Flynn. One of the
funnier characters to me had to be Chris
Hill. He had just a comedic presence.
It was wonderful to watch. This was a
great play and for all of you that did not
Having fun this summer will be a
priority for most Sentinels. Whether you
play sports, travel, or like to just hang
around, we have some ideas to help you
beat the heat and enjoy the sun.
The best part of the
summer is the Fourth
of July. The usual
highlight of
Independence
Day is watching
f i r e w o r k s .
However, some
people celebrate
the Fourth in
other ways.
Some people
have barbeques
and enjoy spending
time with families and
friends. A great place to
watch a show of fi reworks fl ying
through the air is over by Fort Lewis.
Having parties with friends and good food
can be fun, but some people enjoy going to
see blockbuster movies over the holiday.
The weather this summer will provide
enjoyment and relaxation for those who
enjoy spending time in the sun. A great
local spot to tan is Spanaway Park. There
are nice open areas where you can lay out
and soak in the rays. Those of you who
are into extreme water sports, jet skiing
and boating on a variety of lakes and
rivers here in the Northwest can be a
wonderful way to beat the heat and
have fun at the same time. For those
who do not like to brave the waves,
but want to spend time in the water, a
nice trip to Wild Waves is always fun.
For a calmer and cooler water
experience, head down
to the ocean beaches
to catch fi sh, collect
rocks and shells.
Some
Sentinels enjoy
staying in and
enjoying the
summer and
the sun from
the comfort of
their couches.
With almost
three months off,
it’s a good time to
catch up on your video
games. You’ll have to wait
until November for the Playstation
3 to come fl ying onto shelves with
numerous game titles to follow.
However, until then the Xbox 360
and other gaming consoles will
have to tide you over until then.
Enjoy yourselves this summer
because in no time at all, we will
all have to start the routine again
and all of our summer fun will
have to wait until next summer.
A tasty summer treat for your stomach
By: Becky Stoll
A&E Editor
Now that school is almost out and
summer is heading our way its time
to have some cool treats to make it
through the hot summer months.
Vacation is on everybody’s mind, so
the chosen desert is inspired from
the hot spot of Cabo, Mexico. The
food of the issue is fried ice cream.
Fried Ice cream is a sweet dessert with a
twist. The ingredients to this dessert are:
• 1-quart vanilla ice cream
• 1 cup crushed frosted
•
cornfl akes
1 cup sweetened coconut fl akes
or 1 cup chopped walnuts or 1
cup of cookie crumbs
• 2 large eggs
• 2 tablespoon of sugar
• Vegetable oil
• Hot chocolate sauce (optional)
• Whipped cream (optional)
To start making the delicious desert
you need a lined sheet of wax paper.
Take an ice cream scoop and make
4 large balls of ice cream and place
it on the waxed paper and cover it
with plastic wrap. Place the ice cream
balls inside the freezer for two hours.
The next step is to take a bowl and
combine the cornfl akes crumbs with
either coconut, walnuts or the cookie
crumbs. Then dip the ice cream
balls in the mixture until cover and
then freeze for another 30 minutes.
In a second bowl, beat the eggs and
sugar. Dip the ice cream in the egg
mixture and then completely cover the
ice cream again with the crumb mixture.
Freeze the ice cream for another hour.
Heat a large pot full of vegetable
oil, enough to cover the top of the ice
cream balls. Make sure the temperature
has reached 400 degrees F. One at a
time slowly put the ball in the oil and
fry until golden brown. Each ice cream
ball should take about 30 seconds to a
minute to fry. Remove from the oil and
place in a dessert bowl. If you want you
can add hot chocolate sauce or whip
cream. Repeat same steps for all the
ice cream. Serve the delicious treat
immediately after preparing and sit
and enjoy the nice hot summer days.
A look inside a different life
Shaw returns to her school during a
pep assembly and gets into trouble.
