ePort to the community 2010 — 2011 note to the community two years ago samuel merritt university celebrated 100 years of educating generations of healthcare providers. our vision of becoming a nationally recognized health sciences institution has since propelled us into our second century. we are working to achieve ever-higher goals in learning, teaching, and scholarly research that will advance our mission: transforming the experience of healthcare in diverse communities. as a learning community preparing students for a variety of health professions, we have spent considerable time examining what it means to be samuel merritt university. we have looked closely at what we are doing exceedingly well and have identified areas where we can improve. we have set “stretch” goals and become more disciplined about evaluating our progress. we have studied the successes and challenges of similar higher education institutions so that we could compare ourselves and learn from them. in this process, we have answered some questions and raised many more. what distinguishes samuel merritt university in the early decades of the 21st century? our passion and our practicality; the combination of head and heart. the students, faculty, and staff who choose samuel merritt university come because of our vision, our commitment to excellence, and the hands-on approach to learning that they find here. we are capturing that balance in the new look of our publications, website, and advertising. engaging the whole smu community, we noted our strengths in clinical experience and simulation-based learning. we found students, faculty, and alumni value 3
