32 pradip’s wife, rekha, remembers the joy of watching her husband take his first steps in the hospital room. “i began to cry. i’m not even sure why.” these steps were monumental for pradip and his family, with years of therapy yet to come. rekha finds new joy in the daily walks she now takes with her husband, and time spent with their grandchildren is cherished. shefali Parikh (mot alum '99) with her parents mr. and mrs. Pradip choksi education has always been important to pradip and he worked hard to earn his graduate degree in the united states, leaving his native town of bombay. “i benefited from scholarships in india and financial assistance in the united states,” pradip said. “both of which were merit and need based.” after receiving his degree, pradip secured a position as a biomedical engineer at a medical company. eventually the entrepreneur and inventor started his own successful enterprise, resenex corporation, which offers innovative fluid products for medical and industrial applications. education holds an important place in the choksi household as the family values academic excellence. “with education you can go anywhere and be successful,” rekha commented with pride. “you also develop a maturity along with your knowledge.” pradip’s appreciation for the opportunities awarded to him never wavered as he and rekha continue to be actively involved in their community. “we give contributions as a
ePort to the community 2010 — 2011 way of giving back to educational institutions and nonprofit organizations that have meaning to us,” he said. “i am where i am only because of education.” pradip and rekha were pleased to see their daughter, shefali, take her own path into a health sciences profession. she graduated in 1999 with a master’s degree in occupational therapy from samuel merritt university. after her father’s accident, shefali left her practice as an occupational therapist to help run the family business, but her mother believes shefali’s education and experience dramatically assisted in pradip’s recovery. “i felt glad that shefali was an occupational therapist because that helped in my husband’s rehab.” the family also decided the education of these muchneeded professionals held an important place in their hearts. in 2007, the choksi’s established the Pradip and Rekha Choksi Occupational Therapy Endowed Scholarship Fund. despite its name, the fund also benefits physical therapy students. scholarships are granted to students based on their academic achievement and financial need. it also requires recipients to be actively involved in the community. “study a lot, work hard, and donate,” is pradip’s advice. rekha hopes this scholarship will enable future skilled occupational therapists and physical therapists to help others through their health struggles in a thoughtful, professional and caring way. shefali agrees. “i’m proud of my parents’ generosity, even in the face of personal adversity.” 33