When Shaw meets up with a girl
named Justin K, she wants to be
just like her. Realizing too late that
being like K is not a good thing, Shaw
gets herself caught up into a
crime that could leave Shaw
in trouble with the law.
When a man Shaw has run
into before gets hospitalized,
police suspect Shaw and K
have something to do with
it. The police take Shaw into
custody and question her
only to fi nd out nothing.
With her father’s
whereabouts unknown,
police get aggravated and
turn to peers of Shaw at
her high school. With the principal of
Mt. Douglas on their side, the police
uncover juicy details that could keep
Shaw in custody. Will Shaw remain in
custody? What are the causes of her
getting in trouble? What is it really like
to live on the streets? You will have to
read the book to fi nd out!
Another school year has started and
has now come to an end. All the feelings
and emotions of the students are the
same. But the one thing that’s never the
same are the people that pass through
the halls of Spanaway Lake High School.
Every student is individual in their
own way. One individual who stands
out from the average crowd is Cody
Thompson. Thompson is a senior, class
of 2006. Who is a hardworking student
who’s self discipline has helped him
achieved some of the greatest honors
that could be awarded in high school.
Thompson has Taken many advanced
classes including AP European History,
Calculus, U.S. Government and Politics.
Throughout high school striving to be
the best he could be helped Thompson
maintain a 3.993 GPA. That makes
him the valedictorian for class of 2006.
His plans are to attend the University
of Washington this fall, which was
his fi rst choice of school to go to.
Unsure of what classes he will take in
college, Thompson would like to have
Seniors
a career in genetics. But homework
and studying were not the only thing
Thompson did while in high school.
Sports played a big role in his life since
elementary. Thompson participates in
Cross-Country in the fall, and Soccer
in the spring. Starting our with soccer
when he was young in elementary,
playing all through high school. Then
Cross Country in high school. This
year Thompson was able to be team
captain for the two of the sports.
“Cody’s determination is amazing.
He strives to do the best in everything
in life, and he does a good job at it too.”
Thompson’s mom, Sue Thompson,
told me at a cross country match
in early fall. Between maintaining
his high GPA, Being Valedictorian,
and competing in sports, I asked
Thompson what drives him to be the
best he can be. His response was to be
sure he’s a great role model for his little
brother. That his brother has a great
impact on him and makes him strive
to be the best big brother he can be.
Now that Thompson is done with
high school it is time for him to move on
Standing at 6’2 this left-handed
baseball player has high hopes for
his future. Jason Sailers, number
13, is hoping to get drafted out of
high school. Mainly Salers wants
to become a famous pitcher for
the Boston Red Sox. “Playing
that is only
he will succeed and go far beyond
that. The times have been good
here at SLHS. Your leadership
The dedication you brought with
JUNE 2006
Valedictorian Thompson fi nishes an all-around great senior year
drafted,” Salers said. School is
not his top priority and is excited
to leave this June. Jason Salers
is graduating this year from
Spanaway Lake High School.
Baseball is very important to
Jason he had a rocky season but
has an amazing strike out record.
Although he did not get first place
in record of strikeouts he got third
place in strikeouts. “I could have
definitely beat him at the number of
strikeouts. The only reason he got
more is because he got more innings
pitching. Had I had the same number
of innings in I would have had twice
as many as him easy,” Salers said
about coming in at 3 rd . At the end
of the season he had 62 strikeouts.
“I feel that Jason Salers was a
great pitcher stuck on a bad team.
And if Jason would-have been on
a team with a good
stat record he
w o u l d
Cody Thompson
Salers sails to new heights
definitely be talked about for being
the best pitcher in the area,” said
Todd Keister, assistant coach at
Graham-Kapowsin High School.
This kid is not just about baseball.
Jason and his brother both play in
a band. Salers play’s the drums. “I
like playing the drums it is fun. I
am not that great at it. Play, well,
it is just for fun,” Says Salers.
