smu faculty use simulation to help Physicians
identify and treat sepsis
each year, sepsis strikes an estimated 750,000 people in
the united states. sepsis is a severe illness in which the
bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria and is the leading
cause of death for non-cardiac, critically ill patients in
the u.s. sepsis is the one diagnosis-specific initiative that
the institute for healthcare improvement recommends
hospitals remedy.
samuel merritt university and sutter health, parent
company of the university, are working together to tackle
this nationwide problem by providing additional training
in early recognition of signs and symptoms of sepsis. the
goal is aimed at reducing the rate of reported sepsisassociated
mortality.
this past year several physicians from many sutter
health hospitals across california have participated
in university simulation-based seminars held in the
health sciences simulation center (hssc) to practice
medical techniques ranging from surgery to patient
examinations. an important outcome of these sessions
kaiser permanente pediatric
doctors and nurses also used
the hssc for its pediatrics
fundamentals critical care
support training.
