note to the community
two years ago samuel merritt university celebrated 100
years of educating generations of healthcare providers.
our vision of becoming a nationally recognized health
sciences institution has since propelled us into our second
century. we are working to achieve ever-higher goals in
learning, teaching, and scholarly research that will advance
our mission: transforming the experience of healthcare in
diverse communities.
as a learning community preparing students for a variety
of health professions, we have spent considerable time
examining what it means to be samuel merritt university.
we have looked closely at what we are doing exceedingly
well and have identified areas where we can improve.
we have set “stretch” goals and become more disciplined
about evaluating our progress. we have studied the
successes and challenges of similar higher education
institutions so that we could compare ourselves and learn
from them. in this process, we have answered some
questions and raised many more.
what distinguishes samuel merritt university in the
early decades of the 21st century? our passion and our
practicality; the combination of head and heart. the
students, faculty, and staff who choose samuel merritt
university come because of our vision, our commitment
to excellence, and the hands-on approach to learning that
they find here. we are capturing that balance in the new
look of our publications, website, and advertising.
engaging the whole smu community, we noted our
strengths in clinical experience and simulation-based
learning. we found students, faculty, and alumni value
the balance of learning and doing that they find at the
university. we have expressed it as preparation + practice;
research + results; analysis + action; insight + impact;
and technology + touch. we have featured the themes
of research, practice and technology in this year’s report.
our second century calls for deepening samuel merritt
university’s commitment to diversity. over the past 24
months, students, faculty, and staff have worked to create
the culture that will make each individual feel respected,
welcomed, and supported as a valued member of the
university community. located in our nation’s most diverse
state, samuel merritt university is embracing the challenge of
serving a more diverse mix of students, increasing diversity
in the faculty and staff, and preparing our graduates to
work with patients and practitioners from many different
backgrounds. as healthcare and health professions become
global in their reach, this becomes even more essential.
we are pleased to report that the university remains
financially sound and continues to grow, despite the slow
economic recovery. our faculty has dramatically increased
their research and scholarly activities while maintaining
high-quality teaching. we have systematically improved
our campus facilities to support more interactive learning.
our students continue to excel in their studies and to
succeed in the workplace after graduation.
we have much to be grateful for, and we particularly
appreciate your support of the university’s success.
new brand identity
no doubt you have noticed the new logo that graces the
cover of this report. we hope you get a sense of the new
look as you flip through the pages. new colors and images,
and best of all, fresh words: the report to the community
introduces a completely new way to communicate all the
great things happening at samuel merritt university. please
welcome our new brand identity!
in late 2009, we asked san francisco brand specialists,
mortar advertising (known for their work with golden gate
university, stanford and sutter health vna & hospice) to
think about how we might modernize and change the way
we write and talk about smu.
we needed a new way to describe our impact on the
community and our commitment to becoming a nationally
renowned university of health sciences.
mortar started the makeover process by interviewing
members of our staff, faculty, students, regents, and
other healthcare professionals involved with our students.
recommendations for a new logo and brand design
were proposed, approved and the work of refreshing
our identity began in earnest. at last count, the process
involved over 3,000 members of our community including
ePort to the community 2010 — 2011
potential students, alumni, thought leaders and donors.
many of you were kind enough to participate in providing
your feedback on the chosen design, which is meant to
convey smu’s new brand identity:
> We are confident leaders. the health sciences
community can look to us for inspiration, innovation
and guidance.
> We are thinkers AnD doers. we are an institution built by
academic pioneers who support innovation and research.
> We are people of the people. smu places a premium
on providing hands-on, clinical excellence and inspiring
exceptional interpersonal skills.
> We have an emotionally superior staff. the many talented
people of smu are passionate, encouraging and caring.
> our students attend smu because it is the best. our
academic environment is perceived as fast-paced, rigorous
and prestigious with a diverse and thriving community.
we’re glad to report that the new creative direction
scored highly in every one of these areas.
the result is a new way to communicate about samuel
merritt university. our new brand identity reflects our
passion, dedication and drive to deliver an exceptional
education in health sciences. we are particularly grateful
to the community members and friends whose input
contributed to this project.
we’re looking forward to sharing more of the new brand in
research & results
throughout its history, samuel merritt university has
excelled at teaching. with a student to faculty ratio that
averages 10 to 1, classes are known to be small, interactive
and hands-on. during clinical rotations, students have
access to preceptors at the hospital, or other clinical
sites, at a ratio of no more than 8 to 1. depending on the
specialty, a ratio of 1 to 1 may be required to provide safe
patient care. these
factors have enabled
the curricula across
all disciplines to
be consistently
rigorous, fastpaced
university culture has
changed dramatically
in the last several
years, accelerating since the college became a university
in 2009. although research has been traditionally infused
throughout the teaching and learning experience, smu
is beginning to develop within its faculty more focused
efforts to produce a broad range of scholarship that
can directly contribute to the knowledge base of the
professional degrees that the university offers. where
faculty have long been recognized as expert practitioners
in their fields, the scholarly qualifications and interests
of our professoriate have increased in impressive ways.
11
12
faculty are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals
and books, many more are invited to serve on national
boards or professional committees, and a growing number
have been awarded grants and other professional honors.
research accomplishments by smu faculty are numerous.
the university has begun to emphasize the important
role of faculty scholarship by including research as one
of the 20 dashboard indicators of overall institutional
performance. scholarly production is clearly increasing.
over the last four years, measures of scholarly productivity
have increased over 200 percent. there was minimal grant
activity among faculty eight years ago. since that time, the
university has received an excess of nine million dollars
in externally funded research and program development
grants. the smu research agenda reflects a diversity of
topics important to
national health issues,
notably in the areas
of multiple sclerosis
(ms), brain trauma
and rehabilitation,
hiv, genetics,
and multicultural
proud of the research by physical therapy professor, gail
people sustain a tbi annually, causing
52,000 deaths, 275,000 hospital
patients at the beginning of their second year. “Our clinical
experiences are 100 percent hands-on and include secondyear
rotations at the busy Alameda County Medical Center,
which operates Highland Hospital, the San Francisco
homeless shelters, and the SMU simulation center,” explains
Eric Stamps, DPM, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and
Assistant Professor. “Highland Hospital is a county teaching
hospital with a solid
educational culture.