Jason Salers really enjoyed
shop class. He said that he liked
the teacher a lot and that the
class was pretty much just fun.
Salers uses whatever shampoo
is in the shower. He said that he
does not really play attention
to things like that. “As long
as it washes my hair, right?”
Said Salers about the shampoo.
Jason Salers is an awesome
guy and wonderful athlete. He
gives 100% in baseball. He is a
senior who will be missed. With
his good pitching skills and drive
to win. There is not doubt you will
diffidently see him in the future.

Monica Chase is defi nitely not
what one would call the “typical
female.” Anyone who has known
her since elementary school,
where she attended Thompson
Elementary, would say that
she has always been unique.
“I’m Monica Chase and I feel so
Asian today,” said Chase. Chase is
18 years old, and is indeed Asian.
“That’s probably one of my traits I
Born a true Japanese-American,
After college Chase will be
Along with PC Repair, Chase was
He’s smart, funny and talented
or at least that what all his friends
say. But if you sit down with Curtis
Theimer, then you would
know that everything
his friends say is true.
He has worked really
hard through his high
school career to get
where he is today.
He has attended
Spanaway Lake High
School since the
tenth grade, taking
courses such as
science, humanities,
photography and
video productions.
Theimer has been
passions, I also
love learning
Japanese. It’s
important to
me that I speak
at least some
of the language
so that I can
c o m m u n i c a t e
with that side
of my family,”
said Chase.
Chase had
several favorite
teachers at
Spanaway Lake,
including Nina
Taniguchi, Rick
Pittser, Joann
Parr, Karissa Beckman, and Kathy
Hammad. “Not only have these
teachers helped me academically,
but they have also given me much
encouragement and even just a
listening ear when it came to subjects
not related to school. They’ve all be
so supportive these last three years,
and I thank them. I love them all.”
Don Sticka was Chase’s favorite
school administrator. “He helped
me through a rough time I was
having during my junior year,” said
Chase. “During that year he asked
me if I really should have been
He was vice-president of the
past times at school are editing
on iMovie. He loves taking photos
using his black and white camera
and doing digital manipulations
on the computer. Curtis’s face will
be featured on the SLHS mural.
Senior Jacob Talbot said, “Curtis is
really dedicated. He is really devoted
to his friends and work.” The unique
thing about Curtis is that he gets paid
while working at school. Theimer is
a Bethel School District Computer
thought it was pretty funny.”
Spanaway Lake holds many
memories for Chase. She thinks of it
as a place where she has grown a great
deal academically and humanely.
“I also made a lot of new friends,”
said Chase. “Of course, I was able
to keep in touch or connected with
old friends. It’s funny how people
seem to drift apart or come back
together in high school.” Chase said
that she would defi nitely miss her
friends after high school because she
knows she will be busy and it will be
hard to keep in touch. “I don’t want
to turn into a hermit,” Chase said.
In ten years, Chase sees herself
graduated from college and working
as a Computer Systems Analyst. Soon
after she plans to settle down and
get married once fi nancially stable.
“I look back to before high school
and realize how much I’ve changed
as a person,” said Chase. “Trying
to go through life with struggles,
insecurities, and disappointments
has taught me so much about
responsibility, perseverance, and
patience. Despite the hardships
I’ve been given, I am proud to
be the unique individual I am,
and no matter what people try to
take from me, they cannot take
the pride I have in my identity.”
Behind the scenes with Curtis
he enjoys spending time with his
girlfriend Amber May, hanging
out with friends and playing video
games. He enjoys joking around with
everyone he comes in contact with
as long as they are on his good side.
Talbot said, “ The funniest thing I
can think of him doing is when he
was wearing his Star Wars Jedi robe
on the morning announcements.”
Curtis plans on attending
Clover Park Technical College after
graduation. He wants to become
a video producer and produce the
next Star Wars. After he fi nishes the
courses at Clover Park then he wants
to transfer over to the Art Institute
of Seattle to further his fi lm career.
