board of medical specialties is mandating the inclusion
of simulation exercises for maintenance of certification,”
explains william stiers, md, hssc simulation specialist.
“samuel merritt university is able to give doctors a real
life scenario that they use every day in recognizing early
stages of sepsis development, and the mannequins provide
a safe learning environment.”
the simulation center includes operating rooms identical
to those at the hospital, a skills lab where students practice
procedures such as stitching sutures or performing
colonoscopies, and patient rooms where students can
practice communication skills and bedside manner. the
center has over a dozen medical mannequins that breathe,
bleed and mimic injuries or diseases.