It has a high volume
of patients, often
with undertreated
disease. Our
students excel
in this busy
environment.”
Third year podiatric
clinical experiences
Dr. Eric Stamps, California School extend throughout
of Podiatric Medicine
the year and include
general surgery, internal
medicine, biomechanics and three months of podiatric
medicine and surgery. The third year also includes a month
in a private practitioner’s office.
“The idea is to teach the students something about private
practice, to allow students to form relationships with
potential future business partners and to spread the word
about our educational program,” said Dr. Stamps. “Many of
our private office practitioners have been involved with this
program for decades.”
Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy students
also have unique clinical environments. Portions of their
clinical work take place in University sponsored clinics.
These clinics focus on rehabilitation issues and serve
individuals who have a physical or mental impairment that
substantially limits their skills of daily living, and serve
those who have exhausted their health insurance.
Michael De Rosa, PhD, MPH, PA-C, Chair of the Master
Physician Assistant program, credits early clinical
placement as one of the top reasons why his program
has a 98 percent
first time pass rate
on the Physician
Assistant National
Certification
Examination for
(Average national
The excellence of any
type of practitioner
is largely dependent on the quality and range of clinical
care offered to students during their educational program.
“These responsibilities are managed by dedicated faculty
whose sole role is scheduling and managing clinical sites
and their attendant contracts,” adds Dr. Foster. “It is well
accepted that in the academic community, these clinical
myriad of sites, contracts, student issues, scheduling, and
of course, counseling and evaluating students through this
each year, sepsis strikes an estimated 750,000 people in
samuel merritt university and sutter health, parent
this nationwide problem by providing additional training
in early recognition of signs and symptoms of sepsis. the
goal is aimed at reducing the rate of reported sepsisassociated
this past year several physicians from many sutter
in university simulation-based seminars held in the
one family’s health crisis results in Aiding
future healthcare Practitioners
pradip choksi is a respected biomedical engineer,
marathon runner and mountain climber who scaled
mt. whitney in one day—on two separate occasions.
but on may 15, 2004 his world was shattered when an
unfortunate accident devastated pradip’s speech, motor
skills and emotional well-being.
during a leisurely bike ride, pradip suffered a debilitating
head injury and, despite
wearing a helmet, was
in a coma for three
weeks. the man
who once climbed
mountains now
couldn’t crawl
from his hospital
bed, get dressed
or form simple
sentences. although
his condition was
extremely serious,
with the help of several
skilled doctors and
therapists, pradip
learned to walk
again and function at a level many thought not possible.
testament to pradip’s character, his spirit and drive to
achieve remained intact.
Mr. and Mrs. Choksi established the
Pradip and Rekha Choksi Occupational
Therapy Endowed Scholarship Fund as
a way to financially assist OT and PT
students at Samuel Merritt University.
pradip’s wife, rekha, remembers the joy of watching
her husband take his first steps in the hospital room.
“i began to cry. i’m not even sure why.” these steps were
monumental for pradip and his family, with years of
therapy yet to come. rekha finds new joy in the daily
walks she now takes with her husband, and time spent with
their grandchildren is cherished.
shefali Parikh (mot
Pradip choksi
education has always been
important to pradip and
he worked hard to earn his
graduate degree in the united
states, leaving his native town
of bombay. “i benefited from
scholarships in india and financial
assistance in the united states,” pradip
said. “both of which were merit and
need based.”
after receiving his degree, pradip secured a position as
a biomedical engineer at a medical company. eventually
the entrepreneur and inventor started his own successful
enterprise, resenex corporation, which offers innovative
fluid products for medical and industrial applications.
education holds an important place in the choksi
household as the family values academic excellence.
“with education you can go anywhere and be successful,”
rekha commented with pride. “you also develop a
maturity along with your knowledge.”
pradip’s appreciation for the opportunities awarded to him
never wavered as he and rekha continue to be actively
involved in their community. “we give contributions as a

way of giving back to educational institutions and nonprofit
organizations that have meaning to us,” he said. “i
am where i am only because of education.”
pradip and rekha were pleased to see their daughter,
shefali, take her own path into a health sciences
profession. she graduated in 1999 with a master’s degree
in occupational therapy from samuel merritt university.
after her father’s accident, shefali left her practice as an
occupational therapist to help run the family business, but
her mother believes shefali’s education and experience
dramatically assisted in pradip’s recovery. “i felt glad that
shefali was an occupational therapist because that helped
in my husband’s rehab.”
the family also decided the education of these muchneeded
professionals held an important place in their
hearts. in 2007, the choksi’s established the Pradip and
Rekha Choksi Occupational Therapy Endowed Scholarship
Fund. despite its name, the fund also benefits physical
therapy students. scholarships are granted to students
based on their academic achievement and financial
need. it also requires recipients to be actively involved in
the community. “study a lot, work hard, and donate,” is
pradip’s advice.
rekha hopes this scholarship will enable future skilled
occupational therapists and physical therapists to help
others through their health struggles in a thoughtful,
professional and caring way.
shefali agrees. “i’m proud of my parents’ generosity, even
in the face of personal adversity.”