Curtis has a good further
ahead of him. He’s hard working,
dedicated, and determined.

Bickham’s personality will never be forgotten
By: Courtnie Martin
Sports Editor
Jedadiah Bickham stunned
Spanaway Lake with his all around
personality and outstanding
athleticism. With a 3.4 GPA,
Bickham plans to attend Portland
State University for track. Bickham’s
enthused and excited about attending
PSU after many conversations with
he coach. “All I have to do is fi ll out
my application and I’m in”. ‘Jay
Jay’ said.
“I love my best friend, he is
sexy.” Chris Pierce whispered
behind “Jay Jay’s” back. Bickham
and Pierce have been best friends
for about two years. Bickham is
commonly known to be a great
friend and can always turn a frown
into a smile. “Jay Jay gets along
with everyone, he is always acting
goofy.” Pierce said. His friends have
supported him throughout their entire
high school lives. Karlisa Felder,
Pierce, Marvin Evans, Alex Dinsmore,
Courtney Joyce, Ashley McAlpine
and Aaron Fowler have all been best
friends to Bickham throughout all of
his hardships.
Seniors
Away from his great personality
Bickham has proved himself to be a
great athlete as well. Jedadiah was
a member of the varsity basketball
team, a jumper and sprinter in
track, and wide receiver for football.
He has been offered a position
at Portland State for track. “I am
excited to go to PSU, I won’t be
going alone because Mercedes
Fernandez is going to. It won’t
bother me to be by myself but it will
be tight to have someone else there I
am close to.” Jedadiah said.
This incredible all around person
has had a share of bad days. “Even
though I am pretty much happy all
the time, I have been embarrassed
a couple times.” Sure, everyone
has problems in high school
but Bickham being as goofy and
outgoing as he is experienced his
worst day when he was in the sixth
grade. “I was late for the bus
so I ran out of the house
and to my surprise I felt
a breeze. I looked down
and saw that I didn’t
have any pants on and
all the kids were
laughing at
me. I
was
so embarrassed.” Bickham said.
Bickham has left many fun
memories from elementary to junior
high and here at Spanaway Lake.
Teachers admire him, the students
love his personality and he brings
a positive infl uence to the young
peers of Spanaway Lake High School.
His charisma and character will
not be forgotten and hopefully his
personality will rub off on the up
coming classes. Good Luck ‘Jay Jay’!
Most people recognize students
who have 4.0 GPA’s and are attending
or those who are attending a big fouryear
college because people assume
they will be more successful and
may possibly live better. They never
recognize the average Spanaway
Lake student. Jasmine Rae Minchew
resembles that all around fun,
dedicated, but normal student.
Born in New Castle, Wyoming, this
5’2 High Stepper has decided that she
will attend Pierce College or Clover
Park Technical College. Minchew
has yet to decide which she is going
to attend. Although Jasmine is not
a straight- A student nor does she
participate in numerous amounts of
activities, Minchew manages to keep
a job, pass her classes and dance her
heart out. She has defi nitely qualifi ed
as a great person who does not
get as much recognition as she
should.
Living in a
house with
her
mother Rachelle Lacrosse, stepfather
George Lacrosse and few dogs,
Minchew provides her parents with
tender loving care. Being an adult
living under your parent’s rules is
not always the easiest thing in the
world, but Minchew says, “I love my
parent’s. Even though we fi ght and
argue they are always here for me.”
“If I had to chose one word about
Jasmine I would say she’s sweet but,
since I am her mom I would say she
JUNE 2006
Senior Jasmine Minchew just wants to have fun
is a pain in the butt”. said Lacrosse,
Minchews mother.
Although Jasmine has not yet
decided what she wants to be when
she grows up, one thing is for certain:
“I just want to have fun and be me,
whatever happens, happens.” Minchew
says with a smile.
A pet peeve of Minchew’s is to
just have fun. This sounds out of the
ordinary considering most people’s
pet peeves are the exact opposite of
what they do not like. Jasmine tries
extremely hard not to focus on her
problems and to let the drama take
its course. She does not want to be
subject to anything that could effect
her graduation day or her friendships.
“The one thing I can not stand is
drama. I try hard to stay out of it”,said
Minchew.
“I love Minchew, she’s fun to hang
out with”, friend Danielle Johnson
said. Minchew’s ordinary personality
and kind heart is going to get her far
in life. Jasmine Minchew is just one of
many seniors who are not recognized
for being a great person. She has met
all expectations to graduate and will
walk her last walk with the class of
2006. Good luck Minchew!!

The fi rst thing you hear when you talk
to him is “what’s up”, which tells you
that he likes to get to the point. With
his senior year of high school coming
to an end, Senior Nathan “Nate”
Douville is looking forward to the
future. Before moving into the next big
chapter of his life he plans on leaving
his mark behind here at Spanaway
Lake. With an accumulative GPA of
3.0 Nate has struggled and succeeded
in making sure that he still remains
true to the one thing that separates
him from just being another honor
student. Using his long, fast legs, he
has made it his goal to outrun any one
on the track fi eld and in cross-country.
You may see him in the hallways;
you may see him after school, but today
he is one of the few selected, letting us
know what his year has been like.
If you had not spoken to him you
would not see a philosopher, but an
old fashioned type of guy. If you did
not know him, you would laugh at his
personality and “greaser- like” hair. I
was given the privilege to interview this
senior before our leave, a man of choice
Jackie Voshell.
Nate realized that he wanted t o
runners and thought it
would be fun to join
the team.
Since
Nate has made it his goal to keep
a 3.0 G.P.A. He enjoys video games
and likes to tell jokes. When asked If
he likes to play pranks on his friends,
he responded by saying “pranks are
for noobs” which is understandable
b e c a u s e
he’s always
running from
someone trying to
embarrass him in the halls.
“ I always think I’m right and I hate
people who talk without reasons” he
to learn how to compromise from
past experiences because as he
this country. We want to teach them
about the founders who walked here
fi rst and discovered the land that we as
Americans can proudly say we walk the
land of the free.
As Americans, we have the
in portraying our gratitude to those who
stood up to make a difference so we can
have an American heritage. Pinpoint
“What do
“I’m honest,
generous, caring, weird
Born in Seattle, he grew up
and volleyball.
“What was your most
embarrassing moment?”
“I mooned my ex-girlfriend,
by putting my butt
against my bedroom
window. I pushed
too hard and I
shattered it. I
have 12 scars from it. It was
very diffi cult explaining it to my
parents.”
“Why are you unique?”
“I think differently then people.
I look at things differently. I study
everything not because I am bored
why he lives by the Golden Rule: treat
others, as you want to be treated.
With a role model like Steve Prefontaine
who’s had many glory moments before
dying in 1975, Nate is sure to accomplish
a lot in track and cross country. High
school was like a comfort zone but now
he has to face the “ Real World”. That
day has fi nally arrived for good old
Nate. Hopefully, Nate’s strong enough
to accept life’s little challenges and
learn from them. He plans on attending
Highline Community College to major
in physical education because he wants
to be a P.E. teacher. Douville’s taken a
lot of P.E. classes to help him prepare
for his career. He also hopes that
when he’s ready to teach he will have
a spot for him here at Spanaway Lake.
but because I am visual. I believe I am
everything in a small package. I give
my time to people, and I am the same
at work, school and home.”
True to his word Jackie Voshell is a
“guy’s guy”, knowing the right car part,
and the woman to go with that car. He
is into classics and the good old imports
imports.
“Anything you want to say before
you leave?”
“Yeah…best things happen to those who
wait , this year is going by to fast, and
there is no real time to do anything.”
Jackie Voshell is pondering several
options. He may work at Jenkos,
attend truck-driving school, or go to
Bartending School. Whatever pursuits
he decides to follow we wish him good
luck in them as well as in life.
Preserving our American Heritage through responsibility
fl ag all the way up to a larger explanation
like the signing of the Declaration of
Independence. These are all artifacts
that are monumented to show how we
got where we are today as, “One nation
under God.” This nation has come a long
way since Christopher Columbus fi rst
discovered it in 1492. From the signing
of the Declaration to becoming a free
country, from the Gettysburg Address
to the women’s right’s movement, all
the way up to the attack on September
11, 2001. Yes, we have come a long way,
but on that way, we as a UNITED Nation
stood together and went across the
rocky roads side by side by conveying
dependability, service, leadership and
patriotism.
As a citizen and knowing our
American heritage, we have not only
the responsibility, but the obligation in
pursuing to preserve our heritage and
keeping it well known.
Dependability, leadership, service,
and patriotism are all qualities that
every citizen should convey to teach
others about what it means to be an
American citizen. If we are going to
teach our children about our American
heritage, we must fi rst teach ourselves.
As a child, there is the responsibility
to learn about preserving. As an adult,
there is the responsibility to portray the
qualities that come with preserving. As
a teacher, there is the responsibility
to teach, but also re-learn about the
American heritage. And, as an American,
there is the responsibility for pursuing
it further and making it certain that
as an American, you are dependable,
you serve, you are a leader, and you
are patriotic. As an American, these
qualities show an intelligent amount of
punctuality to an outstanding degree.
It is hard to imagine that through
the eyes of a creation, everything the
eye sees refl ects back to make you think
that somethin so real can seem so fake.
Our country, the sweet land of liberty, is
put together like a puzzle. Although it
seems so hard to put together in times of
grief, if it is given enough gratitude and
enough effort, it can become whole. It
can become united and it can become so
beautiful that it seems as if every piece is
free and independent.
Our forefathers put this puzzle together
and made it whole. This puzzle is the
reason for many things. It is the answer
to all the questions. It was put together
by the ones who abide the saying, “Ask
not what your country can do for you,
but what you can do for your country.”
We cherish our nation and we are
proud to call it ours. The generation will
go on and they will now understand why
it is their responsibility to preserve it as
well.

For a season which was supposed to
After fi nishing 2-18 and defeating
“This season was very frustrating
Statistically speaking, the Sentinels
The Sentinels fi rst win came
they defeated Rogers 6-5 behind the
JUNE 2006
A tough time at bat for the Sentinel boys
out and beat in-district rival Bethel
the next night 7-2 as Dutcher and
Salers combined to allow four hits.
In a season that was full of
Photo Courtsey of Todd Keister
disappointments, Davis and his
staff realize that this was a stepping
stone in the process of rebuilding
the program into a winner.
High Steppers make it through tough times
the past few years. Advisor, Jeanette
Perry, has been fi ghting with the
judges about how to rate hip-hop.
Many competitions have been labeled
as “hip-hop” but the competitors have
been performing “Britney Spears
moves” or ballet. Perry feels as though
this is completely unfair and believes
that a category should be rated as such.
High Steppers recently went to
state. Although they did not place
they proved to the competitors that
they would never give up and would
always dance their hearts out. State
is a goal they plan to accomplish
for the future teams to come.
Next years squad, which was just
previously decided, has plans to
perform more at Spanaway Lake and
participate in the community. These
situations will further their knowledge
of the art of dance and the Spanaway
Lake High Steppers will pursue
their love even stronger then before.

Track sprints into state
By: Pamela Kouassi
Feature Editor
The Spanaway Lake track team
has come a long way this season
considering all the criticism
and challenges thrown their
way. The team’s success
refl ects on the fact that they
have a positive attitude
and they make it a point
not to blame each other
for personal faults. Even
though the team is smaller
this year, they have received
a lot of recognition for their
hard work and dedication.
The track team placed
second in the Sentinel
Classic beating competitive
teams such as Curtis,
Enumclaw, Bethel and
Graham Kapowsin. This
year the Boy’s 4 x 1 team has
accomplished a lot, winning
at almost every event.
Marvin Evans, Chris Pierce,
Jedadiah Bickham and Julian MCcrann
were very proud when they heard that
they qualifi ed for districts. They didn’t
have any problems communicating
through
Friday, between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 .m.
Woman and minorities are encouraged to apply.
because they have known each other
since the 10 th grade. “We’re in love and
we support each other, “ says Bickham.
The girl’s team has lived up to
expectations, since they also qualifi ed
for districts. Britteny Hayes, Andee
Robison, Tiffani Wilson, and Brittany
Young have worked hard to get where
they are. It’s a big accomplishment
considering the girl’s 4 by 1 hasn’t gone
as far as districts in 15 years. Both teams
faced tough competitions at district but
they didn’t qualify for state. However
the boy’s 4 x 4 did make it to state.
Roger Clark, Chris Pierce, Chaphen
Johnson and Aaron
Fowler placed 13th
with a time of 3:28:34.
Bickham, Johnson and
Young, the only girl at
state; also qualifi ed
for the high jump.
Another highlight of
the season was when
junior Brittany Young
jumped 5’3 breaking
the girl’s high jump
record, which has
been in Spanaway
history for 23 years.
“It’s cool that people
know about it, I
guess,” she says.
The seniors aren’t
leaving disappointed
because most of
them have been offered scholarships
or like Bickham, they’ve been
recruited. “They had as much fun as
they worked, “ says Coach Adams.
Tennis fi nishes the
season strong
By: Courtnie Martin
Although the Lady Sentinels have won few
games, they have proven that their dedication
and development has inspired a change for next
year’s girls. Different from basketball, football, and
track, the girls have to fi ght for the best out of fi ve
wins. Sure, we only see their record but, have we
actually looked into the complications of tennis?
Winning three out of fi ve matches could in fact
be diffi cult. Imagine if football or basketball was
the best out of fi ve. Back to back games can be
extremely tiresome. The peers should applaud this
years Tennis team for their hard work and effort.
The tennis team has done very well as far as
sportsmanship and dedication. “Coach Tanaguchi
is a great coach, she never gives up on us and
she helps us fi nd our weakness so that we can
fi x it”, said Sarah Abenilla, wait a 7-4 record.
This young team has found dedication that will
strive to make them a stronger and more consistent
team for next year. Beating Thomas Jefferson left
a memory that will encourage next year’s season to
start and fi nish strong. The lady Sentinels become
more and more experienced with every game; win
or lose. This makes for a strong returning team.
The Spanaway Lake soccer team
has ended their season. This team has
been overlooked, not really mentioned
in the halls of Spanaway Lake.
The soccer team went 1-13 overall. They
managed to beat Graham Kapowsin
with a score of 2-1. Overall the team
managed 5 goals, of which 4 came
from the freshman and junior players.
Andrei Martynau fi nished with 2 goals,
Chase Smith, Mitchell Pinedo, and
Christian Wegel all managed one goal.
Seniors of the soccer team included
Cody Thompson, Jesus Pinedo,
Christian Wegel, Mychal Mitchell, Jason
Epperly, Juan Perez, and Aaron McCool.
Others included Davis Tanner,
Herman Phillip, Manny House, Andrei
Martynau, Trevor McFadden, Lance
miller, Juan Perez, Mitchell Pinedo,
Chase Smith , and Ben Williams. Each
contributed skills and talents to the fi eld.
“As the season went on we got
progressively better. By the
end we rounded out into true
soccer players,” said Thompson.
Hopefully with the refl ection on
this year’s results they will form a
new strategy, they have potential, so
lets give them our support. Good luck
soccer team in next year’s season.
